Hacker News is already in the business of policing articles though. This is a curated list of articles that people share, and a lot of unrelated articles are automatically deleted or just downvoted out of existence. This isnt Reddit.

It’s okay to have an opinionated website. Not every corner of the internet needs to be a bastion of free speech

They separate each other by spending money on YouTube ads and sponsorships and jacking up prices to offer 50%, no 70% no NINETY PERCENT DISCOUNT if you subscribe for 17 years using my promo code MisterSandman!

React is significantly more easier to hire for than JQuery is, especially in this market. Especially if you’re looking for more junior roles.

As a new grad, I would’ve picked a react job over a JQuery job even if the JQuery one paid me 10k more.

Can we stop calling things you find weird “American?” Like Jesus Christ, Europe isn’t some special land where everyone makes food from scratch and capitalism doesn’t exist.

I’m not even American, but are we seriously judging people for baking cakes using cake mixes? It’s been around for almost a century. I highly doubt that cake mixes aren’t just as common in Europe than they are in the US within a margin of error.

This is not just an unfounded theory but a completely insane theory. Many (all?) of the countries ahead of the US in test scores also don’t “beat their kids” because that is absolutely fucking insane.

It’s such an American thing, to blame something on a lack of violence.

I think what ICE is doing is bad, but I do feel a bit annoyed with how the media is reporting this. They WERE misusing the B1 Visa a bit - at least that’s what the facts point to, and that’s the only reason they are sending workers back to Korea.

I understand why they did this (H1B is painful and a B1 visa may have been the only way to get people to train American factory workers), but it’s not like they were completely innocent. South Koreans were still treated with a lot more respect and dignity than almost any other ethnicity has been.

I understand you made the app because of your own needs as a someone in a co parenting situation, but you’d have a lot more luck by removing that from your pitch. I see on your website you’ve mentioned friends or roommates which is a much bigger market.

The service itself sounds very useful, Splitwise is good but requires all parties to use and respect the app

It still is, not all queries trigger web search, and it takes more tokens and time to do research. ChatGPT will confidently give me outdated information, and unless I know it’s wrong and ask it to research, it wouldn’t know it is wrong. Having a more recent knowledge base can be very useful (for example, knowing who the president is without looking it up, making references to newer node versions instead of old ones)

I never said any of those things, you’re literally arguing with made up points I didn’t make?

But my point Hetzner isn’t self-hosted. Similar to how storing money in a bank isn’t self-banking. Self-hosting means you host your content yourself in a server room that you have physical access to. Hetzner isn’t that.

And that’s fine, self-hosting is pretty silly for most use cases nowadays. And all of the positives you mentioned are true. But I hate how we’ve turned “self-hosting” into a political dog-whistle for hosting with companies that seem more trustworthy than the big guys. And there’s nothing wrong with not wanting to trust GCP or Azure - just don’t call it self hosting.

And I hate to say it, but in this context, Musk would’ve been at least a little useful in having around. I’m aware he’s not the best person to make reliable predictions, but he does run SpaceX.

With both the cuts to NASA and Musk leaving the core inner circle of Trump, space exploration is going to be set back. Mars ain’t happening in our lifetimes, IMO.

I hope I’m wrong.

Why do you claim that Hetzner won’t screw you over with your data?

What you’re doing with Hetzner is just a few less layers of abstraction compared to AWS or Azure. They can still theoretically take down the machine or steal your data, if they wanted to.

I don’t know what the correct definition of self hosted is, but there is a big ideological difference between what you’re doing and self-hosting actual, physical hardware in your home.

Quebec housing is not affordable by any means, but still much more affordable than the rest of Canada. Especially when you look at cities like Montreal and compare it to other cities like Toronto.

It’s not just affordability, it’s one big piece but it’s not the only thing.

As much as I’d like to agree with this, India was literally in the trenches of its own civil war and independence movement AND impacted by the world wars AND figuring itself out as a new country in the early 50s.

Yet Indian middle class was still very distinctly one-income driven.
