It's perfectly possible our heuristics are muddied beyond necessity in order to generate variety in action, so as to reduce risk to the unknown for the species - even though it would cause a minority of individuals to consistently make sub-optimal choices. From a speculative standpoint, it's easy to find examples of people doing things that we consider 'stupid' but it pays off because of some unlikely event occurring in coincidence.

Reality has a lot of unknowns. There is no perfect model that could account for that. It's possible being hyper-intelligent (beyond our current ability) is (or was) a disadvantage for the species

This is a perfectly concise articulation of my thoughts as well. I will add that it is still good to keep in mind that owners of the models are indeed self-serving, but it does not need to be a cynical thing. Most of the time, the self serving motivation is to simply provide the best service possible

But as an example I also get a lot of fluff ideas for video game mechanics. For multiplayer games, the ability to tag another player for tracking. So you can pull up a menu and see players you've tagged and their recent performance and such or create your own 'achievements' and see what players have accomplished them (with necessary privacy options included of course). The primary use-cases being clan recruitment and pro-player analysis.

Random product idea example: A renting service for size-adjustable tables. So you can test out what table size fits best in your space. counter-height vs standard, square vs skinny, size A in room 1 or size B in room 2, etc. probably too small a market on this idea though since itd only be worth it before expensive table purchases

Yeah, this is why I have been working as a data analyst. I've taken on as many vendor management responsibilities as I can and help out with COGS and revenue attribution analysis for finance. I have been collecting ideas while making steady wage, and eventually I'll pull the trigger on something

I have a backlog of like 200+ viable new product / feature ideas that help solve some business problem or improve the efficiency of activities people do with financial transactions involved. Many are too small to be stand alone for sure, but I do not believe million dollar ideas are grown in a silo

Maybe your sentiment can be enhanced by not gatekeeping participation - but by promoing a handover of leadership to more symbolic choices once the work of buuilding momentum is done. This is a rule that could be applied to any demographic-based leadership that needs to organize its aesthetic as it grows

Bookmark Folder : Description

Files : Browser based files I want easy access to. These are generally static pages or anything I do data entry into (google drive docs, flowcharts). Things I could feasibly download a copy of.

Reports : Dynamic pages that let me get a measurement on something

HowTo : I often google how to do something, and when i find a result that i actually use it goes in here

Tools : Web tools, like JSON pretty print. These are pages that provide an automatic service of some kind (i.e input / output processes)

Index : Informational Directories. Examples include Code of federal regulations, RFC pages, interesting / useful wiki articles, cheat sheets, comprehensive guides that go beyond "howto", repositories, etc

Reading : Blog posts, case studies, technical writings, articles, things meant to be part of a conversation or a showcase

Communities : Social home pages that are mostly already bookedmarked into my finger tips like HN, reddit, stack overflow, facebook, etc

Learning : Items that still need to be 'digested'. Stuff from here is often moved to other folders after I am done with it.

Misc : (a word i only like to use once, if at all, in organizing). Basically, if all i do is take a glance at something and want to come back to it later - it goes in here

Each of these main folders denote mutually exclusive types of content (imo). Within each of these folders I create subfolders as needed to group things together by topic.

Additionally, I use a tab manager add-on. Currently I use "Cluster" for google chrome but I am looking into switching to TabXpert. When multiple sets of pages form a cohesive context, I save that context as a collection of tabs. For example, if I am working on an analytics project I may have various HowTo's, documentation, files, and Learning tabs open that are all related to my project. I save that window, and then instead of digging through ALL my book marks I can keep a running session of relevant pages. Some of which I know are only relevant for the project and do not need to be bookmarked.

When I start a new project, I collect relevant pages from my existing bookmarks into a new context.

i meant they can maintain an app store experience without the bottlneck of downloading expected apps on day 1. instead of downloading and using data an wasting time, it would enable the app. so its the same "opt-in" experience as downloading but with benefits

very interesting. I want to note that for models and simulations "unpredictable" = random. There are many different ways to model random variables so as to get that kind of stability you are referencing (or other kinds of stability) to show in the model. I agree it isnt a perfect match for reality (no model is) but a production stream with variance is a common model

Operations Research is related to this. I majored in Information & Systems Engineering which is analogous. The focus is on business, manufacturing, and operational systems and a section of the study is modelling a system and using RNG to simulate chaos / disorder

You are not emphasizing the descendants part enough. It still requires existing members of the species to propagate the gene with natural breeding, same as 'natural' genetic mutations. So if it is a gene detrimental to survival, it can still very easily die off. Which is not in violation of what natural selection would predict.

It is kind of silly to think we are "altering" species. We would be creating new species or breeds using existing ones as a template. Unless there is some agenda I am unaware of to go out and kill all existing members of a species after we create our own version of it?

If nothing else, isolate the artificial species into controlled habitats. I know a primary use-case often discussed is regarding mosquitoes where that wouldnt be the case.. but imagine editing the genetics of zoo animals so that they are much more easily acclimated to zoo life. Less negative effects of poor temperature control, a broader dietary selection, reduced reaction times for dangerous animals. And there is no risk of environmental impact since they are in isolated enirovments

Occam's razor involves rationalizing based on the fewest assumptions. The thing is, I do not feel at liberty to make any assumptions at all about the stranger in my house. There is no sense in tolerating intrusion and I will act with haste and lethal force if there is no other relevant context. If the intruder makes an effort to explain themselves, though, I'll listen for any reason to understand what's going on and de-escalate

You do not know in advance what problems you need to solve on the test. You know the topics, sure, but you show up to the exam to perform work.

In a well designed meeting with a client, you show up to present work already done - or discuss what work needs to be done. Internal meetings might be more ad-hoc and you can get brownie points for working off the top of your head but its not necessary

Yes I think we would need a design goal to provide the AI with "some understanding" of how we think. It should be able to do its work in any model that works for it, which would then be translated back to our language.

Thankfully, language is flexible so it can express many models we do not understand in ways that can help us understand them. It would be interesting to see some sort of study on where the boundaries are on what human language is capable of modelling or not

I think you are conflating the use-cases of an exam with how you are tested in reality.

imo an exam is much more akin to meeting preparation than the meeting itself. I completely agree that you should know what you are talking about in a meeting, but the reason you know what you are talking about is because you spent time beforehand working out the specifics for the expected problems. Everyone knows meetings require preparation time to make sure the things being talked about are verified and accurate.

I actually wouldnt really want to talk to someone who's going to try to do everything off the top of their head unless I'm convinced they're a genius. If something wasnt already prepared, you dont half ass it in the meeting. it becomes an action item to be taken care of after the meeting. It's a waste of everyone's time to have anyone working out a problem live.

Isn't it more likely that we would look at a foreign model and think, "this makes sense, but i wouldnt have ever thought to do it this way".

Our senses might be fooled, but I think there would almost always exist a set of words to explain what the AI is doing assuming the AI is capable enough to find them

I think there is inherent value to openly judging people, and there is nothing inherently wrong with having and expressing "negative" emotion. IMO where we are actually failing as a society is in our acceptance of /being judged/. And I do not mean acceptance in the way where you must feel positive about it - my point is exactly the opposite; openly judge them right back. If two people judge each other harshly and also are accepting of each other then they may still carry on with seizing opportunities to help each other rather than creating distance and trying to forget each other exists. Over time, the confrontation is a catalyst for evolving our behavior with each other but only if we are all accepting of being judged

If I am truly honest, I think it is ironic to preach for people to not do something (like judge) as a means of supporting an acceptance of people's behaviors. I feel like there is an underlying assumption to your stance that judgement and harsh language is inherently bad. You can both accept someone the way they are and judge them for it.. and I personally believe it is /required/ to accept them the way they are in order to provide a more "objective" judgement.

edit: to answer your question, yes i believe idle judgements are the grassroots to future formalized societal rules. formalism is a well studied idea in philosophy and is ultimately a self sustaining illusion built upon informal phenomenon. In other words, you cannot create a formal system to govern subjective behavior without informal subjective behavior laying the groundwork first.
