If you're part of a particular subculture, like sailboat cruising, nearly all of international sailboat cruising takes place on Facebook. There are pages for every town, anchorage, marina, etc that you will encounter. Often that is paired with a WhatsApp group where people have conversations and coordinate activities. When you sail from city X to city Y, you join that Facebook group and you learn where to do laundry, where to get groceries, etc. You stay on these groups and the whole community interacts there for many years. There are other places this happens but Facebook is the main source of this type of information sharing.

Yes, it's badly broken. Try building an app, it's so inconsistent, I have no idea what the heck is going on. It seems like every place my app uses a keyboard it has a different look, different feel, different way to dismiss it, etc. What the AF.

I love astro, it's been such a pleasure to use and totally solved my need for a flexible platform. I managed to retire a bunch of Wordpress sites and I've never looked back. Hopefully I can still run it on netlify.

I see what the author is saying here, but they're painting with an overly broad brush. The whole "San Francisco still thinks it can change the world" also is annoying.

I am from the Seattle area, so I do take it a bit personally, but this isn't exactly my experience here.

You are exactly correct. I'm seeing this already as a relative of mine is exactly that, a small local accountant. He's struggling to inform the many small businesses that he supports. Most can barely use a computer, believe it or not. Some don't have smart phones. He's referring them to a service that is charging a couple of hundred bucks to do the filing.

I also run a small business, I had never heard of this. No one reached out to me, I was not notified in any way. For something that can threaten my freedom, it's a real shocker, the only way I heard about this is because this guy told me. Oh yeah, I also got some random text messages that seemed like spam, probably from one of these parasites trying to charge $300 to fill out a form.

If you go, and aren't interested in a big party boat, there are a few organizations that offer canoe rides to their farm, including educational tours and lunch. Plus you get to paddle the canoes. We found one on air b and b experiences but I'm sure they advertise in other places as well.

Getting to the canals is a bit difficult if you don't use uber/did or a taxi. We did take an uber down, because the adventure started early, to beat the mid-day heat, but we did manage to take a bus/train on the way back, and only got lost twice.

I used this for taxes this year. It spotted three errors, fairly complex errors actually, and spit it back for me to fix. After the third submission, it was error free and my return was accepted. I found it pretty amazing that it caught all of that and so, so, so, happy I gave no money to the tax industrial complex for a change. The IRS should definitely continue this as a thing.

I too am similarly gifted. Back in the usenet days a group I was on received its first spam. There was some discussion about whether this type of thing would get out of control. I confidently proclaimed that there was no way spam would ever be more than a minor nuisance.

That's so amazing. That Sun sparc 10 was a beast of a machine. I had one running until 2020. It was seemingly unstoppable. It broke my heart to send it off to recycling, it's weird being emotional about a computer. It had been serving web pages (on-and-off) since 1997.

This was a funny era. A few years later (early 2000s), I somehow got sent to the Microsoft developer conference because I was the closest, geographically. There were so many sessions focused on open source and inter working with Linux. It was shocking that Microsoft had so quickly embraced this world.

Then in the closing keynote, Gates spoke passionately about how Microsoft would eradicate Linux and crush open source. It was hilarious how out of touch the left hand was from the right hand.

I also made a bit of a splash because I came to the conference with a MacBook. A journalist even wanted to interview me because it was so unusual. I declined.

The best part of the conference was the passes to company store, buying a lot of shwag for dirt cheap and a bunch of OS licenses, which they practically gave away in the store (to run in Parallels of course) lol.

You may be joking but this is why we thought Cisco bought Webex back in the day too.

iFixit is so fantastic. For any of their flaws or shortcomings, they are really trying to grow and improve on a regular basis. They have helped my family save so much stuff from the scrap heap.

These are the types of actions that help the ethos of "REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE".

But it comes at the cost of capitalism and pure profit making. There's going to have to be a hard reckoning sometime soon that we can't keep just throwing stuff away (and paying again and again), just so the stock market keeps moving up.

Now with the cloud none of this is necessary. With data at rest laws, all our email older than six months is open game.

There are benefits to standing but it isn’t without risks. I messed up my body a bit through a lot of years of standing. So I traded standing body issues for sitting body issues, to some extent.

Like others have said, make sure to mix it up by sitting and standing. Also like sitting, standing requires proper body dynamics (standing straight, keeping your weight evenly distributed, desk at proper height). If the desk you get has a way to preset both heights, you will be more likely to get it right each time you change.

Lastly, a gel or cushion floor mat for standing can be really helpful.

Reminder to run some continuous streams through your ssh tunnels so your keystroke patterns aren’t detected as easily.
