I will never understand how a small group of tech savvy people are heavily confused and against a simple and more secure system.

You want anecdotes? Ok. I’ve had elderly adult relatives who aren’t good with their devices tell me unprompted they’re using them and like them when I mentioned the word out loud to myself using my phone around them.

These are people who don’t know the difference between apps and the web. Who have 200 tabs open because they don’t know what tabs are so a new one just gets opened automatically all the time. Can’t tell some websites apart. Who change their passwords on every login to some sites because they can’t get sign in right.

Yeah if you want to write them down or refuse to save passwords outside text files or demand they live on a security key on your keychain you’ll have a hard time. You’re being 0.0000001% of the user population. You’re not representative.

They are a MASSIVE UX win. A MASSIVE security win.

I’ve logged into my work computer with a passkey on my personal phone, no issue. It’s fine. They’re backed up locally. It’s fine.

The biggest problem, which is getting better and somewhat a transition problem, is sites using terrible UX to trigger the workflow. Those that follow the suggestions or close to it are great.

I love passkeys. I just don’t get the confusion.

Things that feel useful instead of are useful.

Did planes take off in Flight Control? I don’t remember.

That was one of my most played games of all time. SO PERFECT for the iPhone and on the go play.

Oh sure, Apple has TONS of mistakes if we look overall.

I was only talking about CPU transitions.

Plus you can point it at actual software or tests with known results and tell it to keep going until it gets it.

The walled garden is an advantage of some sort, but they’ve also never made a bad call on switching architectures.

We don’t know what it would look like if Apple had chosen something that ended up like Itanium. It’s quite possible they don’t have the clout to pull it off.

(Maybe they should have gone Intel instead of PPC, but both were significantly better than m68k at that point)

PPC was significantly faster than m68k. Intel was significantly faster again. Finally ARM was yet again.

(ARM and Intel especially on laptops)

They could pay the emulation price and still come out equal or usually on top. Even when equal there were often other benefits, like reduced heat.

As I remember hearing Itanium was a dog with x86 code. It never got fast enough to compete let alone supplant it during emulation right?

So it wasn’t (meaningfully?) faster on recompiled code or new code. It wasn’t faster on new code. But it cost way more.

Not a winning combination.

You put one sentence in saying it was good, then the rest of the (admittedly short) ent complaining about behavior from 30 years ago.

Why does it matter to today? It just makes your first sentence feel like a backhanded compliment.

In my mind it had mostly come and gone by then. I don’t think it was ever very popular.

But I remember it fondly.

Why is it every time some company people hate does anything good, no matter how trivial, people have to trash it?

Someone at MS made a fun IRC client. Thats it. It’s a WILDLY different world than 30 years ago and MS is a different company.

They released old code for those interested. Celebrate it.

No shade on the author intended, as someone with no artistic talent this is a great idea for a way you could make them.

I think it was my introduction to IRC. If not it would have been shortly after.

Also the author is testing a game engine.

It’s possible that Gnome/KDE/whatever has wildly different latencies on X11 vs Wayland.

I’d be interested in seeing that test.

But it’s great to know the difference is so small here, which is what I’d expect.

Impressive. Apple said they improved the models in 27 didn’t they? It would be interesting to see the numbers the beta turns in.

There’s a reason they were used as a poster child of a bad actor when the FTC rule was made a few years ago, before the current administration shredded it.

If you’re trying to compare three runtimes, what’s the point of using completely different frameworks on each of them?

Heh. Yeah. My memory (also unreliable) is that people weren’t churning out blog spam articles for the Adsense when I found DI, or at least maybe only on obviously popular topics like cars or whatever.

It hasn’t ruined the fun stuff yet.

You can do the same thing without them, others have, though I can’t remember any off the top of my head.

I think the model is a good one but I’m fully on board without wanting to risk being beholden to them or maybe patreon or others.

DI basically predates blog spam doesn’t it?

As a small example of this stupidity, I’ve enjoyed Apple Arcade. Every time I play a game I get a big Apple Arcade splash screen. Ok.

Well now (possibly 27 beta “feature”) I now also get a little dynamic island pop-up at the same time, showing me icons for a couple other games I might like.

On the service I’m already paying for.

When I’m trying to play a game.

You know when I’m not looking for another game to play? When I start one, I already have.

I went to Apple 20+ years ago, partly because they weren’t doing this crud. Now I have no choice.

That explains why it’s so rare for a new episode to appear.

I’ve been reading (then listening) to DI forever. Not the full 20 years, because I remember reading through the entire back catalog when I first found it, but a very long time.

I didn’t care. Because to me the performance was a cost I was more than willing to pay for giving me sanity in JS land. Knowing you were passing the right types, right number of arguments, etc. Just the quality of documentation you got from having types at all above the nothing we had before was huge.

I love they’ve made it a ton faster. But I never thought about giving it up due to compiler performance.

I own a Ford now, had a Honda and I’m in a relative’s Honda somewhat frequently.

Rented a number of GMs for sure, maybe a Nissan? Some of that is more fuzzy.

They’ll attribute that to something else and claim dropping CarPlay was a huge success and do it in gas models.

Wouldn’t that mean CarPlay Ultra is flat out impossible?

But it exists. And is available in at least one production car.

I promise, he knows exactly what it is.

That’s very odd. I’ve used my phones with 3 different cars regularly using CarPlay every single time I drive for literally a decade without ever experiencing that.

Plus various rental cars!

And Apple doesn’t just take it over. It requires a per-model design package the OEM makes with Apple’s help. So they can keep all their logos and design elements they care about.

They still don’t do it, as you pointed out. But it’s not like using an AppleTV to avoid the terrible built in smart TV interface. The OEM is still there.
