My only technical nit would be the statement “if there was an MX record”.

Many systems will fall back to an A record to attempt delivery in absence of a MX record.

Ex: did NYC have a tougher time than Florida as a result of this, and even with all the protocols in NYC, they could do only as well as Florida with no rules.

Worked just fine. Developers circumvented it. Should’ve been the red flag.

For some deals, pick something with low latency to you... and start there.

I’ve rented hundreds of servers over the years and only done colo a handful of times. A fine experience to have, but learning you need a KVM/IPMI through a dedicated server to start, and experiencing the ropes of hardware failures is going to be easier with a dedicated.

Rent a VPS.

Then rent a dedicated server when you outgrow it.

Whatever you design will be platform agnostic. You’ll be able to decide for yourself when you get big enough what’s the right path for hosting. You won’t be locked in to any particular platform.

Install something like dokku. Use Docker containers.

My startup scaled to $2M ARR on a single dedicated server for our core infrastructure. (Yes, that’s a bit extreme)

Now we have over 30 dedicated servers servicing our core infra, many of which live in a colo rack in Dallas.

Everyone is all about ‘the cloud’ - however IMHO it’s overly complicated and a distraction to start, and overly expensive as you scale. (AWS would be 16x more expensive for us than our colo setup)

Vultr, DigitalOcean, Linode... are all fine for getting started. Many even have programs where startups can get free credits: https://www.digitalocean.com/hatch/

When you grow checkout some Dedicated Hosting providers like Hivelocity, or checkout webhostingtalk’a dedicated offers forum.

Put cloudflare infront of your service for some protection and lots of options/flexibility. Backup offsite. S3 is fine to start. Can get expensive. Look to back blaze B2, or c14 from scaleway.

Agreed. I did this in 2012 - Fort Lauderdale to Ocean City, MD. Landed in Myrtle Beach, SC for 7 years.

Pat went to my high school and computer science program. It’s in a small rural, Pennsylvania farming town - pop 2000. Somehow we got an amazing math teacher turned CompSci and he turned out world class students - we always ranked high enough each year to compete internationally in ACSL.

A few years back when the teacher retired, we all gathered together to thank him, including Pat! World-class guy, and makes us proud! So great to share a story with students, who come from nothing, how you can leave our hometown and eventually be the CEO of Intel.

Biggest thing for me is netlify’s distributed nature. I don’t see anything about m3o being in multiple data centers the way fly.io is. For me, that better aligns with an appropriate backend for Netlify. (Or cloudflare workers)

This. The author presents a different solution which is equally not scalable without automation and suggests you automate his new layer instead of just using ansible to automate handling of ssh keys.
