Adobe AIR works great, has support for some phone features build in, all others can be added using native extensions.

Skinning can be done very well, and the app could also run in the browser via flash.

The bad part is, AIR is relativly slow on older mobile devices.

I call that thing bullshit. "Our analysis indicates that TCP is unwieldy and inappropriate for MMORPGs" yet World of Warcraft, Lineage I/II, Guild Wars, Ragnarok Online, Anarchy Online, Mabinogi all use TCP. Extremly successful. I using UDP would have help making World of Warcraft better they would have done it years ago. But they all probably have no idea right?

Java 7 New Features 14 years ago

these are just the tip of the iceberg of what you missing when coming from C# going to Java. Lambad, LINQ and var please!

I had the worst experience with appfog/phpfog. They ignore emails and state things on their hp that are clearly not true (like they would support .NET which they are not).

Should have been warned whem some time ago a 15year old hacked their system and controlled all their servers.

You dont need any proprietary software to code and make flash. Just use the flex compiler and code in any text editor. The flex compiler can do flash apps without flex also and has some pretty nice sintactical sugar things like two way databinding if you want it.

You can 100% emulate Websockets in Flash if you wanted, essentially librarys like socket.io use a flash fallback that does that. If you do a flash only game/app you probably just avoid the websocket overhead for faster development and better bandwith.

Raw sockets pass through firewalls and proxies exactly as good as websockets.

So lets compare the most important features that HTML5 might bring to what flash offers:

1. Faster Javascript Engines

AS3 in Flash Player 9 (2006) has about the same speed Javascript has now. There are about as many benchmarks showing AS3 beeing faster, then there are the ones showing Javascript beeing faster. Speed seems to be about the same

2. WebSockets

Has been in Flash since 2006

3. Binary Data Types (Typed Arrays and Blobs)

Has been in Flash since 2006

4. Web Audio API

Has been in Flash way longer

5. Canvas 2D Context

Has been in Flash since like forever ago

6. CSS3 and WOFF

Nothing really specific but Flash has most all of that since years

7. Local Storage, Offline Applications and the File APIs

Since 2006/2008

8. Web Workers

Will come with Flash 11.4 soon.

9. SVG 1.1/2.0

Vectors are at the core of Flash

10. WebGL

Stage3D is in Flash since 2011

So just stop hatin Flash and love the browser independent possibilities.

While watching streams of Olympia in both HTML5 (on Chrome) and Flash i found HTML5 to take nearly twice as much CPU then Flash.

Might be due to the implementation of the sites (german broadcasters ard & zdf) but flash works pretty awesome for me.
