The existence of these institutions hinges solely on the reputation we assign to them. If we collectively recognize them for their role in perpetuating economic inequality, catering primarily to privileged white adults whose parents bought them a ticket to attend, their worth will diminish rapidly over time.

VR sickness is still the largest barrier to large scale adoption. I've been following research by Meta/Reality labs closely but despite them investing billions in VR they seem to have not bothered investigating VR sickness at all.

These trucks can all be charged with 240V whereas the Tesla semi requires a 1000V (mega charger) which isn't available anywhere yet. So these trucks are all contending with being far more practical.

Before airBNB I used to rent cabins quite often on the California coast where you would probably spend $350-$500 for a weekend. That amount right now is just the cleaning fee. Maybe better for owners and airBNB to have fewer guests who pay more but it sucks for consumers.

I was a tenure track faculty, got tenure, then I also go the industry itch. Fortunately was given the opportunity to to spend my sabbatical at Google Research, which was insightful, but I was very glad to return to academia knowing that I couldn't last a day longer in industry. Being stuck in a cubicle with 3 other engineers having to attend meeting after meeting working on things that did not interest me the least. 1.5 hours lunches while being stuck on that campus from like 7 to 7 and I was bored out of my skull. Academia offers unlimited freedom, a freedom that you will only value when being stuck working from 9-5 job on someone else's ideas instead of your own. For me, pursuing my own research at my own pace is the ultimate motivation and I simply can't be bothered working on projects whose only goal is to make money. Working with students and seeing them grown is also very rewarding. I will never leave academia.

Best paper awards correlated to highest subjective rankings of CS departments? No surprise here. like I said earlier these best paper awards are really an Ivy League circle jerk which is also evident based on that the top schools only hire each others grads students or worse their own! CS academia has been devoid of any new ideas for decades, also because the brightest minds work in industry where the Googles/Microsofts/Apples couldn't care less if you graduated with an Ivy League degree.

In The Netherlands which is the biking Mecca of the world, last year more than 400,000 e-bikes were sold. It helps that the cities hundreds of years ago were designed for horses and not for cars. Notably a lot of elderly use e-bikes which not only keeps them fit but notably increases the range that they travel.

Google scholar should filter out self citations. Google scholar hasn’t been updated in like 10 years I sometimes worry alphabet will pull it’s plug.

As usual FB and other companies only collaborates with the "elite/Ivy League" schools. IMHO there are plenty of great researchers at non-elite schools and it would have been great if FB would start collaborating with those to reduce this vast concentration of academic research that has been happening for the past decade.

With low federal funding rates and every CS Department having doubled in size it is barely possible to do research IN academia. You spend nearly most of your time writing grants that don’t get funded. The little federal funding that is available ends up mostly at elite/ivy schools who dominate NSF panels and conference program committees :-( kudos if you can do independent research outside of it though

Your viewpoint is biased. Maybe women don't buy hardcore gaming setups but in 2014 they constituted 52% of the gaming demographic.

Video games have shown a gender parity for the past 10 years. 76% of facebook users are female. Blatantly ignoring and excluding this demographic is going to be the nail in the coffin of VR. ....but who knows maybe VR's 3rd wave in 2028 will get it right?
