Just like the gun debate in the US, the speed limit debate in Germany has at its core nothing to do with rational arguments. It is about perceived restriction, limiting personal freedom, and potentially taking away a right people are used to.

Yes, as others mentioned, there will be hosting providers doing this for companies. The big upside is that you truly own the content and define your rules. I assume the costs for running a larger Mastodon instance are trivial compared to how much it costs to run ads on Twitter.

I politely disagree: you just pick an "entry node", similar to picking an ISP or an email provider. You can interact with everyone in the Fediverse just fine. Having a newsfeed for your chosen "entry node" is an additional nice-to-have imho but not the defining criteria.
