I got hit with this too. TeamViewer showed incoming connections from Taipei & Guangzou. What I'm interested in figuring out is how sophisticated the attackers were. I immediately took the breached machine offline & plan on scanning it for negligees etc. I called TeamViewer & their response neither acknowledged or denied the hack. They simply asked me to report to local authorities & promised that they'd be cooperative with lots/etc.

Maybe getting a little more traction. Just spoke with a few VCs who seem super excited about what we're building. Funny thing is that I met these SV VCs & PE folks in LA & subsequently over here. They promised to line up intros to Google Ventures and other in the Bay Area.

That, combined with targeting angels via AngelList seems like a good combo. But it's still weird that there isn't a more obvious path. (Of course there's the YC lottery)

I was quite dumbfounded when the whole "craigslist killer" suddenly painted craigslist as a shady place for "weird" people online. I suspect the reality was animosity against craigslist for being disruptive to print media.

There aren't much details available, but it seems that the driver appeared to be a pretty "normal" family man. If the criminal background/etc didn't turn anything up, then why would there be a significantly higher bar for Uber compared to a typical cab company.

I'm no über fanboy, but this certainly looks like a piece trying to stick it to Uber and generating negative PR which could scare future users from using uber. Bring out the pitchforks!

Is it me or is Uber being dragged into this the same way craigslist was dragged into somehow being a breeding ground for serial killers who were trolling the "adult services" section, which ultimately resulted incraigslist shutting it down.

I think "we"(humans) need to take more responsibility as a whole. If one of the people in your life boat is drilling a whole in the bottom in the middle of the sea, being able to place blame doesn't matter so much. "We" are all going down if "we" can't do something about it.

We wanted to use a platform that could implement things like PCI, HIPAA & similar compliance issue we may run into. To be honest, as our startup is getting bigger, we just wanted to start going with a "big boy" solution. Don't have an IT team yet, but after talking to a few potential IT folks, it seemed like AWS was the gold standard.

You forgot the bit about configuring a million options before launching an EC2 instance, the persistence (hard drive) supposedly disappearing if you shut down the matchine, not to mention, the SSH key that you MUST set up in order to access the server. DO is significantly more intuitive and faster.

There's a fundamental flaw in that thinking. Greed is far from the only motivating factor in humanity. As a matter of fact, I'd argue that it's precisely the belief in this status quo, that causes sociopathic a-holes to run sociopathic companies. The solution is not necessarily to make everything government run, but perhaps to simply not accept such behavior/thinking as having any place in our society.

Mailbox helped me get control of an otherwise unmanageable email problem. Brad Feld recently recommended outlook. Which is funny because an old version of outlook was the thing that created my email monster & subsequent search for a better email client.

This may sound like a very shallow comment, but what happens to the Wink stuff? I just bought one of the GE Wink light kits & the Wink hub is a "Quirky" product. It's already been a little buggy, but I figured it'd improve over time. Does GE pick up development/support work going forward?

This kinda blows my mind. I mean... on the one hand it's cool, on the other hand, where in the world would I use this in my resume?

Do you deliver in your trucks on Hartal days? It would certainly be awesome if they didn't attack your trucks because you're simply taking food & essentials to people.

How do you deal with the political volatility? I'm pretty sure Amazon doesn't have to think too much about Hartal or their delivery trucks being burned.

Glad I'm not the only one worried about this. I spent a bit of my early career on this type of tech. At first I thought it was really cool and joked with my coworkers about building skynet. Eventually I realized no amount of coolness or money was worth putting my talents to building things that are obviously meant for destruction.

Sure they're tools and can be tools for peace in the right hands. But in the wrong hands, they can do immense damage. Perhaps one of the things that's kept humanity around is that despite the psychopaths in our midst who might not care if they destroyed every other human being, there are others whose conscience would get in the way.

This type of technology, in the hands of the wrong psychopath might mean the end of us. Despite the BS marketing behind AI, NO it is not sentient, it's a bunch of optimization algorithms. Not Good, Not Evil.

I realize that someone will build it. That, is an inevitability. Just know that it doesn't have to be me.

Good question... Somehow if we can get out of the hyper rationalist maximization seeking robot mentality, an answer of some form may present itself. Accepting death helps. Not just my own but that of much more. Buddhism has some very interesting insights here. And I bring up belief deliberately, because the answer here is faith. Not certainty, but faith. Whatever it may be (leave legacy, do no harm, etc), it's doing what you believe that results in a satisfactory answer.

If you were born into a very tough situation in a war torn or third world country, you'd do what you needed to with what was given to you. While we do have a lot of material wealth and might have more free time, we still face the same great equalizer: death. As do our civilizations and our planet (and likely us, way before that). Given the constraints, you can simply "try your best". Living without regrets might be a job to one person, a 90 hour startup to another, traveling and learning to others. Whatever your belief is, following it is the best that you could do. Ultimately you have to answer to yourself & be able to live with yourself. Personally, living selfishly, while it maximizes certain things simply goes against my core beliefs. I don't necessarily know that living less selfishly is necessarily better. But for me, it is. Your beliefs, may defy logic, and may not necessarily maximize legacy, wealth or whatever, but in having acted you will have done your best given the situation to be able to live with yourself, which is all you can ask of yourself.

These gruesome murders are obviously politically motivated. Aren't they inadvertently being helped by the media (not necessarily US media) who publish the grizzly photos of the victims. Just finished "Influence" by Chaldini, and I wonder if publicizing specific murders with gruesome details of death might inadvertently also be encouraging copycats.

I've worked on similar problemsss starting with Microsoft's speech SDK back in the 90's. This is more of a pain the the ass than it first appears to be. I was secretly excited that maybe NSA has cracked a difficult nut here. (NDA be damned, I'd like to see this in the commercial market)

While the whole spying thing is disconcerting, I wonder how much cool tech they have that could be put to commercial use. wondert if theres a path for a government agency such as NSA to share tech breakthroughs with the public sector. Nasa does this to some degree...

This seems a lot like fancy hands, via text messaging. The big difference I see is that there is no monthly commitment. Since my personal assistant quit, I've been using Fancy Hands I have been quite delighted by the service. I'd love to know the model that this business uses. I dug into fancy hands a little bit and it seems like the operations are not quite so straightforward(crowdsourcing what the headache of managing employees). When I first looked through this I assumed this was coded onto fancy hands API. But given the scaling issues and the pricing structure of this app it probably isn't.
