I honestly think desktop notifications in their current form are one of the worst features of the modern web. Sure it's nice to get an email alert but on my experience there's probably a thousand confused old people getting spammed for each person that intentionally enabled it.

What's worse is they look like native OS alerts (on Windows) so when one says "SECURYIRT ALERT!! CALL NOW" it's that much more effective at getting people on the phone with scammers.

This sort of post should result in a permanent ban on any platform. If someone thinks it's too long they can copy and paste it themselves.

We can debate the merits of various drug pricing schemes but at the end of the day, prices are set by a small group of interested actors who want the prices to be as high as they possibly can without causing a violet revolt. It should be cheaper. No circling the block looking for parking, no space needed at all for that matter. That alone is worth giving taxis/ubers at least a different pricing structure.

This breathless article from 2009 [1] (found in 2 seconds by searching "tech will change the world year:2009") is a good example of what most people thought. You can find blog many posts and articles from the time saying basically the same thing. If you forget, back in 2012 people used to tune into Apple's yearly keynote with bated breath in anticipation of what marvelous innovation Apple would grace us with next. An app to replace your therapists? Uber for dogs? Solve poverty and racism? That was the attitude I remember among my peers (college kids and yes, professors too).

Keep in mind this is not true in the Northeast. It’s very common to have multi million dollar homes within spitting distance of dilapidated buildings worth only land value. My parent’s house, while nothing special, sold for a couple hundred thousand when they sold in 2019. A few months before hand our neighbor sold theirs for over 2 million.

Yes, almost all US cities have at least a couple grocery stores that stock imported products and have signage in multiple languages. most common is Chinese or general “Asian” but larger cities have more specific stores that specialize further on Korean, Vietnamese, etc.

In the US, Comcast does this on all business copper connections. They call it "Secure Edge". It frequently breaks DNS, VPNs, some voip, torrents (or any P2P connections), and probably other stuff. It's enabled by default on all new accounts and will randomly be at the account level.

To disable it you have to call them and ask.

You are vastly overestimating the danger involved in this.

If you follow the Sysadmin subreddit, Microsoft routinely has long outages. Last week (or the week before) email was completely down, the admin panel was unusable, etc. Fastmail has been FAR more reliable then Microsoft. Yes, the Fastmail team should be responsive though. At least with Microsoft they internal comms are very leaky with this sort of thing so details are usually public long before it's announced.

Working for me also. Seems to be one of the rare cases where the “down for some people” in a status page actually does mean “some”. Recently when Microsoft 365 was offline for all email services they reported it as a “limited degradation”.

So long as you can buy drugs with Bitcoin it will maintain a certain minimum value, regardless of what happens with these scam companies. If tether where to completely collapse I estimate Bitcoin would fall to to no less then 30% of it’s current value.

The price of bitcoin will never fall faster then the time it takes to login to a darknet market and update a listing.

Sometime last year, someone published a guide on auto-generating subtitles using an emacs plugin and WhisperAI. A lot of anime release groups use it so they can get an English subtitled version of a show released a couple hours after it airs in Japan.

It's nice to have access sooner, especially for less popular shows that might never get any kind of release outside of Japan, but it's a lot worse then most fan subs and sometimes misses entire sections of dialog.

I've been Firefox user for about 10 years. The UI update from last year almost pushed me to another browser, maybe Brave or just giving up and embracing Edge. BUT this UI fix exists [1] and is wonderful. You just paste it into your User profile folder and the custom CSS and user.js fixes the ugly UI.
