Given a domain, code generally changes similarly. For example: You have an app that interfaces with a scale to weigh widgets. At first you support one scale and so you just write code to solve the problem of reading the weight and sending it to the weight processor. After some time, there is a new scale. You now add some abstraction so that they both report a generalized weight message to the weight processor. When you later have to add a third, because you have that generalization, you can tell a new Junior dev "just follow what the code is already doing" and they should have no problem doing just that and add support for the third scale.

That is enough abstraction.

This is going to go badly for them. A lot of people (all iOS users) will not even look at a GM. The used market for them will suffer as well. But, hey, if you need a really cheap used car in 5 or so years, and you don't care about Carplay, GM has you covered!

I don't think you can put an age range on this. As an example: Look at all the QAnon believers. They're pretty much all ages. Look how many of those people went to Dallas for Kennedy's return.

This. I think HN leans very heavy on webdev and somehow forgets that the entire rest of the planet runs on software also.

I implement protocols to communicate with various hardware (RFID, LiDAR, etc). Most of these communicate over sockets. Some still use serial. I have a library I wrote of socket routines that I use, so it's not like I re-implement that every time, though. And for this, I'd really rather use my library than a 3rd party in case I have to dig in and see what's going on.

Having been born in '71, my folks, who loved horror and sci-fi, dragged me along to a lot of these. There was an old drive-in in town that would show this stuff so, we'd pull in, get popcorn and I'd usually fall asleep part way in, but I still remember scenes from Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Incredible Melting Man, etc. Funny, though, many of those movies I never watched again when I was older.
