I read this earlier today and was thinking: how many such mathematically gifted individuals exist I. The world at one time? Assuming there are probably 20-30 Tao-caliber people in the US and an adversarial multiplier of 0.1 (only 1 in 10 such kids are nurtured), we reach 300 for this generation, about 1 in a million.

That means in a generation there are ~ 10k such people in the world. Think about connecting them or nurturing them with AI companions.

Everyone’s entitled to their opinions and more than a few people have written similar ideas. However, I find this chain of thought both offensive to what being a slave meant and ignorant. If you think being a coder is the modern equivalent to being enslaved either you’ve never worked as an entry level employer in the service industry or else have forgotten your experience.

Seeing weird ancient symbols and feeling a great urge to embark on a journey to learn/decipher them is common; actually doing it is much rarer. Think of Champollion who, when shown Egyptian hieroglyphs by Fourier (as it is often mythologized) when he was just 11, devoting his life to them.

However, if you are tempted to take on Sumerian after reading this, I suggest that you start with Akkadian first. Chances are you’ll try to learn ancient languages by self study and you’ll need a lot of reading material: this is the advantage of Akkadian over Sumerian. Also the grammar will be easier to grasp. And it has borrowed a lot from Sumerian, so you can take it as a later step, if you so choose.

If you want to read inscriptions from local museums while keeping the cool ancient script angle, then, of course, go with Middle Egyptian. If, on the other hand you are determined to be one of the handful experts in the world on an ancient language, I’d suggest Hurrian or Luwian.

Putting aside the questions of (as some comments here have) whether

Thanks for clarifying my poorly worded description, that’s exactly what I meant. Like in the example given, the difference is 10-4=6, let’s call this the naive_greedy_miss_factor. Can we choose three other denominations so that NGMF is > 6?

An interesting meta problem is to determine antagonistic set of denominations, like the [10,9,1] example given in the post, to maximize the number of coins selected by the gradient method.

Not fiction but I love this part in Feynman’s The Pleasure of Finding Things Out:

Compare/contrast the Whispering earring/LLM chat with The Room from Stalker, each one is terrifying in its aspect: One because it eventually coaxes you to become a shallow shell of yourself, the other by plucking an unexpected wish from the deepest part of your psyche. I wonder what the Earring would advise if one were to ask it if one should enter The Room.

This was after a long discussion ranging from quotes from Confucius’s Analects ( famous one: 学而时习之，不亦说乎), the “eight-legged” essay answer format for Chinese Imperial exams, Four Books and Five Classics (四书五经), comparison with the Socratic koan “I am wise because I know that I don’t know”, the motivations for the linguist Zhao Yuanren to write the famous tongue twister poem “The Story of Mr. Shi Eating Lions” and other topics.

I don’t have “chronic loneliness”, but the breadth and depth of discussion I have with ChatGPT cannot be matched by any real-life friend: all topics are on tap. TBH, the most comparable interaction would be reading HN.

Like Cypher in The Matrix, I know it’s a “glorified next token predictor”, but ignorance is bliss.

PS: “minor inconvenience of metaphysical incompatibility” is just brilliant, much more romantic than Romeo and Juliet, sums up the essence of the movie A.I.
