It's also important to note that these new rules cover the sale of digital goods to CONSUMERS only, if you are (for example) a registered business in the UK and selling to a registered business in Germany, German VAT is not applied, and you do not have to pass it on (via VATMOSS) to the German government.

On that point (needing a sys admin for say 10 hours a week), where should a currently devs only team be looking? Remote freelancer? Dev with ops / sys admin experience?

* Don't push new code to production while operational problem is ongoing (unless it addresses the operational problem) ^^ absolutely!

Agree. If growth is (reasonably) predictable I think dedicated is a great way to go. Surely if you are aiming for an MVP, you don't want to be worrying about managing multiple boxes and adjusting the amount of RAM, CPU and diskspace they have access to. Better to slightly over provision with a cheap dedicated server then expand when you have a feel for the requirements of the project.

We've recently launched an Direct Debit facility and faced these exact problems. Luckily our DD provider works with some huge companies and so is already insured against any "indemnity claims". This insurance is reflected in our transaction fees though.

Where can I get info on the MySQL 5.5 issues? I'm considering upgrading from 5.1 to get the new InnoDB plugin...

Suboptimal from what perspective? Server processing time & data transfer - maybe, user experience - not necessarily.

Ajax calls aren't by more optimal by definition, it depends on the context.

Agree that worse UX will frustrate users making them less likely to spend time on the site and have less interaction.

For the advertising that is sold on my site, the CPM is determined by the number and quality of Unique Visitors and volume is determined by Page Impressions.

So it's good to have a large number of page impressions, but actually I need to build my audience (UVs) which is more difficult (to a point).

The "industry standard" will vary vastly with the vertical you operate in (sports, technology, barbie dolls) and quality of your site and audience

Good point, I think there is a balance though....

For example, on a site with only one advert per page, I don't think there is any harm in having a new page load rather than an ajax call (which arguably would be the better "user experience").

What shouldn't be encouraged is sending users "around the houses" to get an extra couple of advertising impressions.... which if we were honest is likely to floor the CTR anyway.

The key in most instances is making sure your page loads fast, and let your users get to what they want quickly.

Agree. I'm surprised this article hasn't been more popular or at least prompted more dicussion.

The point about moving away from doing everything from scratch to outsourcing via APIs is interesting from a business perspective as well as programming.

There a number of startups appearing that are nothing more than a mashup of existing technologies that can be harnessed via API.

I posted this a while back: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1136710

We were doing £0.20 ($0.31 US), more recently it's been closer to £0.30.

We did have a period over summer of £0.50+, but this was after a phone call from Google..... I think we jumped "on their radar" at this point and they had some campaigns specific campaigns.

We only run adsense on our backfill, after premium and Adjug.

ditto.... I also do the "trick yourself into doing things" technique.

Good to hear that other people go through the exact same thought process.

I don't know how you manage working from home though... going to the office in a morning works wonders for me. I tend to regress over the weekend; I'm at my peak on Wednesday and Thursday.

Nope. All approximations, but it doesn't sound crazy; considering that someone has inputted a search term and the link will be related to that term. Obviously there are loads of variables but it's probably of the right order (single percentages)....

I've inserted all my company data into the "Social Network" model to see why we aren't netting $10MM yet.

Our main discrepency is Pageviews per UV and sell through rate.

I've got plenty of ideas on how to improve the Pageviews per UV. Sell through rate and CPM are more of a challenge.
