We worry about the “bus problem” when it comes to one dev operations but should we also worry about the “dev getting bored” problem?

I’m not sure what’s happened to Pinboard I hope Maciej is alright.

I tweeted him ages ago asking about if the pin a URL page could become responsive so I don’t have to use a separate mobile app. He’s responded with a joke. Years later and I’m still using the mobile app.

I’ve tried building in load tests to releases and it’s been a headache so far: Test environments cost as much as prod environments suddenly (using premium versions of infrastructure to meet requirements)

Pipelines take a lot longer to run (because the load test environments are expensive we have one or two and serialize test runs on them to stop test runs stepping on each other, but the teardowns are slow, especially on failed runs)

To keep the test run fast we limit them to about 5 minutes but this creates unrealistic expectations of how fast our code would actually need to scale.

But it is nice knowing which changes have broken the load test. Hunting them down is so painful.

What I’d to have is proper metrics showing how close we are to our Non Functional Requirements over time to make it easier to sell “Performance stories” ahead of breaking the NFR rather than just fixing it as we break.

I still can’t believe that the Silvertown Tunnel, the next Thames crossing will require a modern version of this rather than have a dedicated cycle space.

I appreciate cycling close to cars in a tunnel won’t be pleasant but we are slowly moving away from the internal combustion engine, the air will get better and better as electric gets more popular.

Trying to get my Godot project to a stable enough place that I can try early dotnet6 builds.

It’s been quite fun abstracting as much game logic as possible into testable class libraries so I’m hoping it won’t be a bad migration for me.

Really looking forward to seeing if dependency injection will be easier

Stuff like Spotify trying to ram their podcast platform down my throat is pretty obnoxious. I wish I could turn off podcasts.

It looks especially bad when some of the podcasts are unofficial audiobooks releasing for instance a person reading a chapter of Harry Potter every day.

I’ve used laptops for this purpose in the past but I always disliked having my HDDs connected over USB. I was concerned that all my storage felt like it was active all the time even when not being accessed, I was always concerned my drives would burn out faster but I never had any data to back it up.

Interesting to read in the current context of the Silvertown tunnel currently being built despite complaints from both sides of the river and an admission from TFL that it may make traffic worse south of the river.

Not to mention the fact that cyclists can’t use the tunnel…

So to keep TfL afloat the government has to give them money and as part of that they have to spend a large amount of money investigating something most people don’t think is viable. Seems like a good use of public funds.

Anything that helps the web export progress sounds like a good idea to me, I think there’s a lot of potential in that feature.

Being able to play game demos in the browser before installing the full version if you like it would be nice.

But for developers themselves I think it would be really cool to see the output of the tutorial you’re following before you start. It would be pretty motivating to see what’s coming and I think it could help get across some of the concepts which can be difficult in game dev.

I read this article on vice gaming earlier about giving credit to creators for assets used in development that I thought was interesting...

https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/qj4pzd/how-we-assign-cred...

For me it just comes down to the license, I’d probably credit an artist for their work if I used it in a game but if the license doesn’t say that then there’s no onus to right?

If I like the stuff enough to use it in my project then The creator deserves some recognition, is there a reason not to?

Godot 3.1 Released 7 years ago

Also worth noting that you can't currently export C# projects to mobile that was moved to milestone 3.2

I probably wouldn't use this as I would feel bad about it but as a UK listener I've listened to SO MANY adverts from American podcasts for products I can't buy.

I pay for stitcher premium and export the feed to an app that's actually useable.

I recently paid to support Thrilling Adventure Hour on patreon and find it pretty crappy they still have adverts on the paid feed.

I don’t know if it’s sexism or not but is it possible that Fitbit and Apple Watch aren’t so good at tracking your movement/steps when your arms are stable whilst pushing a pram? I think a lot of the data comes from your vertical movement as you walk.

Maybe they just can’t track it.

I’m pretty sure all the MacBook feet are exactly the same, certainly the MBP line are. They could store 10000 rubber feet in a pretty reasonably sized box....

I was amazed when two of the feet on my 2014 MBP came off on the same week.

My perspective from the U.K. is that it’s primarily the swatters fault but the terrible action taken by the police is somewhat “allowed” by US society due to fear of guns being available.

I was trying to figure out how prevalent swatting is in the U.K. and if it could go this wrong. At least here the police don’t have to be as afraid of an armed defence which gives them less of an excuse for overreacting

If you buy an iPhone today does it come with a USB C or USB A cable can I plug my new phone into my top of the range laptop?

Presumably there are going to be a lot of broken 3rd party plugins on people’s sites(design wise at a minimum). Should there have been more of a warning period?

That makes 0 sense to me. Presumably an author can pick a publisher that does or doesn't distribute to libraries. Even then a library is still buying at least one book if not multiple.

If a creator stopped making software you pirated because it wasn't sustainable would you feel guilt?
