CarPlay and Android Auto were engineered from the start to be as agnostic to the car's hardware as possible. Your car's stereo is really just a dumb screen (i.e. just a display and input/output interface) with the phone doing most of the rendering + a few other things (i.e. providing some car instrumentation, like fuel remaining, if the manufacturer enables it) - the hardware requirements aren't really strict from a performance standpoint (minus CarPlay Ultra, and even then, that's just a tighter integration).

It depends on the airport! Some smaller airports (like Corona Municipal Airport where the story is based) - are untowered, meaning that there's no central ATC to chat with when taking off/landing - everyone announces what they're doing as they're doing it and there's a traffic pattern/flow that everyone follows to ensure there's no conflicts - it works surprisingly well.

In the US, you can get shockingly very far without having to chat with ATC.

1. This is an official Docker image/container from Ubiquiti themselves - no more relying on LinuxServer.io/jacobalberty, etc...

2. With the "UniFI OS" branding, the door is open to the possibility of being able to run Talk, Protect, Access, etc... on your own hardware in the future.

I know the intro video is a render - but the folding of the purple sheet looks so... unnatural (to put it lightly) - like the cloth physics do exactly what is convenient for the video and don't reflect reality.

Don't picture them as OTA firmware updates. Picture them as OTA navigation data updates (i.e. maps, charts, waypoints, airport info, etc...) - that's much easier to pull off.

The process right now is pulling out an SD card from your Garmin/Avidyne/BendixKing whatever every 28-days or so (that's how often the FAA updates the navigation database backing these avionics), popping it into your PC, using software/webistes that could be... much better designed (to put it lightly) and then going back again. It's not exactly the hardest thing in the world, but it's not exactly a walk in the park either (especially for less-technically inclined pilots, who just let it lapse, and click out of the big expiration warnings every time they start up their planes).

I can see what was meant with that statement. I do think compression increases Shannon entropy by virtue of it removing repeating patterns of data - Shannon entropy per byte of compressed data increases since it’s now more “random” - all the non-random patterns have been compressed out.

As a pilot, yes, your conclusion is correct - it’s widely known “tribal” knowledge among most American pilots that any reporting on the FAA medical certificate application is ammunition that the FAA can then use to probe for additional information, request further medical tests/notes (which, by the way, likely have to be paid out of pocket), or outright deny the medical certificate, effectively grounding them indefinitely. Appealing that process is long, arduous, and filled with many headaches.

With that said, the application for a medical certificate is a federal form, and willingly lying/omitting information on it is a felony - the FAA has also been known to pull medical records where they can - typically for veterans receiving VA benefits (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/08/27/faa-pilot...) - pilots don’t want to get caught in a lie, so many just outright don’t seek treatment for some conditions - particularly mental health ones.

I see this panel ruling as a positive thing because it’s one less thing pilots have to worry about when applying for a medical certificate - knowing they can see a therapist without fearing potential ramifications (because it won’t have to be reported to the FAA in the first place) is a huge step in de-stigmatizing mental health conditions in aviation.

Carriers in the US are basically required to route 911 calls, even for devices not on their network - I wonder if that’ll include T-Mobile’s/Starlink announcement (since they’re going to be using existing 5G spectrum, I would presume so) - if I’m out in the wilderness and I experience an emergency, in theory, 911 should just work for me, piggybacking off a Starlink satellite, even if I’m a Verizon or AT&T or whatever subscriber - if that’s the case, I don’t see the need for all of these competing Emergency SOS via Satellite offerings.

In order to do this, that would mean not using pilots with an FAA certificate, nor an American-registered aircraft.

Even if they did this over the middle of the ocean, in international waters, if even one of the two things above were used, the FAA still has jurisdiction.

One of the nice things about NetMaker (at least that I've seen), is that it supports the vanilla WireGuard iOS app, just without the mesh capabilities and other automation.

I have my iOS client set up with a egress node on Netmaker, it gave me a vanilla WireGuard config and then I passed that to my iOS device.

Smaller general aviation aircraft still use 100LL gasoline (the LL stands for low lead) - and even though there’s lead-free replacement candidates (still going through regulatory approval, at least in the US), it’s been known that areas around airports with frequent GA traffic have higher levels of lead in the air, and children living near said airports may have elevated levels of lead in their blood (https://paloaltoonline.com/news/2021/08/06/new-study-finds-l...)

In a way, it’s funded by the entities that actually need to pay for an FCC license (mainly commercial ones)… AFAIK, the FCC ULS (Universal Licensing System) is a unified database of all FCC licensees, regardless of type. If paying licensees can fund the database, then tacking on Amateur licenses to it is a marginal (if not effectively zero) cost.

That’s a good way to suddenly get those organizations to magically start using those IPs suddenly - if you threaten to take unused IP blocks away, I’m sure those orgs will somehow find a way to “use” them.

It's funny that GitHub ships their own text editor, Atom, but the second example (under the "More than Autocomplete" header) on the Copilot website is clearly using VSCode.

To be fair, most of the original recordings (with caveats listed there) were linked at the bottom, so I presume that the author still has them around - that's hardly "throwing" them away.

I don't think the goal of using Google speech-to-text was to solely use the transcriptions for the rest of the project, but you've gotta find some way to sift through those recordings and pull out the interesting bits. I think that was the right choice providing additional context and picking out the good stuff. Imagine having to listen to ~28 hours of recordings (60 sec * 1724 answered calls) when there's a service that can easily turn those recordings into a more easily consumable format, and then you can go back and listen to the neat stuff.
