Huge caveat here in that I am not a designer so this is a very amateur take, and I personally like the headlights so I'm quite biased, but I think it's a brilliant design for a couple of reasons:

1. Without having a traditional front grill or badge that is associated with the brand unlike those of legacy makers, Rivian's headlights are a design element which is instantly recognizable as being a Rivian. Even if you post a minimalist silhouette of the front facia, you would know it's a Rivian.

2. The design lends itself well to future evolution, even if the exact dimensions of the vertical oval lights and the bisecting horizontal light bar are changed/tweaked over time, so long as that general design is kept, they will still be identifiable as a Rivian.

Just my two cents as someone with no design expertise and who happens to like the way the headlights and front facia look.

It's likely being posted due to recent interest in B&T due to the killing of the UnitedHealthcare CEO in Manhattan. I don't think there is any specific evidence that this is the firearm which was used but there is lots of online chatter due to it being an integrally suppressed pistol.

I've thought about that myself, and came to the conclusion that in my case the answer will most likely be no. I can't say I'd be too disappointed though, being missed by a handful of friends and family would already signal a life well lived.

I've been using an MD Notebook A5 Grid with the clear plastic cover, and while I try to treat it gently, I have it in a tote along with a pretty bulky and heavy XPS 17 and it hasn't gotten damaged yet. I love that little notebook and started using it after Moleskin discontinued a hardcover notebook that I really enjoyed.

As someone who grew up in the outer sunset where this is also a frequent occurrence, it's surprising to me how so many people engage in such anti social behavior and don't see a problem with it.

If $1300 per year in SFMTA tickets isn't enough to dissuade you, I can only hope that the violations are increased substantially. I wish we would follow the Nordic model of fines being scaled to income.

In addition to RenTech, TGS is another intriguing place that mostly flies under the radar and from all rumors seems to have been fantastically successful over 3 decades. It’d be very interesting to hear about other less known firms with stellar, albeit likely smaller in absolute terms, levels of success.

1. What do these firms typically look for in support staff? I’m asking about non trading/quant roles like recruiting/ops/facilities management?

2. What’s the potential upside, not specifically financial, but more along career growth and opportunities for different roles within the firm if you join in a support function?

While the shootout scene is indeed great, the 2 scenes in Heat that I consistently find myself rewatching on YouTube are the diner scene with De Niro and Pacino, and the final scene in the fields beyond the runways at LAX. The sound and light from the incoming planes mixed with the score is incredible, and I never tire of it.

I assume people worth several hundred million dollars won't spend 10%-50% of their total wealth on a $100+ million yacht, but will still pay $1mil/week to rent one on occasion.

I've always thought that TSMC's dominance in fab processes are a strategic asset in the defense of Taiwan against potential PRC encroachment. I would assume that as long as a large part of the global tech industry relies on TSMC, countries such as the USA would have a strong incentive to potentially protect Taiwan against threats. Does anyone have insight into the geopolitical impacts of Taiwan - USA relations in regards to TSMC fabs on US soil? Would Taiwan view this a strengthening of relations between the two, as I would assume this provides the USA with some "domestic" 5nm fab capacity, or is there some risk in that once this fab comes online the USA may see Taiwan as less critical? Anyone know some good sources discussing the above?

As someone who suffers from infrequent migraines, I can attest to the fact that they are completely debilitating to me. That seems reason enough. I haven’t had the time to read this particular story but a recent one I did read claimed that this led to the retirement of a CIA officer.

Speaking of Edgestream, are there any other successful funds started by RenTec alum? I know of FQS and Merfin, I believe Merfin has been absorbed by Edgestream at this point. Similarly, I asked this question in a prior thread recently but are there any successful offshoots of Thorpe's Princeton/Newport or TGS?

What are some smaller funds of high caliber that little is known about, if you're willing to say?

I’d say it’s best role at this point is to continue being one of the preeminent sites for military weapons systems testing, as has been the case for a few decades now. I’m not sure what would lead you to conclude a gift shop would be of better use.

If anything the urban legends about UFOs and little green men add another layer of obfuscation regarding the projects actually being developed there.

I'm going to preface this by mentioning that I swam competitively starting at around age 6 through high school, was both a life guard and swim instructor at UCSF's rec center during high school, tend to be an overly cautious person, have had to pull a lifeless body from the ocean before, and have witnessed too many near drownings to count.

With that out of the way, does anyone else think its a really bad idea to advise someone who in their own words is trying to develop their swimming skill to the "point of not drowning", to simply find some seemingly calm piece of open water and have at it? I think this is terrible advice. If you aren't comfortable in the water you shouldn't be going into any natural body of water unsupervised, no matter how calm it may appear.

I no longer live in the BA but you should be able to find a YMCA, community swimming pool, or your local community college, that will have adult swim classes for beginners at a very reasonable cost. A couple weeks of classes and you should be comfortable enough to where you most likely won't drown, keep in mind even excellent swimmers drown on occasion.

Once you have the basics down you can join a local Masters club if you want to get more serious. Please don't go practice at Ocean beach.

I worked in Ops as well, albeit as an L1 - L3 part time AA. I was actually surprised, especially after what I'd read online about Amazon, at how much slack they would cut employees regarding rate and other behavioral issues. It always seems like it would take way too long to weed out bad employees. I definitely don't relish anyone losing their job but I'd say my biggest issue working at Amazon was how demoralizing it would be to see so many extremely hard working associates having to pick up the slack for lower performing ones. I'm sure this is fairly site dependent though.

I've worked a number of warehouse jobs, including at Amazon, I didn't find them particularly stressful and I'd say from a physical standpoint they ranged from moderate to maybe slightly higher at the worst. Amazon I would describe as better than most similar lines of work in terms of pay and overall environment.

I don't doubt that there are problematic Amazon locations out there but I never experienced any of the really negative stories I read online despite moving between different locations and building types.

You're probably gaining significant battery life as well.

I apologize for not acknowledging your post earlier, I know it's not exactly within HN etiquette, but I just wanted to say thanks for such a thoughtful response.

I've always imagined if they lived a few decades they would have long ago invented a breathing apparatus that would allow them to survive on land and eliminated humans from competing with them at the top of the food chain.

Bad news for us, on the other hand, Mars would probably be colonized by now.

This is getting very hypothetical here, but I'll be glad to indulge your question. I'm unsure at this stage in my life whether I'll ever have the opportunity to have children of my own, but I would certainly like to. As I've spent some time in the foster care system, and seeing as it ended rather disastrously with me spending a good chunk of my HS years homeless, I'd very much like to get involved in being a foster parent. I'd certainly like to give my child, whether biological or adopted, many of the things that I didn't have growing up. First and foremost would be love, and safety, and the educational opportunities I didn't have. Travel would be the first of things I may categorize as "luxuries" that I'd like to gift.

As to a specific number, my gut feeling tells me $28K seems rather excessive. That's more money annually than I and most of my friends made in total yearly wages for a good chunk of our adult lives, and we all worked rather dutifully. I'm not entirely convinced that the creation of art requires such sums. And $28k could certainly help a lot of other children in need.

In any case, I'd like to think one of the most satisfying aspects of parenting is watching a child transform into an adult, I'm unsure whether a perpetual yearly stipend equal to the wages of large segments of this country is the best method to achieve that goal. But assuming my child was the recipient of such privilege, I'd hope I would have taught them the humility to understand just how privileged they were, and in general refrain from criticism based on generalities.

Having absurd amounts of money certainly doesn't make bias go away, but it definitely makes such bias more bearable. I've been subject to numerous indignities due to "shopping while black", I've also gone hungry and had to resort to sleeping under overpasses, the two are incomparable.

$28k a year in free money was an almost unimaginable sum to myself and many of my friends, most black but some white, when growing up. It's my general experience that people at this level of privilege don't have the ability to truly understand how privilege, or the lack thereof, impacts the entirety of your existence, and should refrain from castigating others for their perceived privileges, it's splitting hairs at this point.

I'm in agreement that there isn't a credible movement to eliminate white people, but I still feel that if companies, and social media sites in particular, are going to have guidelines around acceptable speech on their platforms, they should probably be applied equally regardless of what groups they may target.
