I don't have answers to such as you put it the existential question of our generation(s) but I do wanted to extend some human connection in forms of appreciation that I (yes a human) really appreciated reading your comment and there were some wonders in the past which created the whole ecosystem where you can type on a keyboard and I can read on a screen and type back almost instantaneously and communicate. What an amazing time, I imagine people maybe even kings of vast lands from past feeling the time taking for mail to reach and would be just shocked by this technology and others we have created in what, a lifetime of progress and collaboration.

A famous quote that I remembered right now which feels apt: "We are more connected yet disconnected than ever before"

I would then have to wonder if all the time saved in the first place at all. I have heard anecdotes of verifying AI output to be more time-consuming and generally even more painful/stressful than doing the whole work yourself perhaps.

As an employee, I would prefer to not be stressed and as an employer, I would prefer to not additionally stress my employee on all times so that I can have them use the stress for the works which truly matter the most (which is a limited resource as an employee shouldn't be burnt out or shouldn't be given unlimited stress)

Also its probably the ethical thing to do but even rational logic dictates so in my honest opinion (not sure how much of it works exactly on documentation stuff though*)

I think we have forgotten how great real life was at getting stuff done. The computer was supposed to assist them and for a time it did. That is until we forgot what it was for and made it replace life altogether.

I read the book how the internet happened (great book btw) and I would politely like to refuse this claim :)

Or perhaps there could be a separation between the computer and the internet (or more accurately the browsers)

When only computers existed, there were assists of working tools (maybe older versions of docs,excel etc.) but when the internet browsers happened (Netscape), from the very start of it, there were ideas of advertisement and monetization of it.

The only reason that internet turned out to be so open in the start was that Netscape wanted to have it open to get as much turf as possible before Microsoft realizes and they did everything and even then Microsoft had too much monopoly and they released Internet Explorer.

Before internet or pre-dawn of it, there were people with computer magazines and people tinkering and it might be one of you judging from writing code by hand :)

There was an real passion in it and people like you followed it, until the internet experiment really worked and then sooner or later things from internet started reverting to some form of enshittification and immense advertisements and stock markets wanting more advertisements leading to wanting more retention and wanting to create/replace life altogether (most literally Meta and its failed metaverse)

While writing this comment, I have come to insight: Internet had come to replace to the Television (Information Highway) but lately it has ended up becoming one. The last line of "That is until we forgot what it was for and made it replace life altogether." might apply to television as well and the only bottleneck during that time was the technology which seems to have been the internet as now we have youtube,insta,tiktok with infinite scroll feeds, so perhaps things have always been like this way but you were never exposed so much to that side but now its coming for the coding side of things which you are passionate about.

In that sense nothing is as good or as bad as it seems but we are certainly going on a downward trend perhaps depending on the metric and I would prefer living in the golden past so I envy you :)

I'm more so undecided on them because of the social effects on them. I am all for innovation but social media hasn't been the ideal example either (Facebook famously has young girls who are insecure who might delete their pics and not upload them and would show them predatory ads on top of it with countless other examples)

I am one of the younger folks on this website and I honestly feel like it might've been much better for us in the past pre social-media perhaps.

Have we as a society ever truly reflected on innovation. Nuclear innovation comes to my mind in terms of arms race (ironically which I believe that Nuclear could've been really great for power production and I hope that it gets more looked into)

I am also unsure if regulation might make sense, regulation has been tried and nothing seems to work. I had a decent chat with simon once and sort of the conclusion from that and others seems to be that the cat is out of the box.

Thus we might have to think some more about the sentimental values instead as well and do proper evaluations on if it should be used and when.

The whole culture towards AI perhaps can be seen like a fake projection of confidence. Similar to how as you point out from the deterministic/undeterministic part of it from technical point of view as well. (Many) People are projecting AI to be completely deterministic when in reality it sort of isn't.

Pre-AI, you had some work X and you were given some salary Y and you did the work in time T, now you are expected to 10-100 times X work in time T but given the same salary Y

People are worrying about their salaries and future and some people especially within Silicon valley are worried for whats to come next with AI datacenters raising electricity prices and this fear of permanent underclass and job insecurity and a terrible job market with layoffs partially because of AI spending.

If it feels stressful, its because it probably is. I imagine that some people as such might feel that reading the very same AI documentation with the same passion/care is hard.

So yes, AI has a long uphill battle in winning over the average Joe because everything in its current implementation is actively trying to screw average Joe if we think about it

but it differs depending on your incentives on your current time. In your current job, you are the one writing these AI docs in minutes, now imagine spending hours reading those very same AI docs with all the things that I have mentioned, perhaps I hope you understand why it might be more frustrating.

(also when I mean average Joe I would consider software engineer folks like us to be the one more effected than even other professions so we are the average Joe I am talking about. Its not all gloom and doom though and the average joe is split between liking/disliking it and having a nuanced opinion in the middle)

I have made appseed[0] (asciinema link[1]) which used zapps[2] which did a lot of tricks to achieve in end what this kernel patch could help in doing and hopefully more in the future!

My appseed project didn't work for large projects like OBS but I feel like the approach that this does could lead to mass adoption given that its now a kernel feature. It could in theory allow more portable binaries across Linux which is really cool :)

Yeah exactly, It is meant to mean/sound something in a way which could impress people or get any desirable outcome but in reality it means nothing or sometimes even opposite in a way similar to double-speak, recent layoffs and how they are worded seems to be another example.

These words are sometimes like schrodingers cat and this is also what I have observed that within recent layoffs, its really hard to accurately find what the real intent behind it was within some companies and there is no wide consensus.

Perhaps this is their true purpose, to hide the real intent behind things and perhaps (to give the benefit of doubt?)

There is a tug of war between people and platform as such across this diagonal axis.

People want value whereas platforms want content, the incentives between a viewer and platform/content creator are getting broken because of the overhead incentive of the platform/content creator for money aka content.

There are some places where its not the case, namely wikipedia (aside from its recent controversies) and archive.org both being non-profit, though there are issues with non-profits as well in terms of their funding and other things. Open source being the example of it in terms of how much value it gives us but there is a lack of funding of that as well.

There has to be some balance in all of it but it seems that the balance is binary-like. Either we are seeing mostly open source underfunded software or we are seeing platforms/content-creators using their power for more money.

It also comes to the point that GP comment makes though, content is created by the expectation of profit and so that is its benchmark but value is created for something more emotional but people also like to eat food and would prefer to do so doing work on open source/the work they like for example but then it also pushes itself into content boundary rather than value.

@tombert has a comment about it which says that they are writing blogs and creating value for the sake of it because they have job on the side and its just the first example that I got reading this thread but many people actually create value as such, but as such they are creating value "in-spite" of incentives and the actual incentives are working on the opposite side of value creation.

It is similar to how actual Musicians in music industry are really exploited by all the systems around them yet they still create Music (value) in-spite of all of it because creating music (value) means more to them than all the issues and there is something human about creating value/music. if money follows content and content follows money, perhaps content is just value which follows money and being shallow rather than something deeper and all these dynamics that interact with each other are leading to a tug of war in the first place.

Let me give you a personal example as well, I am Hindu and Milk is very very preferred where I live. Due to my taste preference, I dislike Milk but I am really expected to have something milk based so I like Yogurt.

Even just this small act of preference of yogurt rather than Milk which could seem pretty small has genuinely left my relatives asking many many questions and I am sometimes forced to drink milk when I go to people when I would prefer otherwise because of social pressure.

I can probably take vegan yogurt if I particularly want so but we take milk fresh from the milkman who owns the cow in their house. where I live, the way people treat animals in their house is a very ethical point of view, its basically like how pets are except they help in livelihood/income

So I have some sympathies to people who you are talking about. There is enough social pressure from the people around you.

More broadly speaking, Veganism might perhaps land better as a spectrum rather than a binary switch. It has a lot of things going for it which could help its future but at the same time, it gets a large amount of flack from a loud minority and bad clips

There is a concept that my maternal grandmother had that they would always having their own husbandry (cows/buffalos) within her village and yes, they didn't eat eggs as well.

My maternal grandfather was a teacher which was a really prestigious job at that time, the only reason that they had their own cows was because of the belief. Reflecting upon it now, I believe it to be a good faith belief, they took care of the animals as well in terms of personal care from what I've heard of stories growing up, my mother still remembers some of the cows/buffalos and their names and other things so that's nice to hear as well :)

This is an insightful comment that you have written and I appreciate you writing it, I had bought many pocket notebooks from a local shop but I ended up using them less than I imagined though I do have it near me but I don't end up writing on it.

Personally I have found recently that Excalidraw is really good in terms of drawing with one of the mouse that I have (Logitech Razer) though I also found that drawing with mouse or staring into screen while writing is a bit more dizzy experience than I expected and I still thrive on pen/paper when thinking about coding problems and within that a standard A4 size notebook really does wonder but the problem to me is also what many people here face and I didn't know that everyone felt so much of this exact same problem!

I will try to keep the pocket diary in my pocket now, and probably a pencil (maybe mechanical) with it :)

No not really, nobody has to be using AWS itself per se to be honest, there are still alternatives around.

I mean I own a 7$/yr vps that I pay with crypto and my stack usually involves golang/rust and oh I also self host my mail for temp-mail esque things on that server and I have some other servers floating around as well.

Its just that everyone uses AWS which is the wrong issue here to be honest. If you ask me, aside from the ram pricing caused by AI inflation, things are pretty good. The issue is that not many people know about server providers and other things and default to AWS/Azure etc. because big companies and small companies alike are using them.

Most banks are completely mercenary and ruthless unless its in their incentives to other outcomes. Incentives lead to outcomes and mostly AMEX's incentives are in being the most trustworthy because their real targets are mostly billionaires/heavily influential people.

This does feel a bit silly for amex to do from what I've heard. Probably 2008 were a weird time in general where trust in systems itself were mostly eroded, whether of people to banking institutions and also vice versa.

(I eventually admitted to myself that Amex isn't a person and thus not really capable of insulting my honor, but it took a while!)

I think that this might reflect more on Amex to be honest.

Amex realises that threatening would hurt their business trust more than anything. During the great depression, Amex accepted checks from other banks which were falling and paying through their own wallet as a matter of integrity. Amex has always been built around this idea of trust and prestige.

They make most of money from what I have heard on the transaction fees which are more than others (3% compared to 1%). They might get desperate but I am sure that they are one of the last guys who would wanna threaten you if you are paying some large bills for them (as compared to normal credit card companies which might even hire people to extract your loans in some messy situations)

So perhaps be so rich that the credit card company understands it as well and treats ya differently :-D

Hm yeah I understand, there were some issues in Fractal where it didn't support spaces sometime back (I am not sure about it right now), it was fun talking to the team at gnome though making fractal.

I liked Cinny, but wasn't a huge fan of a web-based client.

Ah I see, I don't really run matrix on phone but yeah I understand what you mean, aren't there some clients like fluffychat and others for Android though? Certainly not as polished as Cinny I imagine but it should be workable (hopefully) from my time seeing some of its screenshots. another side nitpick of matrix protocol but I have heard from people that Matrix clients sometimes take battery consumption.

When I was making https://mirror.forum I had my fair share of trying various protocols and to be honest, I feel as if we have enough good open source solutions out there that the tech part just isn't the limiter anymore and FOSS solutions in general might be good enough but its the network effects which are the issues.

IMO its a low hanging fruit to replace from discord to fluxer given how similar the overall UI/UX is. I also think that Fluxer also has a mobile client or is working on that.

For matrix, I don't use the original client but rather cinny. This client is so good that I wish that other clients and it looks really good in UI/UX, honestly I have had some serious thoughts of porting this UI sometimes: https://cinny.in, so I would be curious what you think about this as well.

(Side note: Fractal and the matrix element fork called schildichat are interesting as well. It is also possible to run matrix in terminal for what its worth as well, and nhekochat is good as well. Fractal runs on gtk and nheko runs on qt. I do agree though that running matrix homservers is a bit bulky sometimes from what I have heard but the client scene is probably really good so I am curious what you think about cinny :-D )

Zulip is amazing. Nothing against that but what are your thoughts on fluxer and the others (recently chatto seems interesting, matrix, stoat are interesting options as well).
