Barely related tangent - but the speed of how quickly this site populated the full list of all these UUIDs (it's likely static) made me remember this site https://unicode.org/emoji/charts/full-emoji-list.html which seems to programmatically generate the page every single time (are there that many new emojis that this is needed) and as a result the page takes minutes to load (I've never let it finish).

I had an identical experience: in my area all of the comments were disparaging ethnic groups and having lived here my entire life the specific groups targeted were not even accurate.

To me it feels like a place to vent about an "other" you suspect may or may not be there.

Thanks - I actually used cactus and llama years ago when I got interested in playing diablo 2 again and it was really cool to try out the older versions of the game and to play around with the larger stash.

Curious - I remember thinking about this a few times after using it - I don't see the binaries in git anymore, was this done for performance reasons or did Blizzard reach out?

I agree that clicking on what appears to be a placeholder but instead acts as a label should at the very least focus the input box so you're prompted to type in it. However the UI overall is pretty simple and clean.

Also a good reminder that it's a very good idea to have the screen lock after a set time — even if it's long.

Yeah if you give it the dimensions of a standard gaylord (48x40) it tries to stack the boxes in a really strange way with smaller boxes occupying the space below larger boxes and causing some boxes to float. I wonder if additional metadata is needed such as (1) box weight (2) resistance to being crushed and (3) priority (not sure if this is relevant when shipping but it will decide which boxes don't "fit" on its own).

This turned me off to Pixel phones indefinitely. I got the Pixel 6 Pro and it could not figure out what it should be connected to: WiFi, 5G, or 4G and of course rather than just choosing one it decided to not have any connection whatsoever unless I moved a few hundred feet to a different location or rebooted the phone. There was lots of discussion around this and youtubers even covered it but rather than fix the issue Google focused on releasing the next phone.

Good to hear. I was in the ER in March 2020 initially because I thought I was having a heart attack but ultimately with what I assume was COVID. It's been a journey but I am doing much better now too. For about 2 years I had bad palpitations too but they've mostly gone away and the fatigue is beginning to subside.

I agree with you about dev boards but I think their post was focused on things like used NUCs or other small x86 machines that are only marginally larger than a Pi in an enclosure and include literally everything you'd want (enclosure, pwa fan, SATA SSD, NVMe, wifi, etc.) and the software support is there (linux / windows).

You'de be really surprised how irrelevant a major and degree can be - for example I used to work with an engineer who carries a highly technical PhD and required extensive assistance with even the simplest tasks (often hour+ just to understand the ask and then more time on engineering a solution) - and I also had an art major intern who really just wanted to be a dropshipper who devoured any work I gave them and delivered amazing stuff.

anecdotally - I feel windows has gone the opposite direction and switched places with linux in terms of ease of installation. I've been using Linux for decades now but had to install Windows 11 for a gaming machine I built:

* I couldn't install windows 11 because it was "missing drivers" (this took me back to 95) * Tried installing Windows 10 instead thinking to eventually upgrade to 11 * Got stuck in an update loop where it tried to install update named like 2H02 ~20 times (I wasn't paying attention to what it was actually updating and just kinda kept trying to update it until it was finished) * Tried to troubleshoot the issue, tried a few things * Gave up, installed ubuntu, checked how well the game works on Steam and it ran OK

I _almost_ posted it to my internal team until I saw IM Used :)

You could make the argument that this is more of a GNU + Linux than an operating system unto itself.

If we were talking about alcohol consumption "slow down and think about it" absolutely makes sense: I might be having fun in my 20s binge drinking but there are very real negative consequences of that behavior long term.

But in the scenario where someone is in their car with their mask on I'm missing the "slow down and think about it" rationale. (Again, I've heard the talking points on this, so I'm looking more for a real answer).

To each their own, but I do not. Lenovo remains my "goto" if I have to buy a laptop (though Framework has more or less replaced them) and the main reason for that was the Trackpoint and mouse buttons.

It's not for everyone but I transitioned to ChromeOS for this exact reason. You still have a debian environment you can work in (run CLI, GUI apps) but the base desktop environment is ChromeOS which "just works" as they say.

Unfortunately this is not always the case - I am not sure if this is an issue with the ability of precision-guided bombs to hit a target reliably or the assumed lack of concern for the non-military victims that the bombs will impact.

Any chromebook that supports crostini will allow you to run linux (debian by default) and allow you to use many dev tools. I build node stuff all the time on chromeos. I have a Framework Chromebook.

1. It is the only OS that "just works" for me. It's the only non-Windows that I can actually plug multiple monitors into and not have it flip out and freeze for minutes.

This sums up my experience completely - I used linux for over a decade and finally got tired of the little annoyances that no desktop environments seemed to solve. ChromeOS wraps it all up (presumably because the hardware is known and the OS is built against that hardware). And then Crostini allows me to do all the fun full stack development things (like k8s, minikube, docker, etc.)

I think it also depends on your definition of crime or the type of crime that is being committed as outside of the scope of truly violent crimes or crime where there is a clear victim there are a lot of crimes that really should not be a crime in the first place (like possession of certain plants) and there may be many instances of truly victimless crimes that would go "uncaught" and thus untracked if an authority figure was not observing them.
