You must not have been around for what the 80's/early 90's had churned out. Any number of songs from 2 Live Crew and Too Short make WAP seem tame by comparison.

Despite the moral panic at the time surrounding those groups/artists, we still managed to survive and grow as a country, and especially with regards to free speech.

I only see one version of this video on youtube, the first incident. I swear years ago when this was posted here, there was a different version I saw with more stuff going on and the audio was much more clear than the first. Am I missing something or is there more than one Max Headroom signal hijack video out there?

This is actually a big deal for me and probably one of the main reasons why I asked the question. Facebook did this exact same thing in the past (not sure if its changed) where even if you don't give them permission to scan your contacts, they will be suggested as "people you might know". I deleted Facebook recently and I was hoping Signal would at least try to be better than the underhandedness of Facebook, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

So all of what is happening in China with regards to Tibet and Uighers is part of a disinformation campaign, piecing together the totality of the sources you provided?

On a somewhat related topic, I noticed massive amounts of gifs that I would typically discover through Android's keyboard option (hooked up to Giphy I believe) were deleted sometime last year (tons of content, even obscure stuff, related to pop culture and movies, even DBZ abridged stuff). I was not sure if this was done by the website hosting these gifs or the users themselves but it was such a large number across so many genres that I suspected the website scrubbed them for whatever reason (also cannot be found through the main website itself).

Additionally, I've been looking for gif hosting websites and Google does not make one mention of Gfycat anywhere in their search results for keyword "gif websites", and this is after going through the first 5 pages of results, which seems a bit odd to me.

edit: I found Gfycat on the 7th page of Google search results, interesting...

Just to go off on a bit of a tangent: There's something to be said about the past being inappropriate today. We should have 2 Live Crew post lyrics from their 80's and early 90's material on Twitter and see how quickly they are outcasted from society.

I wonder how something like this is even remotely debatable, its not like we invented free speech just the other day and now are working out the finer details of whats ok to say in front of law enforcement, let alone the fact that it seems like they have wide discretion to interpret the law at that particular moment according to how they are feeling emotionally.

On the other hand, what if you refuse to speak to any officer, even one that has no probable cause but would like to know if its gonna rain today and asks if you could check your phone and tell him and you decide to ignore or walk away from said officer? Does that establish enough probable cause (granted the officer feels slighted) to order you to speak or perform an action or present ID? Then, if they decide you are not complying with orders and put cuffs on you, how ironic would it be that you now have the right to remain silent once under arrest but never before?

I'm indifferent to her in any regard but it would be interesting to see if this gets more attention as we get closer to 2020. Seems fairly straight-forward that she was defending the right of a prosecutor to get away with fabricating evidence.

You have a link that's not an opinion piece? I've searched for this court case and anytime Kamala Harris is mentioned, the articles are blogs or very suspect reporting websites. Also they all have identical content, looking as if each website copy and pasted the content between themselves.

I still cannot believe that in order to use the latest Apple watch, you still need an iPhone 6 or later with iOS 12 or later. I was dead set on grabbing a watch once I heard what it would feature but after reading the small print, why would I spend money on getting an iPhone, then an expensive monthly plan, followed by a watch, then a separate plan for that?

Is there something I'm not seeing? This seems like a lot of money to front just to get into the device I really want but at the same time having to deal with something I don't want, plus 2 monthly plans.

Edit/update:

So as it stands now, $749 for an iPhone XR, roughly $80/month plan, $499 for GPS + Cellular watch, and $10/month for watch (based on current series 3 watch plan).

That basically breaks down to $1250 plus taxes in upfront costs to get access to a device that, for me anyway, has more useful utility to it than the phone, plus over $100/month (again, after taxes) just so I can utilize the full feature set of said watch.

Who are the people that we are sending off to college?

I don't believe that the vast majority of kids are intellectually nor morally challenged enough before they enter the college atmosphere and those that do give profound thought to life (i.e. why is it OK for the president to curse and say borderline racist things in his speeches but thought provoking books with similar sounding rhetoric are banned from schools) are typically ostracized from the rest of society for not conforming.

Along with social media and the competitiveness of this country for getting ahead in life, college kids, possibly unwittingly, fight tooth and nail to align with others in solidarity of causes and opinions that were never properly reflected upon before by the individual but because they want to maintain friendships or make new ones or even put themselves out there for the sake of personal vanity or gain, you now suddenly see the blind leading the charge against opposing opinions and rhetoric, but to what end?

Instead of people telling others how they should feel about every topic and what side they need to take, people really need to focus on why they care so much in the first place about anything in general and equally important, recognize when they are being trolled just for the sake of getting a reaction out of them.

Very interesting. Coworker of mine found this site while googling for refrigerators, popped up as a typical search result. We saw the address in California too, some random residence, really makes one wonder what is going on here.

I thought it was fairly interesting that they would limit the posts you could see, seeing as this would limit time spent on Facebook but it is equally interesting that their response to this is basically "if you want to continue feeding your addiction to content, go and find more friends to add."

I am speculating that it is possibly a money laundering site, was hoping others could chime in.

I'm actually hoping that somebody will look into this further and from many different angles and scenarios since people don't seem to realize how much of what they don't see is likely due to Google's search algorithms, not to mention the junk that is most promoted to the top of the results pile.

All of these ads shared one thing in common... They appealed to ignorance and the uneducated across every demographic, and it worked.

I see how the author would reference various sources and names to support their position, much like you would in a scientific paper, but it does come off as a bit egotistical and self-righteous when you have to drop so many names to support your unoriginal thoughts (The Game analogy is spot on).

I caught that too, can only imagine what the public at large will think of this were it to happen.

I went into this movie full on ignoring the metaphorical connections to the real world and let it exist in my mind as just an entertaining movie and story and to my surprise, it blew me away (although obviously far from perfect).

Its interesting to see people pick this movie apart, as if the originals had perfect acting, no flaws, and were the epitome of originality (were you expecting your life to change after watching this?)

Personally, I think Luke's change in demeanor was perfect, which not so ironically, he is pretty far from. Luke is human, which he conveys very well and is probably what upsets people the most because he doesn't reach this state of perfection upon which he has mastered the force, his feelings (he's not Leonard Nimoy), and has total control of self (again, not a Leonard Nimoy).

Could it be possibly that people are still holding onto the idea fed to those of us born in the 80's and onward that every one of us is "special", that our dreams will come true if we just believe in ourselves and never give up? These may be the people that do not care for the more realistic approach to Luke Skywalker, as opposed to the "one who will bring balance to the force."

Comes off sounding like a business transaction, which is fine if that's how you plan to leverage the idea of marriage, but then again it probably should be properly labeled as a joint business venture/partnership where people have written agreements to protect each other's assets in case of things going badly between them.

To me, post and pre-nuptial agreements merely reinforce the idea that either you or your partner or both don't trust each other and are together out of mere convenience. If that were the case, why not just stay unmarried?

BTW, the level of support for the husband, among the hacker news community, so far, is pretty astounding, contrasting with the support the wife receives on reddit. Not to paint with a broad brush but I think this really says something about the kind of people running things in tech, not to mention all the stuff women had to put up with in the news the past couple of years with regards to any tech workplace.

In any case, I'd have to disagree and say that even though you can't escape ads or even 100% avoid the lure of electronic clicks and taps, its ultimately up to you to decide what you do with your time and money and if you cannot do this yourself, then you need to seek help.

Just because a corporation has unlimited resources committed to targeting a person with ads or tappy and clicky stuff, it does not mean they should be held accountable for people's addictive habits or tendencies, just as you can't hold any existing casinos liable for a person's poor gambling choices.

Only if you allow it to be, just like with any other compulsive activity, if it starts affecting your life negatively, you should probably make some personal life changes.

This reads like a call for government regulation of advertising or how content is served to people because people cannot defend themselves from this media onslaught.

I believe something similar to China's regulation of the web may be what you're looking for, but I'm old enough to vote and go to war so I'm old enough to decide how often my "free will" is attacked.
