You don't have to have a server, workstation motherboards support lots of memory channels.

I was lucky to buy a lot of RAM before prices skyrocketed. I knew I wanted to play with this stuff, so I spent what felt like a lot of money at the time to buy 8x96GB DDR5-6400 RDIMMs. Now the same RAM costs at least 6x more.

You're right, it's just additional text that allows it to do thinking / reasoning-like behavior. The big proprietary models hide the real output from the user and instead provide a friendly abridged version, but that's just to protect their secret sauce from distillation.

I'm at my computer now and I took a second look, and honestly that beige edition is damn good nostalgia bait. I still find it to be an odd direction to go, but it does look very good for what it is.

Retrocomputing Roundtable has talked about the new Commodore company over the course of a couple episodes, and I thought they brought up a good point about “what is it that people actually want from Commodore,” and the best answer they came up with is “to be 12 again.”

A new C64 with modern video output, a disk emulator, a SID chip replacement so you don’t need an original… that’s all good, but beyond that, it’s hard to say. This phone, though? I don’t think anyone saw that coming, and I don’t see how this could possibly be the right move.

Kind of orthogonal. Traditional AWD and part-time 4WD systems are solutions to get power from a single motor to both the front and rear of a vehicle. AWD has a center differential to account for differences in front and rear driveshaft speeds when driving on high-traction surfaces. 4WD just locks the front and rear driveshaft rotation together, which is a simple and robust solution that only works on loose surfaces.

With separate front and rear electric motors, there's no center differential to worry about, and a sufficiently sophisticated motor control system can make it behave well on and off road.

Interesting! Yeah, that's quite expensive. For some reason I was thinking some of the useful cobots I had seen in the past were in the $10k range, but from a brief look around, that doesn't seem to be the case.

An additional complication is that MI250Xes are two GPUs in one package, so you need to connect the first and last x16 SERDES groups to the host, otherwise you'll only see one GPU (or it won't work at all, idk).

Also, the cheap HPE pulls on eBay need some proprietary HPE magic to work, and I have yet to see anyone figure that out.

That’s how industrial VFDs do motor overload protection, they just keep track of heat accumulation (based on current) vs dissipation (based on fan speed) and fault when a threshold is reached. Probably there’s more nuance to it, but that’s the gist of it.

Do you have to put it in a build/execute mode (separate from a planning mode) to allow it to move on? I use opencode, and that's how it works.

This can result in some funny interactions. I don't know if Claude will say anything, but I've had some models act "surprised" when I commented on something in their thinking, or even deny saying anything about it until I insisted that I can see their reasoning output.
