To this day, Event Horizon is one of the scariest premises to a horror movie I have ever watched. And it's thanks to Sam Neill's performance that it lives rent free in my head.
Love this guy. Gonna miss him :(

I cannot believe how much time I spent playing this. In fact, I am still playing this! You have done such an amazing job with such a simple idea.
If I can, my only feedback is that the battle system is REALLY hard for me. If there were keyboard shortcuts to block I wouldn't complain, but having to mouse to block is too much. I ended optimizing by letting one on the left or right die and then praying I could block enough to kill the boss.
Really great work! Seriously love this stuff!
This person's other articles are defending AI water usage and such.
Forgive me for not caring too much.
Yeah I know, and I hate it.
I'm in this weird space where I'm working for a company on behalf of my actual company. And the company I'm being farmed out to does not care for us because we are contractors in a sense. This resulted in us being brought on board without any training, any knowledge transfer, and guidance, and being told "get to work".
The result is when I ask people for information regarding the organization or code bases they come back to me with "ChatGPT said this", where ChatGPT is an internally hosted AI stack.
It's gotten to the point where I've given up and just have the internally hosted AI writing unit tests for me because their organization doesn't care about us, and as a result I just don't care about them.
The worst part is the tests seem to be reasonably working. Which is terrifying because I actually know the language or testing framework very well. I'm effectively working in a junior capacity without any training or guidance and my merge requests are getting pushed through.
It's going to be interesting seeing how these organizations that force AI in the workplaces age, because there are no longer experts in the code base. Only slop.
Maybe a nice halfway point would to be vegetarian...
Unfortunately they are. They're a former shell of what they were. I think they're changing their focus to lenses or something. Last I heard they're partnering with Google and it's absolute ass. The company is effectively dead and being carved out for parts by Google is my take.
It's a real bummer because they were the only company I was actually interested in seeing pursue Augmented Reality. Now it's literally the most evil companies Meta, Google, and Apple.
The 90s optimism of future tech is dead and all that's left is whatever this is.
Damn. I wish we could get the release of the 35mm colors in the way they look in the comparisons. The Aladdin one specifically looks so good! It makes me feel like we're missing out on so much from the era it was released.
I absolutely hate this. Great to the OP for amazing work, but I am so sad that we're living Black Mirror dog world instead of Star Trek equality world.
There needs to be a new word for when you're impressed, but so depressed at what is being achieved.
There's dozens of us. Dozens! Seriously though, having a lightweight text editor like Sublime that I use is an interesting comparison when I see people immediately reach for tools like VS Code. Especially my juniors.
The thing about VS Code is not that it's bad, it's just, like everything and the kitchen sink? Sublime Text just feels like a really nice tool bench that your craft for yourself.
I'm really happy to hear there are others out there.
(And yes, I totally bought the license, but never enter it in)
I agree with you a million percent, so you're not alone in this. But we are very much the minority :(
It feels like people aren't interested in being creators. Just consumers. And that shows in how media and companies refer to people as consumers.
I wish there was a way to reverse this trend. It feels in many ways like a Plato's cave kind of situation.
My dude, what do you call the Apple Vision Pro? I don't like the technology or product, but they're LITERALLY making a new product line.
Jesus christ. I'm so deep into my current game I'm hesitant to move away. But this is bad...
I don't know what to do. I have a huge sunk-cost fallacy here.
I guess I'm going to ship it and pray, and then never use Unity again.
Jesus christ, what were they thinking?
Fuck Unity.
Hell yeah brother! It's our data, we should own it.
How come I can "buy" a movie on Amazon prime, but I can't download it to any device I want?
How come I can only stream on spotify and not purchase digital albums?
Our rights have eroded so quickly and so deeply that people forget one of the biggest selling points of the original iPods was carrying around YOUR music.
Everything is a subscription. You'll own nothing, and like it.
It's our data, it's our privacy. We should be able to own and control both.

I think the most pernicious part of this has been how normalized all of this is.
I grew up during 1990's air travel and it was still pretty great back then.
For a lot of the younger generation, they are so used to the disrespect from start to finish as a result of 9/11.
The good old days - in no specific order
- TSA Body Scans that used to be simple metal detectors
- Not having Disneyland-like Fast Passes, for TSA Scans (I cannot believe this is real)
- Being able to wait at the gate for people
- Not being charged insane amount of money to get mediocre services before your flight
- Extra seat room
- Flights that weren't over booked
- Actual in-flight meals
- Actual in-flight snacks
- First class that was actual first-class quality
Man I can go on. I hate flying so much now-and-days, and it KILLS me, because I try to articulate this to younger folks, and they shrug their shoulders because they're been raised in this. And the worst part is I KNOW it was better before the 90's. It's just been an absolute enshitification that has become such a disruptive force in my life when I decide I want to travel anywhere, and it's a fucking bummer.

I have been ranting and raving that surveillance capitalism is the worst thing to happen in the modern world. It's not just personal privacy it ruins, but also community privacy it ruins.
My community is nothing but ring cameras and it drives me nuts because it means I'm always being monitored. I hate it so much.
People just aren't free to be people in private anymore.
Or. Hear me out. Why don't these companies actually give me back the ability to control my devices? Why is the onus on me? Why don't these fuckers do the right thing. So tired of this what-aboutism bullshit.
I'm so sick of this.
I don't feel like I own my devices anymore.
Floating Point Operations Per Second [1]
Look random internet person. I'm not going to sit here and try to solve an incredibly complex problem - one that I don't have the tools or ability to even begin to approach.
But I am telling you that monitoring and surveillance is not the first, second, or even tenth potential choice available to start tackling this problem.
This isn't the only solution to this problem. We shouldn't be jumping to this end immediately.
A lot of you are missing the point that censorship is a slippery slope. And that this kind of moderation exists as surveilance tool. I do not understand why people are so excited to allow this kind of surveillance creep across all aspects of their life.
I can't leave my house without being monitored by ring cameras. I cannot go to work without being monitored by badge systems. And now, I can't play games without my voice chat being moderated.
I'm not a racist, sexist, terrible, or bad person. Why do I have to be forced to be surveilled and monitored like this in ever freaking part of my life, and why do you all jump so gleefully into these ecosystems? Why are you so excited to throw away these areas of your life to be monitored and controlled by companies?
I just want a freaking vertical keyboard.
I don't understand why this is so freaking hard to find.
Kinesis had the Free Style 2 keyboard[1] that you had to go out of the way to buy a vertical stand with, and it has been my go to keyboard FOR YEARS now because I just can't find any alternatives.
I used to use the Kinesis Advantage keyboards, but they mess with my carpal tunnel. As cool as they are the plastic placement for the wrist rests still mess with you. It's awful if you have carpal tunnel. And yes, everyone is saying they help, but they're still sources of aggravation because you are wresting your wrists on the plastic and compressing them. And yes, you can get some pads, but that really doesn't change the system.
I just want some g- d- vertical keyboards. And no one makes them with good layouts.
I got this crazy battlestation vertical keyboard from Safe Type [2] and I freaking HATED it because their layout puts a bunch of keys in the middle and there's an insane F-row keyset that requires me to move my hands all over the place. It's ridiculous!
How hard is it to get a vertical keyboard with a good keyboard layout?! I'm so scared my free style 2 is going to fail and I'm going to have to go back to a world with terrible keyboards. I even e-mailed Kinesis asking if they were going to go the same route of vertical keyboards and they refuse to. I'm dying here.
At this point I would love if someone made keyboard gloves that let me put them on and wear them to type so I don't have to compress any nerves, but I doubt that will ever happen. I feel like I'm nuts.
E-ink devices are the best.
I've been using a Boox device lately to read old comics and I LOVE it. https://shop.boox.com/products/novaairc
The thing is that it makes them feel so retro because of the limited colors they can supply, and it still looks great doing it.
My only regret isn't a regret, it's just timing. I purchased the nova air c before the Tab Ultra C had come out. https://shop.boox.com/products/tabultrac
And its form factor is just so much more pleasant.
I can't wait for the coming years of e-ink advancements.
I've played a lot of Spelunky. I mean, I have played A LOT of Spelunky. I consider Derek Yu to be a great designer.
I also think Spelunky classic was the best version of his series on account that the aesthetics and soundtrack were so banger.
That's why I wanted to preface everything before I made this statement. Spelunky 2 is one of the "worst" games I have ever played. I mean this in a very nice way. However, I consider it incredibly disrespectful to the players.
In order to see the "true" ending of the game you have to do an insane number of really esoteric tasks to get to what is called The Cosmic ocean. And, in this Cosmic ocean you then spend 99 levels working in what is arguably arbitrary hell to complete it so that you can finally "beat" game.
What I find so disrespectful about Spelunky 2 is that the experience is frustrating as hell. And, that's intentional. He has designed the game in order to elicit that response, but that doesn't mean that's necessarily a good thing
And in one of his axes he lists broad appeal, however there is no way any person in the general population can even remotely approach the skill level required in order to enjoy this aspect of the game. And, some people might say "get good", or "you need to learn to play the game", but I don't find that to be a sufficient explanation or sympathetic response to those who really do enjoy the game, but are locked out of really interesting parts of it based on tedium that requires incredibly long playthroughs that require incredibly difficult tasks to be achieved in order to see it.
And, I get it as a designer he made the choice that this is how the game should be played, but I cannot really ever get over how the game has changed between Spelunky classic versus Spelunky 1 versus Spelunky 2. And, how much he made a point to enforce that experience through design decisions.
I'd also like to touch on the fact that each following iteration changed from interesting to an art style that felt more like McDonald's art instead of sticking close and cute like the original Sprite art that was created.
I have put so many hours into Spelunky and it's crazy because I would expect to have nice things to say about a game that I spent so much time playing, but for me I really wouldn't suggest Spelunky to anyone because of the design decisions from Derek Yu. In fact, it's my top choice for games that get in the way of themself to the detriment of the player.
So I guess all of this rambling is to articulate that Derek Yu does know some things, and he has been successful, but I don't consider his opinions to be very valid regarding what makes a good game for the general audience.
I love you. Thanks for making the web feel like the web again <3
I'll meet you halfway and say that only people of Polynesian descent can live there.
White people in Hawaii kills me because they're only there due to the great 3 c's of capitalism - colonization, cannibalization, and commodification.
It's a huge bummer what foreign intervention has done that island. Obligatory fudge America.
Cool
