The right wing in the US has spent a lot of money and time co-opting the flag as a signal.

So the right wing overuses flag imagery, and as a result the left starts to view the flag as problematic? That's a Democrat/liberal problem.

To not realize this to me means you either haven't been paying attention, or very much live in a bubble.

I pay attention and don't live in a bubble, and I still think it's absolutely absurd to let the overuse of your countries flag by a specific political group dictate how you feel about seeing said flag.

These days it's much weirder to see an American flag, and usually you know it has something to do with MAGAs. The weird thing to me is how you see one massive one in the luggage retrieval area when you arrive in JFK (in New York). Always makes me sigh

You'd think that on a website that has the word "hacker" in its title, more people would be supportive of someone "hacking" their car, but I guess there's not a lot of car people here.

It's not like the Bank of Americas of the world are going to get an Anthropic or OpenAI API key, and then use the prompt "move this off of COBOL please". They'll either hire a contractor who'll work out how to best utilize AI to migrate the existing codebase off of mainframes, or spin up an internal team to do the same thing.

I've noticed that a lot of my friends switched from text based status updates (Facebook) to image based status updates (Instagram stories). Personally, I got tired of going on Facebook because it was all rage baiting political stuff, and that was all from friends, not even ads.

I see this take on SUVs all the time, and I can't help but think it's wrong. Americans just like bigger vehicles and will downsize if gas gets too expensive. There's a reason almost all electric car companies start off with a CUV/SUV/truck, and it's not because they're allergic to sedans or coupes.

This will work on nerds (aka the HN crowd) but the average person will read that and wonder why they should care when the page loaded. Also, if you keep displaying the banner people will grow accustomed to it and ultimately ignore it.

My guess is that they're angling for an acquisition.

This is what I've thought was going to happen ever since they publicized their efforts. They probably don't have the money to train large models themselves, might as well get a nice chunk of change by being acquired by someone who already has said large models running.

The rich don't really care about insurance rates down here because they can a) pay them, b) tend to gravitate towards newer buildings that have better protection and c) have the money to retrofit older buildings with the necessary protection to lower insurance rates. Miami has the strictest hurricane codes in the country, so while there's a possibility that they may get gutted, it's probably going to be less than people expect.

I agree that the market for local AI is basically limited to nerds at this point, but that's because nobody's really explained why local AI is a good thing and also because the vast majority of people need the $20 paid plan at most. How much time and money would it take to get something half as good as OpenAIs products running locally?

Those rules around special gasoline were made when both federal and California car exhaust regulations were much looser than today, and electric cars were a complete pipe dream. I've seen estimates ranging for savings from $.25 to $1 per gallon if California dropped the requirements.

Interesting that it's designed to connect to a 4 speed transmission. That's incredibly ancient by gas transmission technologies, even heavy duty pickups are on 10 speeds now.

I have a heat pump hot water heater, and it's been awesome. It's ROI has definitely improved with all the energy price spikes. It's located in my garage (I live in Florida) so there's no shortage of hot air for it to use.

The article says that Disney wants to move the current sequels to a brand new timeline which implies that this new timeline is an official timeline in the sense that it's blessed by Disney, but it's not the timeline that most people would consider to be the official timeline, aka the timeline where the original and sequel trilogies happened. It's basically Disney going "Well, we can't ditch this, but it kinda sorta happened, but not in the timeline you think it did. Surprise!".

Meanwhile, anybody with 2 brain cells to rub together is going to look back at how Disney marketed this originally and think "Whatever you say, my guy".

It's one thing to make a bunch of stinkers, but then to pretend that said stinkers were in a completely alternate timeline through some sleight of hand retconning is absolutely bonkers and will fool approximately zero people.

This is exactly it. I feel like I see more posts bitching about Anthropic than OpenAI, yet at the same time it seems like nobody moves away from Anthropic. As long as the strategy works, why bother changing it?

How would they do that? Would it be as easy as telling a model "Hey, review all this code, identify patterns, and then write in this style going forward"?
