I like the 6502 instruction set better. But it does stink to have to chop up your limited address space for I/O.

There are probably 100x more servers sitting in server farms running websites (and burning power) than need to be because companies would rather hire 10 cheap Ruby or PHP programmers than one "expensive" Erlang/Elixer programmer. So there is some harm to bad programmers, even for non-critical websites.

My cat has paws, not hands. And thank God for that, too, otherwise she'd get into too much trouble.

It's not broken. Sometimes real newspapers that hire real reporters and do real reporting charge for their content. Not everything has to be free.

What a great idea! Every monday I take a picture of myself. I think I'll add a photo of my computer desktop and a picture of my physical office space, too. Those will be fascinating 10, 20, 30 years from now. (I'm 53 so I don't know how much further I'd go!)

I do this every year when I go to DEFCON! It's always a good idea to keep an old laptop around for this purpose.

Some of their security-by-obscurity tips I don't think would help much against an FBI or CIA though.

I didn't understand the title because only a Judge and/or Jury can convict people.

The local library doesn't really like donations. Most get tossed. A separate charity takes them, tosses most, and conducts sales to raise money for the library with what's left.

But the fact is, if I'm retaining a copy of the book (with my scan), I can't give the book away. I still have it. That would be stealing. It is really disheartening to see people here on Hacker News who believe that intellectual property should be stolen and/or has no value. That's disturbing.

I do the same thing! If there's a book I want to keep, I scan it with my DIY bookscanner and toss the book away.

I, too, used to dream of having a big home library. Now I dream of a home with almost nothing in it. (If it weren't for music scores, which I use at the piano, there wouldn't be any books in the house other than what I'm currently reading and hasn't been scanned yet.)

I buy used books on Amazon frequently (about 5/month)--when the Kindle version's price is too high or isn't available. It's a great deal and I've rarely been disappointed.

For every additional dollar I earn, I am taxed at a rate (Federal and State combined) of 52.9%. "Rich" people do pay taxes. In fact, they pay most of the taxes.

Of course, the United States contributes to this, too, by having the most complicated tax code, and the highest corporate income tax rate in the world.

Combine this with a 30% ex-patriation tax* (yes, they tax you for giving up your citizenship), it's no wonder people create and keep wealth overseas.

You can't compare traditional GC languages like "Go" to C. They inhabit two different universes.

I update my Erlang based ChicagoBoss / Cowboy web services live all the time, without one transaction being lost.

Erlang lets you update live code, while it's running.

Still, I'm a big fan of Python and Django, and it's nice to see people realizing the value of "live" upgrades, even in a round-about way.

He didn't download the book 10 pages at a time, and he didn't use an image editor to remove the watermarks.

He wrote a script that simulated navigating through the book with a mouse and keyboard and a browser, and generated a bitmap image of every page.

I'm surprised that Obama stuck his nose in this. He really should let "local news" be local. Not everything has to be a federal case.

People have been arrested when burglars stole their computer and claimed to have found "child porn" on it.

4th amendment or not, you'd think that the "rules of evidence" and the word of a burglar would lend credence to the explanation that the burglar planted it to make himself seem more respectable in the eyes of the court.

It's outrageous in this case, as reported by CNN, that the burglars were not arrested. It means you can commit any crime as long as you plant some illegal porn!

I would love it if the publishers and google figured out a proper way to pay to read books that were still under copyright. I'd love to get rid of all my bookshelves knowing that if I wanted access to a particular book I could pay a few dollars and get it.
