Some of the negative comments here exemplify why the mainstream is starting to hate on the "tech elitist" types in the same way FinanceBros were viewed negatively in the '90s and '00s.

I would add differences in domestic consumers preferences. Americans are now addicted to cheap-quality goods. I passed through the gift shop inside Empire Sate Building in NY yesterday and 98% of the gifts are asian imported plastic trinkets branded with Empire State and USA logos. Contrasts that to when I visited the museums in Berlin where the shops mainly focused on selling locally produced crafts.

I too expected more from HN and I think it's because HN is generally more civil than other webs forums. I think the credit of this civility goes to the HN moderators and the enforcement of the policies, not because HN types are special. I used to think technical minded folks are more analytical and thus have less tendency for bias and generalizations but I've concluded that ultimately tech people are still people and subject to the same filters as "normals".
