BBC - London - Contract

The BBC OTG Platform team in London is looking for a Senior Software Engineer with an in-depth experience in audio/video Internet delivery and streaming.

We are looking for someone with excellent software development skills and experience in writing scalable software for the web. For this specific project we are flexible in terms of programming language, but we expect a solid experience in OO static languages as well as in dynamic scripting languages.

Experience with HTTP based video streaming, with a focus on delivery networks, is essential. Experience using caching technologies such as Varnish would be a big plus.

I'm not sure if it's a bug (I'm using Chrome 20 beta, on Lion), but as soon as I've visited the Airtime landing page, my browser behaved automatically, as if I pressed the "Launch Airtime button" and I've instantly received a "Welcome to Airtime" email, even if I didn't accept their request of permissions.

I didn't have a look to the code, but I really hope this is just a bug and not a malicious use of Facebook authentication...

Thanks :) I use the free version of Google Apps with this domain for my email.

The best thing is that I'm de facto using the gmail web app, but if in the future I would like to change provider it will be a smooth transition, since my email address will remain the same.

My surname is Benedetto and unfortunately "benedetto.com" is owned by a funeral services company. However I managed to register "benedet.to", which makes a great personal domain!

My only fear in owning an extremely personalized domain is that if for any reason I fail to renew the domain, some squatter could get it and do whatever he wants (it happened with my previous blog: someone picked up the domain and used it for a porn website. It took months to take down every link that still referred it as my personal blog).

If he doesn't explicitly state a licence, the default copyright is owned by the author. Open source licences exist for this reason, to change the "default behavior" of something that is publicly released.

For this reason Kwerty owns the rights of distributing and using his code even without a licence.

Steve Jobs would have said: "Android update will replace credit cards". And that's the difference between Google and Apple today.

I really like the design, and the service also is very useful. I would just make more evident which is the most used expression...the two results are too similar! I'm from Italy too, and I think I'll start using it (it was already useful for my comment ;) )

Some random comments:

1) I don't get the idea. Do you mean something like an automatic check-in based on your current location?

2) This is already partially covered by Twitter: just twit "Who wants to meet in 5 minutes in..."? I don't see the need of an added service. Sure, you could add all the features you can think of, like maps. But now twits can be geolocalized too.

3) I like this idea. The only problem is that a system like Aardvark could work mainly for big companies with a large customer support department. Such companies could be difficult to convince to try the new system for their support.

4) Last.fm already does that. Edit: I've seen only now your comment. Well, I prefer the Last.fm model...what is the logic behind an invite only service? If we have in common many favorite artists, it's probable that I will like also some other artists from its collection.

5) I don't own an iPad and I can't judge the usability of its keyboard...but I don't see many people programming on that thing. It's more a consumer, rather than producer type of product. However, I believe there will be hundreds of geeks ready to install it on their iPad, even if they won't use it much.

I don't really like approaches like this one. It's the technology that should be adapted to humans, not the contrary.

This software tries to solve a real life problem, that I feel everyday more important to me. Their intuition is right: the problem can be (partially) solved with good presentation of data. But why using only Firefox as a platform? They almost had me, but I'm using Chrome and I really don't want to install another browser just to use as a platform for another software.
