What the heck is a Growth Hacker, really?

I don’t get how anyone thinks that spending 100s of hours over and over again on projects that make $0 is a good idea. “Definition of insanity” and all that. You are in denial that you are unemployed, you might as well do something more interesting or enjoyable.

The industry seems so divided on AI right now.

We have interviews where we aren't allowing the use of it (yet interviewees are using stealth AIs to cheat). At the same time, I am also hearing of organizations mandating the use of it, ie: "20% of the code committed needs to be generated". There's probably a set of orgs that exist that do not allow the use of AI in coding interviews, yet practically mandate the use of AI in day-to-day work!

We are at an inflection point I think, but my guess is AI is going to win out soon enough.

Not many people are going to totally ignore their opportunity costs to join as a "founder-ish" engineer at a startup.

I have taken a role like this before, but when I did so, I was making a lateral move from a compensation standpoint. This is without factoring in any expected value of equity (because there was none).

"Here’s a particularly bleak statistic: a 2021 report showed that almost half of all entrepreneurs earn less than $30,000 a year. That’s less than the average kindergarten teacher—except kindergarten teachers don’t have to explain to their spouses why they spent $10,000 on a logo redesign."

I would love for the author to cite their sources on this but I do find it vibes with my experience.

In the tech world, it's not uncommon for founders to attract enough investment to at least pay themselves something before they have any revenue. But in lot of lines of business you can work very hard shouldering massive responsibilities, and take home almost nothing.

Conversely:

“Just because you look the part, doesn’t mean you can play, ask Manute Bol.” - Sage Francis

I'm not sure Manute is actually a great example but it's still a good line.

When I was playing sports back 25 years ago, I heard the expression "looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane" more than once.

I wonder if their product people get their ideas from Hacker News. Just the other day, a top thread comment was about an idea for a social network where you would receive tons of engagement from bots. Coincidentally (or not), Meta actually took a first step in that direction days later.

God forbid you used this now a days, other developers may get mad at you.

Tiny anecdote: I worked on the campus of a children's hospital. The pharma reps had parking right by the main entrance. The parents of sick children? Expensive, paid parking a mile away.

I was thinking about a Twitter clone where your account goes through an approval process where you provide a short essay and your Hacker News username. Client has no tracking, and uses no JavaScript.
