I just started using Planetscale for small projects here and there. More and more of my projects are FE-heavy and don't require a big dedicated database (NextJS apps, mostly hardcoded designs or headless CMS like Sanity). There are times where I need to store just small bits of data, maybe contact form submissions or something. It's been super great to be able to quickly hook up planetscale to a nextjs api function and have that data persisted within a matter of minutes.

I've yet to use it on anything large-scale, though, so I can't speak to performance when you're really pushing it.

I've always just leveraged existing connections. I'm not great at selling myself, but I've done a lot of good work for a handful of people that ARE good at talking me up. Reach out to people that you've done good work for and let them know that you are looking for some side gigs. You might not get anything right away, but things could start trickling in. This has opened up a lot of opportunities for me.

Don't accidentally commit `node_modules` - that'd be a costly mistake!

There’s not much to the article right now (developing story), but how big of a blow is this to Amazon? And how big of a boon to Microsoft? I realize that this is likely because of the people that I surround myself with, but I don’t know anybody who actually uses Azure. Is Azure’s core business large corporations/government?

The Data Engineer is responsible for building out and managing our Apache & DataStax Cassandra and Solr clusters as a replacement for our existing MySQL databases. I know that this doesn't make use of Sublime, but you could give Cloud9 a shot. I've used it for pair programming and it's actually pretty nice on that front, especially if you're just helping beginners understand things because you end up sharing the entire environment, not just your IDE.

I was getting super nostalgic reading it, but when I started scrolling through these screenshots... my god, the memories just came flooding back. They all have a distinctly "warez" look, even though they are wildly different from one another.

This brings back so many memories... this is where I really started my "programming" with Visual Basic 4, hunting the web for .bas files that I could load into my own VB project to create 1337 rainbow text in my IMs, punting users, trying to work around the rate limiting that they added to chatrooms... it's incredible that the AOL warez scene is essential the catalyst for my now successful career in technology 20+ years later.

I used this for a huge project with a lot of states. Separated my workflow out into individual files for each class so they could just be included at the top. Then for each transition method, I created a service object (Interactor gem[1]) to handle all of my complicated transition logic, so the object-level transition methods would just check for a success or failure and perform the transition appropriately. Really love how it turned out.

For anyone else working in ruby, I've grown to love the "Workflow" gem[1] for my state machines. It really helps to streamline things, and also has a built-in way to generate a visual of your class's states and transitions.

I know that there is racial profiling going on, and travel to certain countries will have higher numbers of individuals with certain ethnic backgrounds, but how often is this happening to middle-class white Americans? I used to travel a great deal but haven't done much over the past 5 years.

I remember being questioned for about 15 minutes on my flight from the UK to Paris back around 2008. My trip from the US to Turkey from 2013 was pretty timid, maybe 2 minutes of questions and a mandatory body scan (stopover in Amsterdam). From the US to South Africa completely painless. I did get my hands swabbed for explosive residue on a trip from Detroit to Las Vegas a couple years ago.

I'm just curious if anyone here has personal experience as a middle class white individual getting treatment as harsh as I read in some of these articles.

There's https://fastlane.tools, but I haven't looked into it a ton. It seems to require a big investment to get things rolling, but probably solves a lot of these problems after that. I'll have to revisit it at some point...

My company manages just a couple apps for iOS. They aren't updated too frequently, maybe 3ish times per year. Few things fill me with dread more than trying to release a new iOS app after a certificate has expired. As others have mentioned, the process around provisioning profiles, certificates, managing them within Xcode, etc, is extremely complicated, and the 2-5 day review period makes things even more stressful because there's no easy way to just upload a fix when something goes wrong (like device tokens suddenly stop generating in production). Since we push updates so infrequently, every other push requires updated certificates and the large time gaps make it easy to forget how much of a pain it is until you're trying to do it.

Some things that I am thankful for:

- TestFlight. It's a pain that I have to have the app approved before I can send the beta out to my internal users. Seems like internal should let internal users update to a beta version without review (while external would still require a review). At least it lets us test with our production certificates eventually. It's still a pain if something is discovered and it requires a rebuild and a new review.

- Emergency Review Requests. I've had to submit 3 of these over the past several years, and Apple has always initiated my within 2 hours. I really appreciate this, and I'm glad that people haven't abused it so much that they've scrapped it.

I thought that the production of the competition was extraordinary. Seeing everything lit up on stage was straight out of a movie (in a good way). I thought that the event itself at Defcon was super weird, though. A lot of people, myself included, assumed that the event was going to be more real-time. In reality, the servers had been competing for hours already.

That being said, huge props to these amazing teams. It was so fascinating to see how each system reacted to the same situations and then either hunkered down to protect itself or go on the offensive. Really amazing stuff.

Long-time rails guy here, really looking forward to playing around with Phoenix soon. I keep hearing really positive things, just haven't had the time dive in. I tried diving into react for a bit, but I found that it was really hard to retain unless I was working with it every day. Lots of people are telling me that the switch from Rails to Phoenix will be a lot easier though (I hope so!)

Sadly it doesn't seem to go back further than April 2016 :(

Do many people use Yammer? The company that I'm with tried it a few years back and it just wasn't useful for us. I wonder if they will end up merging Yammer, or at least some Yammer features, into LinkedIn at some point.

While I agree with you on all of those points, I think that there's still something to be said about usability and quicker innovation for managing/reviewing your finances. I personally use Vanguard and love them, but their site was really really difficult for me to use when I joined, and it's still not great after a big refresh. For those who are serious about getting the lowest possible fees and the maximum return, usability might not be a big deal. A lot of people are really drawn by shiny things, though, and shiny is not something that larger financial institutions have ever been good at.

I don't think that this really counters any of your points, only justifies why I think some people might want to use services like Wealthfront and Betterment.

The whole "enter your banking credentials" thing is definitely a bit weird, but I understand why they do it.

A slightly different use-case, but does anyone know of a good service that replaces the need for nightly ACH batch processing that works with good old fashion routing number and account number (and maybe some other details OTHER than banking credentials)?
