Humans can be so different, it's fascinating and awesome. I'm quite the opposite. Where I wanted to talk to people from around the world and have some interesting conversations about everything, the fact that they are mostly "Hello, I'm calling from x, using radio y, and your signal is z. 73" is a big let down for me. I somewhat like the technical sid of it, but just calling to say "Hello, x, y, z, bye." ends up feeling like a waste of time to me (in the sense that I could be using this time for other, more interesting things. I still find it somewhat interesting though). But, if you enjoy the technical aspect of it, then I think it's fine, you can focus more on cw, or the digital modes where the contacts are automated.

edit: I know there are ragchews all the time, but it's still mostly about equipment.

I don't hate on Google, but the user highlighted some feature on Google Maps that are not desirable, and clearly knows more about map apps than me, so why not ask him what he uses? Google provides great value, I agree, but sometimes there's better stuff out there.

What do you use instead of Google Maps? I don't know enough about alternatives to choose one.

Brazilian here. I'm 100% for combating and arresting illegal miners, loggers and farmers, but I also know how big the rainforest is, how long the borders are, and how little personnel there is to do the work. Most people don't have a sense of how vast that region is: the brazilian part of the Amazon rainforest is about half the area of the U.S. Now look up how many soldiers and federal police officers are working there. It's daunting, feels like the drug war, only fifty times worse, because there's no solution anywhere close to something like legalization.

I resonate with what he says because, like the author mentions later on, I also have many friends who went deep into the psychedelics journey while claiming it was 'freeing their minds', 'enlightening' them, or whatever other concept they liked to use, only to end up, a decade or two later, in either a regular struggling life like so many others, or a downright bad place. I'm probably wrong to generalize, as I'm sure it can help many, but the drugs still can't substitute the individual's effort and struggle to grow, and overcome, and the learning of how to live a meaningful life.

I know what you mean. A lot of people in my country just say 'fuck it' to property rights and steal shit by threat of violence. A lot of people here also say 'fuck it' to human rights and it's even wilder the crazy stuff they do. And then those 'asshole' hackers come here and defend these rights. Oh, the audacity.

I had the same thought. The gothic church one, for example. I have to agree here. I'm all for different architectural styles, so they can embody the local environment, culture, history. Yet that style is the embodiment of an idea more than anything. I know it is linked to a zeitgeist of somewhere in the not distant past, and to ideas of funcionalism, maybe minimalism etc but I fail to see local/regional culture there. I fail to see any interaction with nature there. Looking at it... oh man, does it look hideous to me. Maybe it's because I lived for many years in Brasília, the most car centric city I've ever been to, the butt of many jokes to people who went to live there. "The city with no street corners." Also no sidewalks, a city where blocks have names such as "Entertainment Sector South", "Hotel Sector North", etc. Ugh...

Taut Line Hitch is a little different from Midshipman's Hitch. Midshipman's grips a little better and is recommended. However, Like the other reply to your answer, for me the best of them is the Adjustable Grip Hitch. I teach knots to boy scouts, and know lots of them. After using the Adjustable, I don't use the Taut Line or Midshipman's anymore.

During wet season its widest point can reach 30 miles. This means that if you're on a boat in the middle of the river, you can't see nothing but water in any direction. To cross it on foot, over some imaginary bridge, would take you over 8 hours.

If the mother doesn't drink/smoke, has normal sleep, and the baby is healthy, it's not considered dangerous and was practiced by all of humankind for most of its past. Separate rooms and separate beds are a very, very recent invention. For most of humankind's history mothers slept with their babies.

What countries, you ask?? Try being an immigrant from a poor South American/African country and then try the traditional methods wiring money to your rural family who stayed behind. I despise the crypto hype, but sending money via cryptocurrencies is A LOT easier for the poorest people, since cellphones are so widespread now. I know plenty, plenty of poor people in my country who don't have bank accounts but have smartphones. If crypto payments were more widely accepted, a lot of them wouldn't come close to touching a bank.

No, São Paulo doesn't have more cars than people. I don't know where the parent got their data. I'll stand corrected if shown data supporting it, but the numbers I found were more like 7 cars for ever 10 inhabitants, and I don't even know if children taken into account. I lived in São Paulo for many years, and I sold my car before I moved there. Living downtown, one is better off without one. However, more cars than inhabitants seems and exaggeration.

Edit: Did some quick checking. According to the national institute of statistics, São Paulo's fleet is about 8.8 million (this includes over 1 million motorcycles, plus all the busses, tractors, trucks, etc. Regular cars are 6 million). Population is 12.3 million.

I've used and researched a lot of portable wood stoves. If you want a portable rocket stove, the one I would recommend is the Virestove. There are some video reviews on youtube that you can check out before buying it. I haven't used a more practical one yet. If you have the funds, they have it in titanium right now. Should be quite lighter than the stainless version. The mini version is more portable of course, but doesn't achieve the smokeless combustion that the larger version does. I guess it's the length of the chimney, but not sure.

For a flat pack grill that's practical and portable, I'd recommend you check out the ones made by UCO. They come in three sizes as of now. The only downside I find with flat pack style grills is that on most of them you have to raise the grill to add wood.

Somebody recommended the Firebox line. They're pretty awesome, but are regular wood stoves. They will smoke just like any fire pit or flat pack grill. No rocket smokeless combustion. The stainless version is very well built and will last forever. Haven't tried the titanium version, but seem to be well like by users. I'd also recommend the Bushbox, by Bushcraft Essentials. These towo are the best of the folding style portable wood stoves (not rocket style).

I have to say though that I've been using wood stoves to cook less and less, mostly because of health concerns. It seems every year I find more and more reasons not to be around them.

With streets crowded with scooters during rush hour I think we'd have a lot more minor accidents/injuries, but far, far fewer deaths, right? What could be done to avoid the minor accidents?

Female genital mutilation is common practice in some countries. Let's analyze and study the reasons for this practice that started centuries ago before we can say anything about it. I mean, hey, they burned people at crosses for a long time, they must have had a valid reason too, right? No, not every reason behind a custom is a valid one in the 21st century. If the parable villagers were nervous and twitchy because they feared demons would send the tiger, and they figured out that by sacrificing a baby would please the demons, nobody today should say that throwing a small child off a cliff is still an ethical custom. Of course, changing the custom is another thing, but we today have something called human values, ethical values, and human rights. They do trump a few ethical values that we have carried from the past. I'm not denying others' humanity because I say this, but when you come to a conclusion that an action is not as ethical as another, you should adopt it, and explain why you did it. There's no shame in stating that slavery is wrong, that genital mutilation is wrong, that child labor is wrong. No, in my latin american country it really is the men who need much more civilizing. I'm done with feeling guilt or fear of being called euro-centric or colonialist, especially when my country ranks fifth in violent homicides against women, in the world (source: UN's ACNUDH). The other countries? Three of them are also in South America (Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala). In Brazil a woman is murdered every 6 hours, 81% of the time by their partners or ex-partners. I won't even list the number of rape cases each year. I have a daughter and I have a wife, and I have two sisters, and I grew up here, I know my own culture, I talk to other men every single day. If you live in Europe or the US, they don't view women the same way you do. And yes, Europe's views on women and on equality is objectively better than ours. Ask 1,000 women here. Ask 10,000. Cultures are not all equal, not equally 'good'. Some aspects of my culture I love. Others, not so much. That's how it is, actually, not some 'every aspect of every culture has equal merit and should never be criticized' fairy tale. I'm very sorry for the readers for sounding so harsh, I really am. But, like I said, I have a daughter and a wife. My wife is scared or at least on high alert any time she is alone. Is that how chickens are raised in big farms here in Brazil too? It's funny how I hear some people say they'll never eat lab meat and it will never taste as good as meat from an animal, and then they sit there drinking their Coke or their Pepsi because they don't like fruit juice.
