The trick is to take it at face value and not question how they know, but what the answer has to be assuming they do know.

This is the commitment and consistency effect.

The extreme cases can be found in cults where followers cling tighter to their beliefs once exposed.

A great example are the followers of Harold Camping, the Christian radio broadcaster who predicted the end of the world a few years ago, and kept re-predicting when it never came.

This is about Priorities–

I suggest you spend a few minutes and do a deep session of introspection and meditate on what your true priorities are.

It's not nearly as easy as it sounds...

Here are some questions to get you rolling: Why are you working so much? For you? For someone else? For the money? If so, why? What will you do with that money? Is it for you? A family? Do you find yourself enjoying your girlfriend more than your work? What do you get out of your relationship? Why are you with this person? Why are you working on your specific project?

The idea is to discover what you truly value and align your priorities with that– Good luck!

I strongly disagree with this advice.

There is no faster way to suck the emotion out of a relationship than to put a schedule at the center of it, and hiding behind the excuse of the schedule is just deferring responsibility.

I do agree that we(humans from other countries) should all just dump resources on the people there -

but I think the legitimate concern here is that while we squabble about resources and their cost, the virus spreads and mutates - and if it makes the jump to airborne, I think it will make the average Joe Smith pretty vulnerable.

I think the author does this, not for his validation, but to cement the connections in the mind of the Western readers who are raised with a strong basis in science and logic.

Having read many of Alan Watts' books, I will have to disagree with this recommendation - while 'The Book' is a short read, I don't think it's a good introduction to his work.

I suggest delving into Watts with his 'Out of your Mind' audiobooks recorded from his class lectures.

As a huge car enthusiast, I'll chime in here and say that I really like the idea of this and the direction you're taking it in.

A couple things that concern me:

What was the reasoning behind the Daytona coupe over the Cobra roadster body?

Why use a real CSX chassis when you could drive costs down with a high-quality reproduction chassis such as a Superformance?

Additional thoughts:

I image a "drop-in" electric solution that fits a standard 289 mounts/bay would be very popular among the kit guys, and would open you up to the millions of cars fitted with these engines(all mustangs until 1995, mercuries, thunderbirds, alpines, etc)

I live in silicon valley, where can I see/drive one?

This depends on the person entirely because you can challenge yourself and push the boundaries in either one.

If your friend enjoys visual feedback/things then it would follow that they would probably enjoy front-end work better, however if they enjoy problem solving and tend to be more logical in their thought process, the back-end may be a better fit.

This is brilliant, and a smart move for the WP, despite some of the criticism's below. I think it's a much needed, if romantic, idea that harkens back to the transparency of Wikileaks, and gives WP a great little heads up over some of the other papers. I wouldn't be surprised to watch the others follow suit soon.

I wouldn't say this is necessarily a bad thing, but more like the effects of market correction as our entire workforce transitions to a higher level putting pressure on people to operate at a higher cognitive level. And, I think we would want as much of our population as possible in cognitively demanding positions, and having the ability to outsource labor to other countries helps that happen. Now the next question I see is- 'Is our education system ready for that?' and I don't know a lot about the inner workings of it, but my gut feeling says we're not there yet.

This is a great idea. Similar to mholt's comment, I think it needs a foothold in the sf bay area to really take off.

I don't think it's possible right now for us to predict how the world would change if there were no mosquitos. I expect they play some important role that we don't yet understand. Bees come to mind

This post makes me sad, but reminds me just how big of a technical gap there is between the valley, the early adopters across the country, the rest of the population in the middle, and then the older/lagging adopter generations at the tail. (I'm picturing a normal bell distribution here).

A lot of companies are creating solutions to problems the majority of people don't have yet, and I think the gap is widening.

Bear in mind it wasn't long ago that nobody had any idea who Paypal was...
