even before that, by some accounts I hear the reason VCs over invested in dot com was primarily because they saw something that could not easily usurped by Microsoft by releasing their own sh*tty copy. so they all piled in and then bubble dynamics took over.

story as old as internet itself!

problem with solar is that in itself it is great, but here in US if you look at the cost per watt produced it is heavily inflated with permitting and marketing costs. which is basically their margins till it becomes barely profitable to you. otherwise most of solar system cost has been fallen quite a bit for last decade plus.

dont believe me, look up how much a open loop DIY system costs.

I am seriously thinking about adapting Kate with a fully opensource ai harness. it should be good enough for mac and linux for most devs. it already supports lsp server & has a established plugin infra so it should not really be any blockers. anybody wanna collab?

this class of spyware pretending to be ide makes me sick.

I actually think Chinese models have already popped the bubble, we just dont see it yet. the only way to justify AI IPO market cap is basically if they get to hold most sw industry code hostage and then token-flate budgets to collect AI tax. short of that AI expense would very quickly mean revert to model + some margin. this means the moat for AI 'trillion club' is gone. In fact AI virtually guarantees that there is no execution-moat left anywhere, definitely not in code or that engineer with knowledge about that obscure mechanism. without the moat most of the sw ecossytem's margins would shrink (as they should).

Ironically enough the only moat left would be what you can buy from Washington.

this is the reason I refuse to budge from my index portfolio besides small 'play money' ventures. My investing philosophy is basically by the time it hits wire you dont know what portion of it factored in. especially in age of AI and automation IMO alpha will vanish faster as anyone can code up eqv of a bloomberg terminal themselves. So all thats left is how do you manage downturns, when market heads down 30% but your handpicked stocks go down 60% you need to have enough wherewithal to hold through bad times. this is where true test of faith comes, I believe I would be cowardly and sell out at wrong time. So its best to just hold index and market sort the bloodbath out itself.

SSS works pretty well. IIRC somebody in bitcoin community started using this for storing private keys using 3/5 schema. they basically divide the secret keys into 5 parts out of which you only need 3 to recover original private key. IDK if there are any hardware wallets that actually support it yet though.

We need a 'Framework (as in laptop maker) for physical devices'. Basically most of this physical tech can be relatively easily recreated with current tech and 3D printing. In fact probably better done with electric motors and batteries. There is definitly a moat there to be disrupted.

GitHub Stacked PRs 3 months ago

what happened to the old gerrit reviews, I loved its handling on incremental patchsets. github is primitive by comparison.

the biggest red flag I see is this: https://youtu.be/iOyFja87uyw?si=5INnIG1kZI0AbCGa

tldr: they are trying hard to change S&P500 inclusion rules so that they dont have to wait 12months after going public so they can list mega-ipo asap in force index funds to buy a portion (presumably before revenue exponential growth settles and profits start tanking due to opensource catching up). They know something that we dont.

btw if they are public and part of S&P500 then potentially they'll be a candidate for a bailout.

you are missing a but 'given a choice' disclaimer. Meta is pretty much a monopoly in social space. So is Android. given a choice people will absolutely gravitate towards not-always-snooping device. most people with resources anyway, who matter for the AI adoption.

Oh an wait till ad companies start selling your healthcare data and you will see how fast things turn 'given a choice'.

why? its all private money funding AI at the moment, sure some data centre reality companies would go belly up but you will be surprised to find out how much of it is big headlines and very little action. there is a lot of installations and GPUs not yet brought online but marked as sold because of .. well physical world delays.

Let me put it this way, IF AI is a bubble then I'd like it to go bust asap instead of dragging along and going public and then us discovering BS/creative accounting revenue in S1 filings. by then it would be much worse. Right now VCs and PE firms will absorb it all.

The thing with dot-com was that there was actual public market corruption & euphoria. that caused the bust painful for everybody. RN its bigtech & PE how has heavy cash reserver and margins to bun through. I'd much rather have them take it then average 401k.

I have a less charitable and more direct answer. Right now there is a notion in Left that Israeli are the oppressor. In Iran large majority of population is Persian but MINO (Muslim in name only due to dictatorship). They are struggling to get freedom from the Islamic regime and getting some help from Israel. This flips the narrative in Left's mind (if they accept it) that Muslims can be oppressors too and that is untenable for them. especially because Left in Western nations has basically aligned themselves with muslims so its easier for them to just ignore it.

BTW its not just left here, I originally hail from India and you can feel the pin-drop silence from left on Iran there too. They just hope the rebellion gets crushed by regime like other ones and they'll pretend status quo.

My TLDR takeaway: Muslims only care about when they are oppressed & Left is completely aligned with them right now.

thats a strawman, its not like advertisement & brainwashing people is the only way to make money in tech. I am old enough to have seen how valley was before this big-tech ad garbage showed up. In fact I'd say all this power with 7 or so big tech is hindering innovation, so, IMnsHO Fuck 'em all.

Asking 300M people to leave country and move to europe instead of fixing problems here is just stupid and at best a shoddy attempt at victim blaming.

I'll paste my abridged response to the 'datacenters in space' post:

... It then occurred to me that they (all major AI companies) know all of these facts (uneconomical costs) but still pushing for it so there must be another reason. Then I recalled the offhand statement from the openAI lady about govt backstop for infra, which was strongly opposed by public and AI czar. this might be be a backdoor way of injecting that backstop capital in terms of subsidies now for results in 5 years or so. and needless to say after pilot programs those will fail spectacularly.

this does not makes sense from dollars pov to me, I ran a back of napkin session with claude & gemini on this and the short of it is you need a magical weightless radiator for cooling and even then it wont work because the launch costs need to be sub $100 before this can be feasible. this does not even factors the 5y amortization and LEO orbit drag correction.

Did you miss the last sentence or had your mind made up already by then?

the reason I don't want a typical union is because they work out well where there is a clear separation of labor & capital. labor get paid wages & capital makes money off the invested assets. problem with tech is that in a tech ventures labor is a part owner and capital too (engineer equity). introducing a 3rd party (unions & union leadership) in these situations will likely have the worst effect on the capital portion of labor & possibly eroding the incentives altogether. Imagine having a set of union rules to follow when distributing equity to early stage engineers? how do you decide equitable when by definition you are on cutting edge of tech & innovation. & if you think that wont happen you are mistaken, that is where the biggest pie is and unions arent exactly 'shining beacon of honesty and integrity' either. Look all I want is just some basic labor laws are followed and tech employees dont feel the panic when they hear slack-chime on a weekend night.

there are other mechanisms like state level enforcement of labor laws and punitive fines. you know the good old law enforcement. its really not so hard if you actually want to do it.

As a non gaming engineer, I dont want a union, what I really want is solid (really, harsh) enforcement of basic common sense labor rules for exempt workers like weekly working hour limits, no after hours scheduling or minimum notice/severance period for layoffs & many other abuses. Problem is tech industry does not wants to give an inch and workers don't complain because of higher pay and 'lottery ticket' effect.

I fear the time for fixing this is passing fast. Its because within a decade AI will have enough of labor displacement that labor wont have any negotiating leverage against capital. If this happens with union, so be it.
