A "bodkin," an archaic word for a small knife or sharp implement, is probably a diminutive of "bod" or dagger. A "jerkin" or a tight vest, might be a diminutive of the Dutch "jerk," (dress), but all of these words are so old it's hard to nail down their etymology. As other commenters pointed out, today's diminutive suffix is -y/-ey, used mostly for childhood nicknames and baby-talk names like horsey.

I'm sure that has a lot to do with the close physical proximity of the capitals of Argentina and Uruguay.

Let's say you're a well-to-do citizen of Pakistan. There are only 11 countries you can travel to without going through visa bureaucracy (and they're not a whos-who of global commerce, either). You park a little bit of your wealth into an investment in one of these countries and now you can freely travel the world without hassle.

If you don't have the right to hold up a sign saying whatever you want on land that you own, it's a serious limitation on your free speech. So while I think it's reasonable to place safety and aesthetic restrictions on advertising, it's worth balancing those restrictions against free speech ideals.

The 1857 Utah War 4 years ago

Porter Rockwell was dubbed the "Destroying Angel," but he was definitely a bona fide law man. But you're right that there is some evidence that he was also kind of the frontier version of a James Bond type secret service or special forces operative with a license to kill. And his boss was Brigham Young, who was a bit drunk on power. Mountain Meadows is absolutely a disgrace and a scandal that should (and does) taint the reputations of Young and other Mormon leaders of the time, but it's more understandable once you consider the greater context of the Utah war. The Utahns were paranoid and on high alert. And Brigham Young in particular was concerned about being deposed and jailed, so he had an interest in keeping people whipped up.

One way to protect against inflation is to take out a huge mortgage on a house. Interest rates are low right now, and if inflation is high, the mortgage balance will be eroded away by inflation.

I learned Spanish immersed in the street life of working-class Venezuelans in the 1990s. Ultimately, my command of the language was good enough that native Venezuelans detected an accent, but assumed I was from a different, unfamiliar part of Latin America. When I tried to speak Spanish in Barcelona years later, folks really got a kick out of my accent and idiomatic expressions.

I picked up a hitchhiker in Denmark once that had been an exchange student in New York. He spoke English with the most delightful Brooklyn accent. Just enough Bugs Bunny to be hilarious coming from a Dane.

I have a very cool ring made of tungsten carbide and carbon fiber. But I stopped wearing it precisely because of hearing stories like this.
