I do believe that "success" is entirely subjective. For some people getting a full time job in the local factory is a huge achievement and the stability of that income does wonders for a family unit.

For others nothing short of passing university with a first and jetting off to a glittering career is called success.

For this reason I never judge anyone anymore. The human condition means they are probably doing their absolute best to get by!

And when you consider the type of owner (Who gives a toss they are only students landlord) are they ever going to upgrade to a normal system let alone nest.

When you think about it this product is so badly thought out on every level!

I'd love to see these British houses with "No thermostat and you can't control anything".

Every house i've ever lived in has has not just a main thermostat but most have thermostatic vales on the radiators too!

I'm 31 now and have lived in lots of houses both brand new and old victorian. They do realise it's customary to modernise older houses after a while don't they? Maybe not!

The basic upshot of this story is to keep your contact with the Police brief, friendly and say no more than you need to.

The Police have been doing this to black people, gay people and other minorities for years, it's actually quite ironic that the Stonewall riots happened in San Fran too.

All that's happened this time is a well off, straight, white chap has realised just how hard life gets when you're treated as a minority.

I hope he gets his day in court and if the story is true they will sort the copper out and pay some compensation to him.

Have you ever tried just cutting down? Even just a little bit? I don't believe in this "Just stop and never drink again" rubbish I think it has to be done in baby steps.

Anyway, hope you're okay and whatever you do don't go the religion route. It's a dangerous path to tread especially with the types who run these things.

+1 on this. Religion can take you down some dangerous paths too. Stick to scientific and medical methods.

Like has been said it's easy to get to and worth the trip if you're into the history of computer science.

I went a year ago and it was very inspirational and the perfect antidote to startup BS and all that NSA stuff. Around the time i went i was reading a book about the history of cryptography and it was great linking everything together!

It's just a shame Alan was treated the way he was although the letter from Gordon Brown PM in the main museum is definitely worth a look for any LGBT history guru!

As a mature student all I ever hear about is that no one will hire a student with no experience? So you get students doing unpaid internships, part time jobs and basically anything to show on their CV.

I've come to the solution that it's all a load of rubbish. Build a network, become a face within your little niche and make sure your knowledge / experience is always moving upwards.

Too many youngsters think that getting a 1st == instant £60,000+ a year job. Too many older people think working 20 years doing the same thing again and again == instant £60,000+ a year job.

Neither is true, a career takes time to build, pruning your network and stacking the cards in your favour.

Point 1 == Nail hit firmly on head! I'm 31 and far more streetwise than I was 10/15 years ago. Youngsters tend to get excited quickly and you can make them do all sorts of cool things, working for free, no contracts, perpetual internships etc etc.

It seems everyone these days is a "founder" of something. I own sites that do things these youngsters can't do (Turn a profit) but I've never, not for one moment ever thought I was a founder of something great, just trying to earn a living!

I agree with the companies that believe in profit thing. Once you strip out the happy clappy, social crud employers just want people who can help them turn a profit.

She was certainly the first Computer Scientist, well that's what I was told in uni!

This would be akin to dumping a load of cash into the economy, driving inflation to the point where the extra cash had absolutely no difference to anyone especially the poor.

It's a lovely idea but the working wage is a much better one!

That's a very naive viewpoint from someone who doesn't work in industry.

I think it's probably best to split the job search into two bits.

a) The bit where some recruiter is looking through CV's. b) The bit when you talk to the gaffer.

I agree with the 'drop everything off a cv' line. Most recruiters have at best a basic understanding of IT buzzwords and next to no IQ. Keep it simple, sell yourself as the answer to the problem and save the interesting chat about what you did in 1987 for more important people.

Tech is such a rabbit hole anyway no one person can learn everything and the internet can be a curse throwing constant suggestions of the stuff you 'need' to learn!

Some times in work i feel inferior to my buddies until someone asks a question about something close to my heart.

A detailed explanation later which no one within 100 miles could give and it hits you, we're all excellent at something no matter how bad your impostor syndrome gets!

Please go back to reading Cheeseburger or (Insert 'geek' blog here). In the real world developers travel for their work, often visiting places with down right frightening laws! (Dubai, Saudi, Africa; You get the picture)

I'd imagine this story is of high importance to any developer (Even non Christian ones) as it highlights just how careful you need to be when traversing that neck of the woods.

Ughh, all these buzz words and everyone seems to have a different view on what they mean!

I thought 'full stack' was a developer who could turn their hand to any aspects of the project?

Another term I hate is 'growth hacking' - why does everything need a fancy new name?
