This is just another manifestation of software eating the world. What makes Google competitive in any industry? Its talent in software.

This might be easily overlooked: optional has been introduced (back-ported?) to Objective-C in the form of nullability annotation!

The Last Question 13 years ago

I actually consider pointing out the scientific elements of a SF piece is the best kind of compliment.

The Last Question 13 years ago

The story boils down to:

1. Is the second law of thermodynamic wrong? 2. Does P equals NP (or, if 1 is true, then how and how long will it take to solve it?) 3. What's God?

These were the seven demands drafted by the students in Beijing (from Wikipedia):

1. Affirm as correct Hu Yaobang's views on democracy and freedom; 2. Admit that the campaigns against spiritual pollution and bourgeois liberalization had been wrong; 3. Publish information on the income of state leaders and their family members; 4. End the ban on privately run newspapers and stop press censorship; 5. Increase funding for education and raise intellectuals' pay; 6. End restrictions on demonstrations in Beijing 7. Provide objective coverage of students in official media.

A folder in Dropbox, containing each idea as either a text file or a folder of its own.

Sometimes the whole idea is one line as the file name. The content of the text file is the details of the idea. If I wrote some script or collected some information for this idea, it'll be in its folder.

Apple is the biggest player in the mobile market, they aren't using Intel chips in iPads or iPhone/iPod Touchs. Kindle Fires have TI chips in them. The best selling Android smartphones from Samsung/HTC/Motorola all use ARM chips. Only of late, a couple of small mobile manufacturers announced that they are releasing Intel-based devices along side of their ARM devices.

I don't see what market Intel owns.

Acquiring Intel doesn't mean replacing it's business operation. What if Apple kept Intel running as is, but merely use their designing and manufacturing ability to get better chip for their hardware?

> “if Apple gives up its position” which it clearly hasn’t.

so, moot?

> Amazon is copying Apple’s playbook, page-by-page...

> What, after all, has Amazon (or Microsoft) actually invented here? Nothing. They’ve emulated Apple at a lower price point and to some extent disintermediated the mobile carriers.

Not according to Jeff Bezos, who spend a good portion of his presentation explaining how Amazon make money with their pricing strategy of the Kindles. The difference between iPad and Fire HD is not in price, but in their producers' business models.

The author clearly doesn't get it.

Several hundred years ago, nobody understands acceleration. Several decades ago, nobody understands the theory of relativity. Today, nobody understands the Standard Model.

And they all submit to religion!
