When I went through infantry training at Ft Benning I learned that the term "infantry" referred to a nation's ability to field soldiers, which is dependent upon the birth rate.

More infants = more soldiers.

Thus, by extrapolation, soldiers, especially infantrymen, are considered to be expendable.

Sadly, bureaucracy has allowed the care given to our veterans to fall short of expectations, but for many of those with military experience such treatment is par for the course.

Ubuntu still phones home too much for my liking.

That said, I appreciate how much the OS has improved since I first gave "Breezy Badger" a spin a few years ago, and Ubuntu is the obvious choice when I recommend an alternative OS to my non-tech savvy acquaintances.

I've been using the ssh -C -D 8080 -fN user@server.tld for years now, no VPS needed if you use a free shell account.

Back in the 1970's I remember seeing snow fall halfway down the slopes of 13,796 foot Mauna Kea, something we don't see too often anymore.

Wouldn't -C (compression) help to speed an ssh connection?

Maybe I'm missing something here...

On my FreeBSD and Linux systems, the ssh -f parameter sends the process to the background, and the -N prevents remote command execution.

I would do something like;

ssh -C -D 8080 -fN user@server.tld

Then it's as simple as setting your web connected applications to use the localhost proxy on port 8080.

Sleep deprivation was an integral part of my work experience, from working on my dad's farm during the height of the summer harvest, to the Army. If you couldn't keep up, someone else would.

I often go 30, or more, consecutive hours without sleep when working on certain projects.

No drugs involved, no coffee, just a driving desire to accomplish my goals.

I also sometimes go 2 or 3 days without eating a real meal.

I think I got around 3 hours of sleep last night.

Interesting how many of those commands are not compatible with FreeBSD.
