I suppose jk rowling and her views about women's rights and how trans-rights are clashing into them? The consequences are that have been many attempts to cancel her (some successful).

I honestly believe crypto has a future, but what it looks like I do not know. We're currently in the crypto-bubble, which much like the early web, is full of money grabbers and idiots.

I use Brave as my daily driver, and to hear that it's "cryptoscam" just doesn't align with my experience. You can totally turn off or ignore the crypto stuff if you want. Unlike the majority of the web today which is full of so much tracking, intrusions and scams it seems strange to pass off Brave for offering something different to that.

It's more than a name change though isn't it? It's access to women only spaces and women only sports etc. This is what people are really upset about. I don't think people actually care about name changes.

So what word would you use to describe people who have the biology to bare children? Because we need to have the language to differentiate the two.

In the past we used the word "women", but that has been commandeered... Hence my comment about "person" and IWD.

Here's my prediction:

Russia will take control of all or most nuclear power plants and other infrastructure. At which point it's only a matter of time until the people of Ukraine will surrender with no water or electricity.

As it stands the West can do nothing.

In the case that NATO starts shooting, the sarcophagus over Chernobyl can be bombed (Putin can blame Ukrainians here).

It seems to be that there's no way out for the Ukrainians :(

Please fix the HN link to be https.

largely based on lies

Are you new to politics? This is pretty much standard about all elections/referendums.

Even the remain campaign was full of half truths and manipulations. (Running out of food and medicines for example... When the opposite happened when we needed to vaccinate the entire population).

You raise a good point. In times of emergency, desperation: nationalism can be beneficial.

For the most part however it seems to be destructive.

Unfortunately in the West I think this might be identity politics. There is very much a "us Vs them" attitude with the whole thing. To give an example I see a lot of LGBT "allies" with pin badges, flags, etc. To label oneself as being part of that group.

Without flying the flags you are seen as an outsider.

the government or mafia-like oligarch can shut down or take your business or profits at their whim

That's up to Putin. I think the Oligarchs have perhaps lost there power and leverage within the last 10 days.

Also capitalism and startups are a culture. People who don't grow up around others that think like that don't ever learn how to think in that way.

This is where China steps in. They offer to build factories / infrastructure in exchange for oil & gas. This is what they have been doing in Africa.

no use when your citizens want TVs and jeans.

So I wondered this as well... Given the vast resources within Russia there's no reason why they can't build their own TVs or make their own Jeans. Obviously that's currently not the case, but a society that has a space programme can surely achieve this?

Humans have survived on Earth without infrastructure or farming for most of our existence, so even if the worst happens I can see some people surviving if there are enough natural resources left. It would of course depend on hunter / gatherer skills, which most people do not have, but are totally learnable.

In the book Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari - he even suggested that hunter gatherers had a far better quality of life compared to someone living in a farming society. Obviously what we have now is far better than either.

Then I realized that it doesn't really matter if I get my dream job or make a ton of money, the only thing that matters is living fully in the present.

Yeah, your future self is going to hate you for this.

I mean you (hopefully) don't smoke and drink everyday, because it feels great at the time, but it will shorten and/or reduce your life in a number of significant ways.

A bit of both is probably the best strategy.

This is what I don't get about the Russian invasion. Russia is a technologically advanced country (look at their space programme), they've had all this time to develop drones, missiles, satellites, etc - yet they send in tanks and troops like it's WW2. They've spent years developing assassination techniques, and have used them in the past to remove opposition leaders, and yet they have resorted to a ground invasion to remove the Ukraine government.

None of it makes sense, unless Putin is trying to get the West to start a hot war?
