The fact that the habitat is unfragmented means the virus can more easily spread through the entire population, and not just to more penguins, but to anything else that lives there, given it is affecting mammals too.

You're minimizing this news based on percentages killed so far, when the virus has just arrived and now has unfettered access to those aforementioned 10 million individuals.

It's a mass mortality event because it's infectious, has killed thousands already on Heroína Island and isn't over yet...

I know it's uncool to ask if a commenter has read the article, but...

I'm not sure why this Wikipedia link was submitted without question/comment...

This is one of my pet peeves. I wish OP (in general) would comment as to why they're posting, what they found interesting. I don't flag these posts, but they do sometimes feel like a lazy karma-grab.

From the Guidelines: "If the title includes the name of the site, please take it out, because the site name will be displayed after the link."

I can't delete it, but I can flag it for you. Perhaps @dang will delete it. You can also email him at the Contact link below.

Lots of posts don't get any replies at all, so it's not like there are a hundred LLM bots just spamming every post. You asked a question that a lot of HN users felt they could offer their two cents on. It's not like "how do I balance my interests?" requires a high degree of technical knowledge that only a select few people could speak on...

I feel like HN does a pretty good job of moderation and responding to user concerns, and bot accounts are banned when they're found.
