IPOs to revitalize US PE exit prospects

After two turbulent years in which private equity investors struggled to achieve successful exits and return capital, PE-backed IPOs are showing renewed momentum in 2024.

PitchBook’s latest analyst note looks back at the importance of IPOs to the PE playbook and how well they predict turns in the broader dealmaking cycle. The note also provides a list of 50 top US prospects for going public over the next year. Many of these PE-backed companies have pre-filed, but many have not.

Three factors have created an environment primed for PE-sponsored deals in technology and software in 2024: low valuations of private assets relative to the public markets, a recovery in bank lending to LBO transactions and substantial reserves of PE dry powder.
