Hi imglorp - send me an email at becca@scripted.org . We're considering growing to more regions, and would love to hear from folks who are interested in volunteering outside of NYC or SF. In the meantime, I may also be able to recommend some other orgs that need volunteers near you.

We equip student attending under resourced high schools with the technical coding skills and professional experiences they need to access careers in tech.
Thanks for your interest! Most of our volunteer opportunities are in-person (in-person teaching, mentoring students at Hackathons, hosting field trips to your office, etc.).. but one way someone could help remotely is contributing to https://popcode.org . This is an open-source HTML/CSS/JavaScript editor that we use in our classrooms, developed by a A+ volunteer in NYC. There's a whole list of issues that someone could work on for us, which would help us have even better tools with which to teach in schools: https://github.com/popcodeorg/popcode/issues
Oh hi! Thanks very much :) keep your eye on us too, we have some exciting things in the works in the next year.
ScriptEd employee here! (We’re a nonprofit) - we’re looking for more volunteers to teach web dev in under resourced high schools in San Francisco, Oakland, and NYC.
If you’re interested, apply + learn more here: https://www.scripted.org/volunteer/
Happy to answer any questions too!
Links: http://www.scripted.org/volunteer - also the curriculum is here if you'd like to peruse (or contribute!) https://github.com/ScriptEdcurriculum/curriculum18-19
Hi! Yes we do - in compliance with school district policy, we require all volunteers complete a fingerprinting and background check process.
Hey - sure thing! If you send us an e-mail at info@scripted.org we can make sure you're on our mailing list. In the meantime, I'd recommend checking out organizations like TEALS ( https://www.tealsk12.org/ ) - I believe they teach python in some of their courses, and they're in many cities.
All of the above, AND - I think our community of staff, volunteers, etc. are thinking more along the lines of Toni Morrison..
"I tell my students, 'When you get these jobs that you have been so brilliantly trained for, just remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else. This is not just a grab-bag candy game.'"
Thanks for pointing that out - we've changed the editing rights!
Hi! We don't have formally announced plans to scale - though if you send me a message at becca@scripted.org I can chat with you more. I'm fairly well connected with other orgs nationally that I might be able to recommend to you, depending where you're located!
Some of the companies our volunteers work for have paid volunteering time included as part of employee benefits - however that amount of time is usually 1 day / month, which is less than the amount of time we ask people to volunteer (2x a week, for 1.5 hours each session). Most commonly, our volunteers employ some flex time and make up the hours they spend with us by either coming in to work earlier, or staying late. It does require manager / company support to get approval to do so, however!
Chiming in as a rep of the nonprofit - happy to answer questions about our work! We operate in NYC, San Francisco, and Oakland. We're also looking for a few more volunteers to teach web dev in high schools - and especially in Oakland! Apply in the Bay Area at https://bit.ly/ScriptEdSFBAYvolunteer or in NYC at https://www.scripted.org/volunteer !
