I took a look at your blog and spent some time playing the Aladdin game, I liked that it got comically fast. One thing I really loved on your site is the changing profile picture every time you scroll away, that's a fun touch.

Are you doing similar work now? I haven't returned to anything bioinformatics related, though I do miss it.

People say that, but on the other hand companies like Google have a lot of much better ways of categorizing things now than they did in the past. I'm not sure I buy the excuse of "gosh, it's just too hard for us :(" from this international company worth trillions employing geniuses.

I am not surprised that this happened. This is the logical conclusion of betting. Like in Muay Thai competitions, some efficient attacks are underutilized because they give the performer fewer points, which can be bad for the people betting on them. And their funding comes from the betting, so they change the sport to match what the gamblers want.

You can't introduce gambling into a system without changing other parts of the system.

I've been using the Kagi search engine for months now and I'm not impressed. I bought into it because there were a lot of posts saying that it was "just like old Google" but this has not been my experience. It's the same as new Google, you can type in what you're looking for exactly and you'll get random sort-of related websites.

I remember when you could half-remember a comment from a website, type that into Google, and get taken to the article you were looking for. That was back in like 2010. To me that's the old, and useful, search engine that I want.

It's not a complete waste. 8 years is a lot of time spent learning to build a tool that, sure, might not have been "good" but it was still time spent building a tool. Those skills are applicable elsewhere, and perhaps the most important thing to realize is that at least the time wasn't spent on NFTs.

This may only be tangentially related, but a good piece of advice I heard once was "Don't try to be cool (ie. impressive), try to be nice."

I think it goes a long way in treating people properly.

I have had friends fail to communicate in astounding ways. Once, four of us were planning to go somewhere. A friend suggested somewhere else, I and my other friend agreed, but the fourth friend was not presnet. I told my first friend to tell the one person who was not present about the change in plans. He asks why... I tell him, well, the other guy isn't going to know we changed plans because he isn't here.

Basic communication goes a long way.
