Lodestone is a data quality assurance vendor to large tech companies. Our job is to ensure quality control in their machine learning workflows. We are generalist problem-solvers, embedded in the teams of other companies to support their development.

Open positions:

-Senior Software Engineer: Highly autonomous and flexible position

-Junior/Mid Software Engineers: dev experience required

-Frontend Engineer: this is the most specific role we have, so you must be experienced in frontend development

-QA Engineer: little to no previous dev experience required, but requires a strong commitment to learn coding, as this position will be writing unit, integration and e2e tests

SEEKING WORK - remote

I have spent the past 5 years as a web developer working with PHP and javascript. The past 3 years I have worked at the senior/principal level. I have experience working remotely.

I have learned a number of languages in my free time, but I wish to branch out professionally and I am willing to learn whatever language and framework you use to build your products.

I am flexible in my work arrangements (eg time availability, contract vs employee, full time vs part time, etc). I am more interested in the engineering challenges.

email me if you would like to see my resume and chat jcclinton24@gmail.com

it doesnt need a revolution (that would be a very bad thing given how much power our military has). It just needs to start locally (we all understand how exponential growth works). rather than running for US president in '16, the goal should be small, eg x% of state senators from the bay area.

It didnt work for ron paul. although i guess you could argue that privacy has more people up in arms than our monetary system. either way, i dont see the entrenched powers letting that happen from within.

it doesnt have to be a national party initially. If you took a pro-privacy, socially-liberal, fiscally conservative platform you could make a strong push in large urban centers across the nation. I know that the bay area would be accepting of this (accepting != elected, but it wouldnt get laughed at by the voters, only by the national media).

you just cant name it pirate party. In the us that would probably work against you.

I always thought a good compromise would be that you can sell genetically modified seeds (or eggs or whatever) but you shouldnt be able to own anything that is produced by those seeds. ie children, saplings etc

in other words, you own the process of genetically modifying an organism, not the genes.

I dont know how realistic or unrealistic this is, since ianal.

edit: someone else mentioned the monsanto ruling, which makes this idea sound unrealistic

> Yeah, it's an example of government as envisioned by the founders working as intended - when someone at the state level overreaches, a federal court strikes it down

Jeffersonian democrats certainly were against that idea, as evidenced by nullification, which was in issue up until the civil war.

Maybe the federalists, but it sounds extreme even for them.

It sounds like something that the northern politicians had in mind in the late 19th century or maybe early 20th century.

i know its OT, but could you expand on that idea?

SF is only like 10% of the population of the SF/Oak/SJ bay area triangle. It may have the best brand in the area, but what happens when the housing prices drop in fremont/milpitas and then in santa clara/san jose and then starts working its way up the peninsula?

I think housing in SF is very dependent on 1) the tech boom and 2) the baby boomers who own property in the south/east bay (but wont sell because they missed out on the 2008 sales price). Both of which are temporal in nature.

SF may always be a enclave of the wealthy, but if the rest of the bay area goes to shit, prices will drop. It may not get massacred like SJ eventually will (after the baby boomers houses start hitting the market en masse), but even those wealthy enough to live there will feel it.

javascript has json though, which doesnt make it homoiconic, but it allows you to mimic homoiconicity in a lot of cases. When I write in javascript, I tend to store my data in json and and write code that is generic, with much abstraction that has a small foot print to manipulate the json.

That is scheme-like. That is psuedo-homoiconic.

(If anyone in the know wants to add or refute this, I would love to know whether my non-cs intuition is correct here.)

(also it is still a very mutable language, even with coffeescript/underscore)

I think it is dependent on which accent you have. In my experience as an american (who has met a lot of foreigners), I have found that germans and the dutch seem to have the least problem with the american accent. (Australians too, for a non-european example). There can be a number of reasons for this to be the case, but this is what I have noticed.

>If anyone can leave Facebook it's teens.

Couldnt disagree more. Teens are the most-dependent age group on fb's fake social interactions.

I am 32 and I could leave fb in a second. That is because I realize that im not being social by liking posts or commenting on photos or any of the other common flows. Thats not social! Plus there is not nearly the peer pressure at my age that there is for teenagers to do that type of stuff.

(i never used fb for photos though, which is a big lock-in. my comments are just regarding the social interactions)

>users, photos (flickr), blogposts (tumblr), mail, content

Other than content, arent those second rate internet properties though? Maybe thats their plan in order not to compete with google/amazon.

(i know flickr is used by professionals, but instagram probably has more users)

This article is incoherent and mostly hand waving. The fact that everyone is disagreeing with it for different reasons either speaks to its shallowness or to the fact that it is just wrong about the valley being ideologically homogeneous.

The part you put in parenthesis is the true problem that every hacker should be contemplating every day.

there are two types of iced tea in the south and this is how you order them: (sweet) tea where the 'sweet' is optional and: tea, unsweetened where the waitress gives you a funny look.

I dont find the pretense of acting as an object journalist particularly relevant. Actions speak louder than words. (my point being that MG is less of a journalist than people think, thus making him a fan-blogger like Gruber which is the comparison that this thread originally was about)

There is a fine line between blogger and journalist nowadays. In fact its closer to overlapping circles than a hard line. So while you made a good case that DF is more of a blog than a journalism site, I dont think its 100%.

If you were to ask me if MG is a blogger or journalist, I would scratch my head and probably answer that he is a blogger who works (worked?) for an opinion-dominated news site.

Its hard to separate bloggers from journalists. I dont think Gruber is to blame for that. MG and techcrunch have no qualms about it though.

apple fans who are biased against anything non-apple who both act as journalists (to a differing degree). There are similarities.
