This is the correct response. I use both GrapheneOS and LineageOS. But LineageOS focus is on delivering newer versions of Android to many phones abandoned by their OEM. GOS exclusively focuses on security and privacy. If you want a reasonably secure phone but don't want Google or Apple inside your device, your best bet is GOS.

While censorship is one thing, they forgot another overlooked ability of these app stores: pushing unwanted apps/services to our personal devices without our knowledge. The fact that the majority of people don’t care about this censorship and backdoors makes me think we don’t really appreciate the concept of freedom, and maybe we are okay with being slaves—at least until we cannot take it anymore. Maybe that’s why history repeats itself every few decades to remind us about these values.

Apple and Google dominates the entire smartphone market today. They are ad companies running on surveillance economy. In addition, their platforms are proprietary, privacy invading and freedom disrespecting.

GrapheneOS is the only security and privacy focused alternative we have today. Please support GrapheneOS by nominating them in the 2025 Proton Lifetime Fundraiser.

So at any point in time, atleast one government pushes for encryption backdoors. I can't wait to see the faces of these morons when the backdoor backfires on their own government secrets.

Why do you need attesation? Why do you think Google should own that device and not the user?

Instead it would be great if you join the fight against Google (and Apple) by using FOSS and independent distributions like GrapheneOS. It is the most secure and private option we have today. Most apps work as it is except a few those who purposefully use Google Play Integrity API to block independent platforms.

Reports say IPv6 is gaining market share. But most ISPs are delegating /64 prefix. This is as useless as carrier grade NAT. Atleast with IPv4, I can create NATed subnets for guests, IoT devices etc. That's not possible with IPv6.

Overall it's a negative progress. Worse than IPv4+NAT.

To those who say TOR, VPN, Signal, GrapheneOS or <replace with any privacy tool> is dead, we should use more of them not less. Today privacy became crime because the tech crowd (including many in HN community) ignored slow eradication of our fundamental freedom by evil companies like Apple (Yes, Apple. Don't forget they worked with NSA.) and Google. If crowd like HN is seduced by new AI enhanced, costly and locked phones, then how can a regular citizen understand freedom or privacy?

Freedom is being taken away by govt, because we are making choices that surrender it.

IMO, that is worst of both worlds. You still put your data out there on somebody else's computer but also get to maintain the infrastructure.

Unless you end-to-end encrypt your data, hosting on a VPS is just a marginal improvement over using Google or Apple's regular cloud.

To me self-hosted is having full control over the data. That includes where the data is stored, not just who's maintaining it.

What problem do you think Play Integrity solve other than keeping the user's under Google's walled garden? Play Integrity is a fake marketing term for DRM fromGoogle . It does not guarantee security of the device in any way. My 6~ year old and unpatched Android 10 passes Play Integrity and can run banking apps. That explains everything about Play Integrity. I don't use apps from developers who think they know better than their users.
