--- my comment from an older relevant post ---- I personally reported 3 posts on different FB pages 1st was a religion extremist guy who says to Iraqi people that they should protest and fight the "other side" of the religion (aka start a new civil war) instead of protesting against the corrupted government.

2nd was a post that was praising the guy who murdered the Danish (Or was he Norwegian?) teacher who mocked Islam, and calling him a hero.

and the 3rd was a post that says "Women education is satanic, women's purpose is marriage". --- end old comment ---

4th report was a friend of mine, he reported a page that post's pictures of underage boys im boxers/underwear and write nasty shit in the post and comments, like an obvious pedo community.

all of these 4 reports was "The post was reviewed, and though it doesn't go against one of our specific Community Standards" and then it explains how to block pages

4 years ago one of my clients wanted to "donate" a system for the local fire department to help them do a quick proximity search to find the fire hydrants and quickly choose the healthy one near the fire.

And since it was charity and had a bunch of private data Google was not an option ($$$$), so I (just a full-stack developer back then) was like "listen I have no idea what is this GIS stuff, but I'll give it a try", after a quick research boom PostGIS, reading the docs and testing things, plus QGIS to visualize and to help understand it better 10/10!

That was my unintentional "career" shift, thanks to PostGIS I'm now a senior dev at the largest food delivery company (local), specialized in GIS and realtime data driven systems using PostGIS everyday lol

I'm not from the US so I have no idea what's the history of the PATRIOT Act, but I get the concept, it's just F*ed up and we cant do shit about it

That's why I'm curious, it's more of a movement I guess, also there are multiple types license and idk if blacklisting a specific entity is possible or if it has any legal grounds

Genuine question, how viable is it, if we (code monkeys) created some sort of a blacklist of the entities that are not allowed to use our open source projects? -- something like "We don't support Internet Explorer" but a bit more aggressive? like "These entities don't understand the Internet, we don't support them, they cant use our software"?

Maintaining that list would be a ton of work and edge cases tho :/

Iraqi here (But I live in Turkey), protests were raging yesterday and today, first social media was taken down now the whole internet from mid (Baghdad) to the rest of the south of the country

This is the usual procedure by the "freedom" government they do this every time, the only issue is this time the protestors are not carrying any flags or any political or religious figures names etc... only the Iraqi flag and burning Iranian flags,

so far it's people(sometimes people and the army) vs government... few people got killed already, there is news the Baghdad airport has fallen into the hands of the protestors, and most of the main roads are blocked and crowded with people

As a 5th grade dropout who is a fully self-taught developer, I did Interview, mentor, and supervised a multiple of developers with masters and PhDs to help them understand and get comfortable in the real world of the IT industry, sure they are probably "smarter", faster researchers, more organized than me but I have the experience to put together the big picture, cover the edge cases, account for common mistakes in the domain, understand the market and the clients mentality etc... most of that won't be covered by a PhD.

Noone started his career with a bunch of experience, you'll get boring jobs, you'll encounter annoying bosses or clients, you'll have stress and deadlines pressure, you'll be forced to develop things that don't match "your idea" of quality, you'll probably have some imposter syndrome... these are just common parts of the industry especially for newcomers.

The best advice would be if you're not looking to go into academia then don't go for PhD, it's a waste of time you can use that time to grind through the industry and get that experience. Another important thing IMHO is that no matter how cool your field is, no matter how much you like it, if it fells under the deadlines, pressure, and stress wheel you'll not enjoy it, you'll find something else that seems more fun and you'll wish if you can do that instead!

I would say if you want maximum fun and then have fun on side-projects, open-source, or freelance on the side

These rules are so stupid and actually hurts no one but the poor individual developer, a few years ago I used to live in Syria before the events. I had to find 3rd party mirrors or VPNs for the stupidest shit... like Nvidia graphics driver, adobe flash player, Java runtime and silly stuff like that, some ISPs had public download pages where you can find these general utilities most of it was outdated but does the job.

I guess the US is afraid that terrorists may develop weapons using Adobe flash player xD

I think the GUI stacks are too bloated or too hideous (electron, cpp/qt,c# and it's limitations, etc...) to work with these days so much that the cool kids (hardcore techy people) just gave up and started doing TUIs to solve their own problems directly?
