On Monday, a security researcher specialized in finding exposed databases has identified an unsecured MongoDB server that was leaking the personal details of nearly 11 million users.

More accurate title: "Unsecured MongoDB server contains 11M user records"

MongoDB has terrible security defaults but the software itself is not "leaking" anything, this instance has just not been properly configured.

Now I'm not saying MongoDB is blame free, they can certainly make it better, but the blame is at both the user and software.

Question for the author, why build this? Doesn't this give less meaning to stars on GitHub? If I would use this to star random repositories and then have bunch of random stars on my own repository, what's the value?

Yes, absolutely.

Not only are they usually possible to run offline, if they are not blockchain-based, but they tend to be faster and scale better than traditional web applications.

People usually move through three layers or more of "web" on a daily basis. We have the personal web at home, one at our office and one global one. But moving between these three usually requires specialized applications that are built with roaming in mind, if you want this.

If we instead would build our applications with something like IPFS, we can have applications that transparently move between these domains and works everywhere, without having separate applications or extra development effort.

I think at this point, most technology people have realized the faulty model we built the web on, compared to the internet. Slowly the rest is waking up to the fact that the web could be better in every way, but it'll take time to move everything.

Most of the grief regarding ActivityPub vs RSS is that they are enough similar that a migration path could have been made where RSS gets an upgrade and could maybe be a bit compatible with ActivityPub rather than just ignoring RSS and creating ActivityPub without a clear upgrade path.
