Thank you for the benefit of the doubt. I am not a sock puppet -- if you look at all those accounts you'll see that absolutely none have any overlap chronologically in terms of posting (well, until last night) or voting.

Sorry dang. But, I got deeply offended by being called a liar. I've posted projects on this current account that link to my real identity, so it was important I guess for me to clear my name. I'm also petty like that, but not normally to the extent that it causes problems. I think I've gotten one prior and much milder warning from you over the course of my time on HN. I'll go back to lurking for a while for now.

The problem is obvious and needs no explanation. The post in question extrapolates that all women are gold diggers from a single study that purports to have found manipulative behavior in a few groups of monkeys.

What did you find difficult about Python 3?

I switched around 3.1, though granted I was still a novice programmer then and didn't have to port any legacy code. I had so many issues with Unicode in Python 2 (some may have been my own ignorance at the time, but with 3 a lot of those issues magically disappeared). Since text processing / NLP is my main focus, it was an easy decision to switch.

Google pulled out of China because Gmail got hacked and Google assumed the hackers were affiliated with the Chinese government.

Then it seems pulling out was the right move. If Chinese citizens trusted that Google could secure their communications, and Google was then unable to, that put certain citizens at risk of persecution. Better to have them using a Chinese email provider where the default assumption is that everything is monitored, and then use the proper tools for actual private communication.

What I'm telling you is that I, as someone who has observed this happening from the beginning, am under the impression that the people posting this stuff don't come from a single uniform ideology. It's not totally baseless speculation -- I read through people's post histories all the time to get a sense of who they are. Where's your evidence to the contrary?

The first user just posts about Dota all the time. The second has only a few posts. As far as I can see only the last user has posts in r/The_Donald and seems to fit the bill of being alt-right.

I have also been amused by all the delusional assertions on 4chan and r/pizzagate, and I feel sorry for anyone innocent caught up in this, but this whole thing would have never caught on if there weren't real connections between the Clintons and child sex offenders.

Bill Clinton really did ride on a child sex trafficker's private jet 26 times, and really went to his private island where underage girls have alleged that they were enslaved. It's also true that underaged-sexter Anthony Weiner's computer had all of Clinton's emails on it. It's true that the Podestas are close friends with Dennis Hastert and Tony mentioned post-conviction that he's "stayed in touch with denny Hastert [...] all these years". It's true that Hillary and Cheryl Mills emailed repeatedly back and forth about child trafficker Laura Silsby, with Mills referring to her only as "Laura", and that Bill Clinton traveled to Haiti and brokered a short prison term for Silsby and the release of the other "missionaries" involved.

So, while "pizzagate" in itself may be totally false, rumors like this would not exist if the US did not consistently invite human garbage into its highest political office.

Well, as an anecdote, I have been following this since day one and I'm absolutely not a member of the alt-right (if you do a search, you'll find that I'm the first person to ever mention "pizzagate" on HN).

Not saying that I believe any of the claims about Alefantis (I just have a fascination with conspiracy theories), but defgeneric is correct IMO to say that this is not solely a product of the alt-right.

I have to say this attitude makes me viscerally angry. Men have a much higher incidence of heart disease, so maybe women should not be forced to pay for that? Men engage in lots of unhealthy, risky behaviors, but I've never heard a woman make a statement analogous to yours. It's like saying "Well I'm not handicapped, so why the hell should I have to pay for special accommodations for those people?".

If you accept that socialized healthcare is a good idea, then it seems to follow fairly obviously that we're all unique and will have individualized healthcare needs.

Plus, is it really a good idea to suppress a meta-discussion about propaganda and false information? Those "fake news" articles and their corresponding beliefs will still exist, even if Facebook manages to filter them out, but proponents of those ideas will either never see critical discussion or they'll just move to other platforms. It seems like a great way to further fracture our already divided society.

To take a more recent example, when Chris Cuomo stated recently on CNN that it's illegal to view the Wikileaks Podesta emails, should something like that be censored if it's posted to Facebook? It's plainly false, and given that Cuomo has a law degree and a family full of politicians, he was almost certainly deliberately lying.

I tend to agree with you. I'm looking at the NYT archives right now and finding examples both of uncritical quoting of official sources and straight up assertions about WMDs in Iraq.

Is this fake news? I'd say so. But, I have an even lesser criterion for fake news -- I think the most insidious type of fake news doesn't necessarily tell a single lie, but rather selectively reports the truth.

I am also 100% certain that it's impossible to filter out "fake news", whatever your definition is, without suppressing some true but fringe information.

It was one of the the few smaller colleges with a linguistics department, so there's that. I had small class sizes and good, well-known professors, but the main reason is because I was 18 and I was just expected to go to a college like that. I personally didn't want to go to college at all, but it wasn't an option, and my parents fortunately had the money to cover everything. I got a national merit scholarship which knocked about 20,000$ off the price tag (and I contributed ~3000$ a year), but still, way too pricey. Many of my friends took out huge loans to go there. If I had the choice I would've lived abroad for a few years and then went to a state college.

Even if that was true, it's not the old days anymore. The college I went to is now at 50,000$+ a year with compulsory room and board. Try paying that off with a part-time job and still competing well with your rich peers.

No matter what, it's an enormous advantage to not have to work while in college. I know I wouldn't have done as well if I was working simultaneously, since I was still stressed out as is.

So, I am not at all an expert in finance, but there are claims (from Jill Stein for example) that the real cost of the bailout was much, much higher.

You're preaching to the choir :) I find it totally revolting that the response from the left to Trump's election is to blame "fake news", as if it's possible for an algorithm or even a very intelligent human to determine with certainty what is real and what is fake, and as if the largest media organizations haven't themselves been pushing "fake news" for a long time now.

I'm well aware of the Clinton's (and Trump's) connections to Epstein. I am very curious how the newer revelations of their connections to Laura Silsby, and of Podesta's connections to people like Dennis Hastert, will turn out. I don't want to form any strong conclusions yet, because some of the recent "pizzagate" claims are relying on thin evidence, but nothing would shock me anymore.

I never thought I'd see the day where I'm citing Breitbart and Erik Prince, but reality is stranger than fiction these days and I'm not sure what the hell to believe anymore.

He made the situation far worse. Under Obama we have increased police militarization, expansion of the surveillance state, unchecked abuse at CIA black sites, consolidation of executive power, new undeclared wars, and more. No one even made a peep when Obama signed the 2012 NDAA that allows for indefinite detention of American citizens without trial. And now there is a precedent, ripe for abuse under fascist Donald Trump, of killing American citizens without trial (Obama signed off on the killing of Anwar al-Awlaki and his 16 year old grandson by drone).

To be clear, I find it just as horrific when non-American citizens are jailed indefinitely and killed extra-judicially, but to me those last two examples reveal that Obama doesn't even follow the moral code that he pays lip service to. He's empty, a badly disguised wolf in sheep's clothing, but nearly everyone fell for it.

I'm from Minnesota and have put in 100,000+ miles of driving there, much of it in the winter. I'm not sure how I feel about removing trees and other side-of-the-road obstacles, but just wanted to point out that it's possible in very bad conditions to drift off the road, spin out on the highway, rear-end the car ahead, etc. even if you're being extremely cautious. I hit black ice at 30 mph on the highway and my car rotated a full 540 degrees, but fortunately didn't end up in a ditch. Sometimes conditions and visibility can be so bad in Minnesota, that I don't think any outsider can understand how difficult it is just to stay on the road. I've taken drives where you see cars in the ditch every quarter mile. I rear-ended a guy once, but he wasn't even angry because he saw my car slide slowly toward him from at least 50 feet away.

I don't follow. Driving on a snowy mountain road is still incredibly dangerous though, even after I've adapted my behavior.
