I'm a full-stack developer, primarily in Ruby on Rails. I've also built apps in Android (Java) and currently learning iOS (Swift).

If I understand this correctly, Brightwork is essentially acting as a middleman between APIs and the developer. Are you creating new API auth tokens on behalf of each user or are you using only one token and using that to make all of the API calls? If it's the latter, how do you handle rate limiting?

Is this concept against the terms of third party APIs like Twitter/Facebook?

Advertisements (specifically online advertisements) are used by companies looking to reach their target market. For example, fantasy sports sites advertise on ESPN.com because a lot of sports fans go there.

How will you get sports fans to visit listing-platform.com?

Do distributors currently have software that you can tie into to get up-to-date stock and prices?

Are there any legal hurdles with scaling this across state lines?

Phrasing matters. If someone applies with a project management app you can say "Seriously? Another project management app? How is this different than X, Y, or Z?" or you can say "How is this different than X, Y, or Z?"

The former puts the applicant on the defensive whereas the latter encourages discussion.

I think a mini application with a few questions from the normal YC app as a comment would be helpful. I see a ton of Show HNs in which I have no idea what the product does (either because the website copy is vague/confusing or because I don't know the market). Having a comment template or something reviewers can look at without have to ask the same questions in every thread would be great.

This is interesting, but dangerous. Smokers make up 90% of lung cancer deaths [1]. At some point you have to acknowledge that smoking definitely does something to influence lung cancer.

I've been told I have white coat hypertension. My bp readings are 130-140/85 in doctor offices and usually 110-120/75 outside.

High bp runs in my family so I've been considering monitoring on a more consistent basis. I may have to try this out.

And by the way, except for two elections, voter turnout in the U.S. has hovered between 70% and 80% since the 60s.

Where are you getting this from? I was under the impression it's closer to 50%.

For those that don't know about the Phil Ivey "hack," here's basically what he is accused of:

A certain card manufacturer had a defect in which there were tiny deviations in the designs on the backs of their cards.

What they would do was the dealer would show all cards face down and Ivey and his accomplice would have the dealer rotate the cards so that the designs were all the same way. Then as they would play, they would have the dealer rotate the numbers 6, 7, 8, and 9 (which are the good cards in Baccarat).

This way they could spot all of the good cards face down based on the designs on the back. Ivey made sure to request a card deck shuffler to ensure the cards weren't rotated during shuffles.

Ivey won tens of millions of dollars doing this and is now being sued by several casinos even though he never touched the cards, didn't have any kind of cheating device, and had the casino agree to every move he did.

If reddit figures out how to get past the legal and technical hurdles this brings, I'm very excited to see what comes of it and if other online communities will do something similar. Communities which produce a lot of content/value for free such as open source developers can begin getting equity in the companies they are helping.

When was the last time you used Android?

That's what I figured. That seems like it would be incredibly clunky to use. Turn the dial, scroll up, turn the dial some more, scroll left.

I'm skeptical about a few things - mostly regarding the dial. They are trying to replace pinch-to-zoom, but how does it know where to zoom? Also, the main UI screen with all of the apps looks ridiculous. They don't want you touching the watch, unless it's to click on a tiny app icon?

Parse is a Backend-as-a-Service (BaaS). A BaaS is a great solution to connect your app to a backend server without having to build the backend yourself.

Why would you want your app to connect to a backend? Without a backend, you can only store data from a user in a database on their local device; which means that data is only available on that device.

If you need to do a login system, any kind of social interaction (sharing data between users), a leaderboard, syncing data across devices, etc. - you will need a backend. Parse helps you with that by providing you APIs to do all of those things.

It's important to keep in mind YC was judging these companies based on their long term goals, whereas we can only judge them based on their version 1.0.

Kickstarter and Indiegogo provide so many advantages to indie entrepreneurs. Network effects, a large number of people with credit cards on file, free marketing and indexing. Also, when you see a Kickstarter link you know you are being asked to crowdfund something.

Open Tilt would be more beneficial for companies with marketing teams or an already known brand.

Stripe paid $3,000,000 for 2,000,000,000 stellars FWIW.

Edit: They are calling the $3M a loan, so not sure if that is the full payment in stellars or not.

YC is all about investing in companies that solve a problem. Gaining early adopters is a problem that product builders have, and Product Hunt seems to be doing a good job of helping to solve that problem.

A lot of people I follow must use Tweetdeck. This has been retweeted on my feed several times in the last few minutes.

We're still very early in the bitcoin story. Every "chicken and the egg" market gains traction like this - the start is fueled by early adopters on one side (btc buyers and miners) while the other side slowly opens up to it (venders).
