Absolutely. They hooked up an LM and asked it to talk like it's thinking. But LMs like GPT are token predictors, and purely language models. They have no mental model, no intentionality, and no agency. They don't think.
This is pure anthropomorphization. But so it always is with pop sci articles about AI.
If your premise above is true, then we'd expect to see similar sorts of variations in the various fonts derived from drafting style
If you look at the photos in the article, there are a lot of variations! For example, in the article, if you look at the first two sets of photos of keyboards, you see a variety of shapes, especially visible with the 6s/9s, 0s, Rs, Ss, etc. And then in the next set of photos (the ones with a selection of plaques), you again see a collection of various letter shapes - look at the varying shapes of Gs, Ss, etc. This repeats throughout, when you look at the random assortments of plates and signage.
Later on, after he discusses ANSI and DIN standards, the author goes on to say:

Except that the specimens he shows right below, of ANSI Y14 and MS 33558 (and whatever the third one is), are very different from Gorton and even from each other - just look at those letter forms. Which makes sense, as their lineage is _not_ from Gorton, but from traditional lettering.
So that's what I mean - it's not that Gorton _specifically_ is everywhere, it's just that draftman's lettering style is everywhere, and in many variants, including the very popular Gorton one.
Of course I read the details on stencils and patterns in the text. But you misunderstand what I'm saying.
What I'm saying is that there are many "concrete instantiations" of drafting lettering style, that all look basically the same, because they all came from the same source, and Gorton is just one of them. So what we're seeing in elevators and on plaques is not "Gorton" specifically. While in contrast we do see Helvetica specifically on NYC subway signs, Johnston in the London tube, etc.
Too fine of a point? Perhaps. And also, it doesn't take away from the quality of the essay which is a delightful romp through the history of draftman's lettering showing up in all sorts of forgotten utilitarian places.
(But I've got to ask - what's with the ad hominem at the end? We should be above that.)
That's an assumption, I read it just fine. :) I just disagree with how the author keeps talking about draftsman's lettering as if it were some company's font (e.g. Gorton and Leroy) rather than a commonly taught community standard.

I'm afraid the author has it backwards. This style of writing didn't start as a font from some company.
This is just how you used to be taught to do lettering in a drafting class. The straight lines and simple shapes make it easy to do lettering with pencil or a pen, which is also why all the lines are the same width and all the line caps are rounded.
Later on these turned into stencils, which let users do lettering quickly by tracing the pen inside the stencil - and then turned into fonts for use in print. But all that came later. What we have here is just lettering people learned in drafting classes, and which was later used to make stencils and templates.
I would just add that Mathematica-style term rewriting (e.g. analytical integration, or equation solving) is done with _semantics-preserving_ symbolic solvers, which are hand-made and human-reviewed to guarantee correctness.
LLM style pattern matching and rewriting does not preserve semantics, except accidentally due to an overwhelming amount of examples.
There are people working on that! Google for LLM + PDDL.
There are big problems with hallucinations because LLMs are not smart enough to know when they're starting to make mistakes.
But there's lots of work in this area, and generally in different ways to nail neural and symbolic systems together.
This is exactly right.
Planning and reasoning have long standing meaning in AI, based on explicit knowledge representation and inference. It's a subspace of AI that predates LLMs by decades.
But LLMs don't do that kind of planning and reasoning, and CoT is very clearly not a reasoning technique in the AI sense.
Interesting fact: Unity doesn't use a Microsoft GC, or the Microsoft implementation of CLR.
They had integrated the competing Mono implementation early on, and it came with its own "stop the world" Boehm GC.
They've been trying to move to Microsoft runtime for years but it's slow going.

Also, pros: world-class architecture, fun music scene, great museums and of course The Art Institute, top universities and everything that comes with that, great restaurants from every cuisine under the sun, very immigrant-friendly city, lovely tree-lined streets with block parties, I could go on and on. Oh, and living is affordable and people are Midwest Nice.
Cons: it's the great flatness - you have to drive for hours to see hills. Tech industry is ok but very b2b and fintech focused and not a lot of consumer or entertainment stuff. Also as a very liberal city it's a favorite target of culture warrior types.
Tie: winter. Yeah, it gets cold and snowy. But also, it's "just weather". It's the same every year and people deal with it pretty easily.
There appear to be two very interesting results:
1. We can observe how the state machine gets generated, first just a jumble of locations in a hub and spokes topology (no correlations), then some correlations start happening pairwise, making a kind of a beads on a string topology, and then finally the mental model snaps marvelously to two completely separate paths that meet at ends. It's amazing to see these mental models get formed in vivo out of initial unstructured perceptions.
2. In addition to standard HMM modeling, authors find that a "biologically plausible recurrent neural network (RNN) trained using Hebbian learning" can mimic some of this (but not exactly). But more interestingly, they find that LSTMs or transformers cannot. Which makes sense structurally, but it's a good reminder for those who believe the anthropomorphic hype that transformers have memory or other such (they don't :) ).
The scanning is indeed very intrusive, though.

About ten years ago Adobe made a strategic decision to kill Flash.
They stopped working on ActionScript tools (Flash IDE, AS3 compiler, etc) and switched all their web designer tooling (web animations etc) to Javascript. For a while they kept pushing out Flash security updates, but only because they had an enormous existing install base - but even so, that happened with a skeleton crew, and I'm not sure it's still being maintained.
So yeah, there's nothing stopping them now - because they already stopped years ago.

But metro areas are important! If I'm looking at SFBA jobs, I wouldn't restrict myself to the 7x7, right? But adding all the little peninsula towns by hand would be a chore.
How about adding a metro area filter, not just plain city?
Also they only include startups headquartered within city limits, not in the suburbs and the greater Chicagoland? It's a funny omission, like a list of SF startups eliding the rest of the Bay Area. :)

Gamedev here. It's nice that the article recognizes the recent "mellow games" popularity. There's always been that current in gaming - in the 2010s "walking simulators" were popular (but with much more focus on story), in 2000s / late 1990s it was "game toys" like The Sims, or online MUDS and Second Life and so on.
People always wanted virtual places to just chill, and not have to be challenged all the time or have to struggle etc.
But also the article's focus on chores feels like a distraction. It's not that chores as such are exciting, it's more that you're messing around in a virtual world with often unexpected physics (job sims), or otherwise simplifying the complexity of real life (trucking sims etc). And lots of this popularity is also because, with Unity and Unreal, it has become very easy to make these kinds of physics-based 3D worlds with wacky physics, especially for tiny teams on small budgets - so lots and lots of people are making them.
Age of Empires 1 had AI scripts that were written as production rules in a very Lisp-like syntax. (You can still find some online.)
Not sure if they integrated a full Lisp or Scheme system, but since the rules were not arbitrary source code, nor doing unification, etc., they could have just hand rolled a custom reader, and written the rule engine itself in C...
I'm saying that doing something like compiling a flagship OSS application into your core product doesn't happen accidentally due to a "misunderstanding" when you're a huge corporation.

A strange article that focuses on a straw man instead of the core problem.
The understanding of intellectual property among gamers and the companies which serve them differs substantailly from that of free software, and literacy in the values and philosophy of free software among this community is very low.
This is plainly false. Game devs are thoroughly aware of IP law, and the huge variety of licensing contracts and obligations. I mean, we have to be, otherwise we'd be having constant problems with software and business partners on one end, and with internet randos stealing and cloning our work for their own benefit the other hand.
And OSS licenses are typically the least complicated ones - and the values of OSS are very well understood, and many game companies contribute what they can as well.
So what's the real problem here? It's that a huge international video streaming conglomerate decided to intentionally violate software licensing conditions, in order to get a product to market faster.
This was not an accident due to "lack of understanding". Maybe it was a case of "get it to market first, we'll swap out that component later"? Or maybe "go ahead and bundle it in, nobody will be able to sue us in our jurisdiction"? Who knows.
But throwing gamers and game developers under the bus, just because some games-adjacent megacorp is behaving badly, is a really weird look.
Very cool to hear that Chris Ware is co-curating this, he's a legendary comic book artist [1], so I'm sure this is going to be eye opening. Can't wait to see it!
That’s why the 386SX had a pretty short shelf life. Once AMD had 386 chips to sell, Intel cut prices on 486s. But for a couple of years it served a purpose. And the chip lived on as a budget option for a couple of more years.
TBH that kind of a short shelf life wasn't just a 386 thing. Clocks speeds and architectures were advancing quickly, and all chips had a really short shelf life.
For example, in the span of 5 years (say '91-96) you could upgrade from a 386SX 16MHz to a 486DX 50MHz to a Pentium 90MHz, each time paying about the same amount of money but getting a 3x speed-up. And other components like video cards were improving just as quickly.
People were upgrading every couple of years because the difference between older and newer models was night and day. Imagine if in 2015 you bought an Intel i3 3GHz and this year you could buy an i7 15GHz with 8x the RAM for the same price.
Rod Brooks is a great example, he's someone who has done more in robotics, across a range of paradigms, than maybe anyone else in the world - and who has been very candid in his criticisms of promises around full self driving.
But it doesn't matter, people choose to believe marketing hucksters instead. :(
Go back a few years and many here were incredulous if anyone suggested we might be looking at decades to have full door-to-door self-driving.
As someone who has done this kind of push-back here, I can confirm - this place was highly incredulous of, if not downright hostile, to people with experience in AI who were explaining all these were false promises.
Anyone who actually did robotics knew just how much of a pipe dream this is, how slow progress is, and how solving the easy 50% is worth nothing because the real world gets superlinearly difficult. ML made a great jump, but it only solved parts of the problems we needed solving, and so far failed to introduce a bridge to those other parts. But you try telling people, and they won't listen, and now I understand the curse of Cassandra. :)
But I'm reserving special bile for those CEOs and Directors of Research who knew full well that we don't know how to make this stuff, and that most of it is an open research problem that's decades away from productizing - and yet they marketed it anyway, as if it was a done product that's ready to go, and took customers' and investors' money for something that experts knew was very, very, very clearly vaporware.
Now I'm remembering dropping monoliths all over the place and ending up with hyper intelligent mollusks and carnivorous plants. That game was wild. :)
