I'm okay with this. Before, I was definitely using DDG less.
It's good to see Microsoft still keeping up the good fight.
"Dont be evil" seems like a distant alternative universe...

As per theverge article, they did nothing when anti-semitic memes and jokes were being posted by their employees.
So what can we take away from this? Github's "professional conduct at workplace" and "diversity" is complete farce.
I'm ready to move to bitbucket after this incident. When you promote people who share hatred, this means the company at the top probably also shares the same vision.
This is a PR disaster for github and there is NO WAY I can support github going forward.
Once again, somebody has flagged every single criticisms of Github's original decision. Is this Github doing damage control? I'm going to move our team completely off github now.
see my profile. all flagged. definitely not deliberate at all as my comments weren't even inflammatory or breaking HN rules.
Just some old timer users afraid that not everybody is buying into his/her/their narrative.
Divide & conquer. This is the war that is being waged on America; your minds. Who has the most intimate and proximity in determining what the collective sees? The device in your pocket is how people view the world. Nobody is reading books, nobody is practicing critical thinking anymore.
If I was a foreign power I wouldn't go up militarily against the US, that would be disastrous. Instead, I would head to the universities, I would fund the companies that are in close proximity to the consumer of popular media. I would start 20,30,40 years ago and slowly change what the people in your country thinks about their status quo. The top brass doesn't care because they don't see weapons. Underpaid, underappreciated, unscrupulous individuals are easily won over. Again, the decision makers don't see the enemies here. Then one day, the small cuts collectively add up and the wounds begin to rot from within. Once again, nobody raises alarms because they are incentivized or naivete from being #1 for so long.
I would go even further by focusing on the existential crisis of the non-majority ethnic groups and exploit it into hating the very country they are in because of isms. Then you go to the other side which is the conservative portion of the majority ruling class and sell them the idea that those people are ungrateful and hostile.
Throw technology and fast food equivalent of entertainment that creates a population addicted to the short bursts of serotonin and you just might be witnessing what you are seeing today.
Bonus points for dividing the political ruling class by feeding exploitative information true or not that will be weaponized.
It doesnt help that they constantly shut down criticism of it which only emboldens those who live in this new borderline thought police order as the norm.
The side effect of this is that it aggravates hostility towards those very groups that society is "protecting". I just see no way out of this downward spiral.
Pretty soon we will be "reeducated" when it offends the hypersensitive hive mind in a semi totalitarian "western democracy"
I do believe that we will see secession of states like Texas who has their own conventional military and tech giants relocating there signals tax cuts. This would seriously undermine the Biden-Harris administration and I don't believe that Texas in particular will end up like Quebec where it needs to rely on Federal subsidies and generous tax credit for businesses.
I love that bitcoin maximalists have now become the ire of the global warming movement. Quite fitting as it literally is the ponzi scheme of our generation helping criminals launder their money. History will not be kind to those who pushed shitcoins, I personally would never ever hire someone who've been associated with such outfit.
From their photos, this looks mighty impressive!

Still not as good as printed ink but this is good enough for many applications.
My theory is the instagram effect. People actually believe what they see is real and so the people living in those instagram photos believe i the "fake it till you make it" toxicity.
Also, Flutter will most likely be discontinued in 2 years.
any source on this?
Yes primarily to build a mobile app but I want to be able to have a web version as well. I guess I want to understand what the overall experience has been using Flutter with Amplify as that seems to be the winning combo, although I am open minded.
I've used React/Redux before and couldn't help but feel that it was over-engineered sort of like micro-service architecture but to each his own.
oh man so it was true. our greatest fear is being realized now.
damn thats really all I wanted. Just a really easy way to receive, send email from an temporary address that isn't from a free website.
You pretty much described Vancouver, BC. One of the lowest average salary in North America, expensive housing, and normalized exploitation of labor. Fake positivity is just the cultural fact of life here and I think it hurts productivity.
We all know that because housing is so scarce, having a job or not can mean you have a roof over your heads or not. It's really disgusting the way they treat workers here. So of course there is going to be a Stockholm syndrome effect here.
Won't pay the market price but want the best. From what I've heard from insiders, they all do "surveys" with each other to fix wages since the 2000 dot come bubble collapse. The Vancouver Model is essentially: underpay your workers, demand the best and increase margins.
Then they wonder why we can't be like Silicon Valley. Most startups here get acquired by pre-primary market and very few ever IPO thus rendering stock options worthless.
It's no wonder that there is a massive brain drain going on and that startups here consist mostly of immigrant workers. I'm sure in some scale the exact same thing is taking place in SV but at least Indian engineers are making far more than what they would here in the Florida of Canada.
What makes me go crazy right now is that I can't access my AWS account because the OTP will no longer work. I tried resyncing but to no avail.
I am at a loss as to how this could've happened. I used Google Authenticator and simply didn't log in for a few months.
Still there is this weird cognitive dissonance amongst software engineers in non-FANG companies that union is somehow bad and that preventing people working over the weekend for free is detrimental to the industry.
can you explain more about the alias feature? what makes it special? Because I think this could be a killer feature as I have that exact same problem when signing up to websites
I love this collective blitzkrieg against Whatsapp & Facebook.
90s called and we want our internet back. Now I hope that we will see a revival of the simplicity of the 90s, where the power is handed back to the people, where you could write desktop apps using Visual Basic and write a webpage in HTML with frames.
Facebook-owned WhatsApp said they would work to "clear up misinformation" around its privacy policy.
Censorship and ban hammer has now become "clearing up misinformation". Facebook and others have become the Ministry of Truth, just like the novel 1984 predicted.I'm sold. If I pay $3/month can I migrate all of my dozen Google accounts? I have an email for each product in my portfolio and switching back and forth.
I would gladly pay a subscription fee if it means Google isn't reading my emails to sell me ads.
I've been a long time fan of Android but I still cannot be forced to swap it for the Apple ecosystem which really is no better than Android.
What I would like is a hardened, privacy focused distro of Android that is guaranteed to be independent from Google. Sounds like a tall order but here's hoping Samsung will come up with their own mobile OS although how unlikely this will be.
Honestly I've stopped using Chrome and always use DDG, and Firefox is my default web browser now. I've ditched Chrome for good as Firefox is just as good and I feel less creeped out.
I think the era of "free stuff for your data" is over. People have witnessed the true cost of a zero barrier social network services which is the division of society and people creating their own realities and clashing with others (ex. flat earthers, trump etc.)
Going forward I expect lot of these decentralized, run-by-donations services to trend upwards. We will still have FB, Google, and the likes but as they lose users their pervasiveness will have to increase to compensate for the loss in users.
This is good. This is what blockchain should've been but couldn't.
This is a good sign. Thanks to Zuckerberg's mistake, Signal reaps all the rewards. What can we learn from this?
Just because you own a platform doesn't mean you have an economic moat. The crowd's sentiment can change overnight and I think Zuck is honestly out of touch with public sentiments.
He probably thinks that he can run for US presidency using Facebook as a launchpad but all the money in the world won't fix myopia.
