I wrote Daniel an email once from a personal (non-academic) account once as I felt like there was something meaningful to discuss, though I didn't expect a response. He did indeed reply, and seemed remarkably down to earth and genuine considering he was something of a rockstar in pop-sci/psych. RIP.

+1 on L-citrulline, caution on supplement quality - many manufacturers sell 2:1 citrulline malate to reduce costs which means you effectively need to double the dose to actually consume a given target dose.
Seasoned (non-enhanced) lifter here with a science background
There is a solid evidence base for creatine - it's one of the only supplements that actually has a decent evidence base. It's also relatively cheap and generic brands work.
Generally with the fitness industry, the key is looking for the quality sources of information. There are some good resources out there focussed on an evidence based and naturals or being open & transparent with information about "the dark side"...
- SSD abel - Geoffrey Verity Schofield - Team 3DMJ - Dr Mike Israetel - Stronger by Science - Brains and Gains with Dr. David Maconi
Also.....one of the biggest benefits of regular exercise and lifting for me personally is the mental health side of things. Really can't overstate this.
Not a tax expert here.
Singapore has a progressive personal tax system with top personal tax rate of 22% (i have not looked at Dubai).
The UK also has a progressive personal tax system, they just cut their top rate of tax from 45% to 40%
Corporate tax is 17% in Singapore, and 19% in the UK.
Also factor in, Ireland has a corporate tax rate of 12.5% and progressive tax rate up to 40%.
This cut seems meaningful from a market confidence perspective, it is unclear how the UK intends to fund these tax cuts in tandem with energy bailouts. Economists have taken a view that the books do not balance here. The UK has suggested that economic "growth" will solve the problem. In terms of attracting talent and businesses (and now possibly investment) to drive that growth as an alternative to the likes of Singapore or Ireland it seems unlikely.
During my masters i used DMSO as a carrier for various lab experiments. The general consensus was to avoid skin contact with it.
I don't know how the study was set up because i haven't looked yet, i will be looking to see if being awake vs asleep is a confounding variable.
Sorry i haven't look at this properly yet - keen to know if i can upload a customer pre-trained model using any of the popular libraries (pytorch, keras etc) and just do the deployment as an app with Slai?
fast.ai are doing the best work democratizing AI (machine learning and neural networks), including natural language
Can't recommend the course enough and it's incredible that such a quality resource is available for essentially zero cost

the newcastle diet has had data on this for a while.
https://www.diabetes.co.uk/diet/newcastle-study-600-calorie-...
Keto, vegan, high carb, low carb, - it really doesn't matter in terms of creating a significant energy deficit for a sustained period of time - the best diet is one that an individual can adhere to.

How about just wrapping yourself in mirrors :)
"This is terribly wrong information, to the point of causing more harm to people who take it seriously."
^ this is generally correct for many of the classes of substances mentioned; however, it is also terribly wrong information concerning Opiate withdrawal.
I'm not sure in terms of case numbers - people can and do die from Opiate withdrawal due to vomiting and diarrhea leading to dehydration and/or heart failure due to elevated sodium levels.
This is clearly very preventable from a harm reduction perspective with the correct information.

It seems like the theme here is asymmetry in legal firepower & resources between entities.
I do personally feel like that the asymmetry is smaller between elastic and AWS than the say an indie dev and a company with $1M revenue for various reasons.
This doesn't mean that there still isn't a meaningful asymmetry between elastic and AWS.
I would say ideally wherever they hangout. Figuring that out is a big part of the job, next is to find out how to engage with them. Going through that process will lead to a lot of learning. Figuring out a distribution channel for whatever you are doing is essential for getting to market and finding early users will inform that process. Read the mom test if you haven't already so you have a framework for how to speak to potential users.
Sorry, we will get that fixed over the next couple of days! p.s thanks for the heads up
Vaudeville Villain is possibly my favourite work by him and i didn't like it on release. It was very much an album ahead of it's time and has grown on me massively with time.
I think part of the all caps thing thing is world building and relates to the graffiti influence in hip hop. All caps being and hand style used in many graffiti tags (and the MF DOOM tag). With DOOM a lot of the time you have to infer the meaning of a rhyme from what you know about DOOMs influence and his other works.
"He write "VIK" in a sick demented handstyle" -Viktor Vaughn (another alias), Raedawn.
Long time MF DOOM fan. Saw him live 3 times. One time was almost certainly an impersonator which people got angry about. I personally felt it was an innovative and funny move which played into the whole persona. He brought a lot of innovation to the genre.
Last time I checked Spain, japan, and singapore all had longest lifespans. I’m pretty sure people have to work till later than average in those countries. What if having “purpose” (a vocation) for longer is more important than dietary or exercise factors.
mushrooms are amazing
I remember reading an interesting study around adult bees reversing ageing markers when they where given larvae to look after. This implied some "ageing plasticity"

Actual scientist. I believe Record keeping should be kept, i'm not saying it justifies a full publication but these records should be kept. If you go on to publish then these records should be acknowledged in the publication. It can be included in appendices / extra information even if it's not in the main article.
"Countless animal experiments are uninterpretable simply because they were poorly executed by first year graduate students. There is no other way to learn. Write them off as animals used for training if we want full accounting, but researchers' time is scarce enough as it is so asking them to publish uninterpretable results is a non-starter."
I'm sorry but this simply isn't true. During my masters i did in vivo surgery on 30 rodents and tested how many the procedure was succesful in (10). I had to record how many the procedure was sucessful in and write this up in my methods. I'm not sure how you see keeping a record of this as something that takes a significant length of time that you wouldn't bother to record it.
In fact i'm pretty sure (at least for the UK) that keeping records like this is essential under the home office rules for animal safety in scientific procedures. These rules are there to help with the 3 R's (reduce, replace, refinement). This guidance aims to cut down on the use of animals in research or at least ensure quality experiments are being ran. If you don't measure - how can you improve?
Well given it’s a data science orientated conf shouldn’t a more scientific approach to be taking the judging whether this violation was in line with the norms of other talks given at the conference. They could randomly sample 4-5 talks if watching every single one is too much time.
It would be intersting to watch all of the other presentations from this confrence. Did any one else, perhaps not as high profile, make any comments which could be agreed as worthy of a CoC violation? What happened?
Jeremy Howard has done a LOT for the machine learning community and the world because he really has democratised machine learning and made it extremely accessible for people. Not just with free lecture videos, but by buiding and releasing tools that continue to give people an on ramp into a complex field.
Jeremy is also relatively high profile, in an "if you know you know" kind of way.
This really seems like a bit of an attempt for the confrence to do something slightly edgy and controversial to boost their own profile.
Edit: i should have said "enabling a whole community to build and release tools for free". Obviously a LOT of people are contributing to fastai so i dont want to take anything away from the community. Jeremy is clearly instrumental to that movement.

So you can objectively track when your “bouncing” in and out of ketosis, like say for instance the way your heart beat changes ?
urine test strips only measure acetoacetate. Urinary ketones often correlate poorly with serum levels because of variability in excretion of ketones by the kidney, influence of hydration status, and renal function. (Wikipedia - I’m being a bit lazy).
I’m not arguing against fasting, or low carb diets. I’m making the point that ketosis isn’t as easy to “bounce” into as people think (though it doesn’t mean there are not benefits from fasting or low carb diets).
The word “ketosis” gets thrown around a lot. It’s a physiological state that’s objectively quite hard to enter. I would ask, are you quantifying if you are “in ketosis” or not at any point during your fast, and if so how? Or is this just a gut feeling?
Why are people so quick to assume the motivations of others for a basic comment?
Posting form this position - Psychopharmacology and neuroscience research to post graduate level. I'm not keen to see a genetic explanation, i'm keen to see the results of research into this area because then we can discuss the extent biology plays a role in relation to socio-economical factors.
There is some research suggesting opiate addicts could be compensating for a dysregualted endogenous opiate system through substance abuse. There is similar work for dopamine with smoking. Looking at things this way could change the way interventions are offered and also potentially reduce stigma for some of those who have addictions.
Some interesting links that have likely already been shared on HN for both socio-economical and biological theories:
My hair is super thick and medium length and totally non greasy or oily, i'm not the phenotype (thickness) is linked to how greasy it gets. I will be honest i havent looked into this, i suspect its to do with lifestyle and behaviour.
