Mostly to make a point; more people are likely to care about it not being okay if it's phrased that way. (Something, something, toxic masculinity, "suck it up tough guy, can't handle a little pat-down?")

The fact that the TSA agent a woman doesn't automatically make someone else comfortable with whatever liberties the agent feels like taking. It's still likely worse if it's a man doing it, but sharing a gender isn't an excuse for the agent to do whatever they want.

Not shocking they seem to have pretty low professional standards. I recently had a friend travelling from the US back to Canada get suddenly thoroughly frisked without warning after the scanners showed some object near her thighs. She didn't have anything but clothes on her body on below the waist. The TSA agent spent time groping around, convinced there was something, then after there couldn't possibly have been an object under her clothes, accepted that (paraphrasing) "there must have been an issue with the scanner".

She called her partner (who I was with at the time) afterwards, upset and shaken by the experience. @TSA in one of the NYC airports: If you're not going to get consent to grope girls, at least let them know that you're about to do it.

I was chatting with an old classmate at a homecoming a few months ago, and he mentioned that, during the polygraph top get Canadian Top Secret clearance for a co-op job, he had to say how many drinks he had each week. Being a university student, it got brushed aside, but the answer was considered to be alcoholism-level.

Interesting, but I am very sceptical. I'd be interested in seeing actual verified results of how it handles a road with heavy snow, where the only lane references are the wheel tracks of other vehicles, and you can't tell where the road ends and the snow-filled ditch begins.

The issue is that it's no longer actually RISC-V M at the point, you're changing the instruction set. If you're compiling RISC-V M code, that doesn't need the extra NOP.

That being said, the disabling of MUL is being done at a software project level here, not by the CPU vendor. It's in the same linked commit that added in the NOP instructions to the arithmetic routines.

Why would that be any better of a defense than "that preschooler said that I should do it"? People are responsible for their work.

I use mine at Costco for purchases over $300 (limit for tap). At least here in Canada, they only accept Mastercard, not Visa, and I don't remember the PIN for my Mastercard.

I personally don't need a bunch of screens of widgets. I've got my first screen of the 17 apps I use the most, a clock/weather widget, and the app drawer button to bring up the (iconized) app list. On the second screen a have a widget for an app used to share pictures with friends.

Launchers are personal, so Niagara works for you that's great! But for my use having everything is a single column is a nightmare.

I don't love that Carney is relatively conservative-leaning for being Liberal, but I do really appreciate the fact that he's professional, competent, and stable. He speaks like (what I see as) a regular person and he's not there to whip supporters into fervent chanting.

I'm absolutely relieved that Poilievre didn't win the election (or his original seat). Setting aside just how far to the right he is, I've heard him described as an idiot both by another MP and by someone (who is himself pretty conservative) who met him at some social event.

The Z180 has however had its PLCC packages discontinued. Personally, I find SMD CPUs to not be appealing for these sorts of projects, even if the Z180 is a great chip.

Good. Maybe the companies training the LLMs should have created their own training data instead of mass-ingesting the contents of the Internet. (Though I doubt this sort of training instruction will actually be effective enough to be fun.)

Plus, if you're submitting code as yours, that code is your responsibility. "But the LLM generated bad code" isn't an excuse.

I finished my Master's a couple years ago, and in our IC probing lab, it was almost all GPIB. All of the pieces of test equipment, except for a single cutting-edge Keysight scope (which used Ethernet instead), were connected together via those chunky but satisfying and robust cables, usually controlled via MATLAB or some other IC measurement software package.

0.4 mg is an extremely low amount. The as far as I understand (and have seen) the limit of THC in Ontario is 10 mg/container for gummies. Some companies will get around that limit by packaging multiple 10 mg THC bags together.

While it's annoying and definitely creates more waste than is needed, 10 mg is a relatively reasonable limit. Most people aren't going to consume more than 10 mg THC worth of gummies in one sitting (at least if they're getting something government-sactioned).

Even with almost all of my work done on a computer, with Python, MATLAB, etc. available in a few keypresses, I still keep a calculator on hand. I haven't come across a desktop calculator (including direct 1:1 software recreations of classic calculators) that's quite as user-friendly and efficient as grabbing a scientific calculator off my desk and typing in there.

There are just some user interface advantages for me in having a physical calculator. The only thing stopping me from buying this is the price tag.

It can be valid without being peer-reviewed, but it isn't automatically reliable. Regardless of whether it has been tested, it could be fundamentally invalid. I don't know that it is, I don't know enough about the field to understand what's being said, my point is that the standards to have a pre-print aren't high. They're meant to keep out garbage, not to make sure that something is reasonable.

It's important to note this is not a peer-reviewed publication, this is just some document that has been shared. While the author has a doctorate in theoretical physics, and has extensive experience in that field, their Wikipedia article also has the following line:

Hossenfelder's more recent content has received criticism for her attacks on academic research[13][14] and for conspiracy theory-style portrayals of the physics community.

(The author recently had their affiliation end with the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, and is not happy about it.)

I don't know remotely enough to comment on the author's statements or research, or on the contents of this document, but I would advise caution on getting too excited over significant developments that haven't yet been peer reviewed.

This new product could be neat, but it just doesn't have even the slightest appeal that an MCU-based Arduino does to me. I would also have concerns about the enshittification of Arduino in general.
