Ask HN: Show HN vs. Product Hunt

I feel like this new ShowHN feature is to try to get people back to posting products on Hacker News as opposed to posting on Product Hunt. What is everyone's thoughts.

Product Hunt is apples-and-oranges compared a front-page HN article. I'm surprised that people keep drawing comparisons between the two.

It's being compared to "Show HN" which certainly isn't the same as the front page.

Product Hunt is mainly focused on actual products, some of them pretty mature, while Show HN has also been about small pet projects / weekend projects / experiments.

I like them both, but as a developer I'm actually more curious about the experimental side of Show HN projects.

I totally see your point, was my first thought as well, but Product Hunt hasn't really got me away from HN, it's more of a side dish.

A Show HN feature is something people have been asking us for for years, and was always at the top of our list (or near it: mobile-friendly markup is the other big contender). The reason it's coming out now is that the new Hacker News team is getting up to speed now.

To echo dang, we (Product Hunt) certainly can't take any credit for "inspiring" Show HN. It's existed for years.

People haven't stopped posting products to HN because of Product Hunt but I believe this will encourage more of it and may draw more attention to product launches on the site.

Most people post on both Hacker News and Product Hunt anyway, and they probably still will.

My thought is: awesome, the new, clearer guidelines make Show HN friendlier and more accessible!

Show HN has been around for a while, just never had its own tab.
